We like get ahead of the cold weather and start preparing now so when those cold days arrive, we aren’t rushing to get our coop winter-proofed. Part 1: Chicken Enrichment Shorter days mean colder days and predators. The majority of our losses have been on those winter type days. So they spend a lot of time in their coop/run staying warm, out of drafts and away from predators. This is something you can start NOW so when those cold days come they are accustomed to their treat dispensers. The Eagle is NOW OPEN 🦅 5200 District Park Dr Mason OH in the @thedistrictatdeerfield We ventured here on opening night and I can confidently say everything we ordered was a solid 10/10. How we knew some of them had worms 🐛 -LOTS of dirty butts -misshapen eggs/dirty eggs -bald backs and the feathers weren’t growing back -we saw actual worms 🤢 🪱 we treated our whole flock and within a week post treatment we noticed pin feathers starting to grow! I felt horrible we neglected it so long. Backstory: every year on October 1st, we “Boo” the girls. It’s something that we’ve been doing every year for a little over five years. Someone always brings them a basket while they’re gone and usually it’s a “ghost” who “boos” them. this year was a little different. We decided to create our own little version of a haunted trail at their house. HAPPY NATIONAL PUMPKIN SPICE DAY 🎃 Make your own FLOCK BLOCK 🐓 (and if I’m being honest, my chickens won’t touch store-bought blocks) It’s so simple and easy most times I’ll double batch and make two at a time. Make sure you save this video so you can keep making them and have the recipe saved for future use! Recipe ⬇️ 2 cups layer feed (we use @kalmbach_feeds Henhouse Reserve) 2 cups @lovemygirlstreats Pumpkin & Worms *THE KEY PUMPKIN INGREDIENT* 1/4c whole wheat flour(my sister mills our flour) 1/2 cup molasses (ours is from @azurestandard) 4 eggs with shells(I used our chicken eggs) Any herbs of choice -I used dried marigolds & lavender from our garden *you can be creative with the ingredients used* Mix well and press into a loaf pan. Make sure you press firmly and form it into the pan. Don’t forget to make a hole to hang it up! 325° 30-35 minutes (I find that it holds better at 35 minutes) LET IT COOL COMPLETELY and then allow your chickens to enjoy! #chickensofinstagram #chickencoop #chicken taken in Oxford, Ohio by @lifeofhighley

✨Disclaimer: we know everyone has their own way to own/treat bees- this is just the way we do it and why! How we treat: ⬇️ 🪳Varroa Destructor Mites: dangerous parasites 🦠 that destroy honey bee colonies by feeding on bees. Without intervention, Varroa will almost certainly DESTROY any colony it infects. No matter how careful a beekeeper is, their hives will eventually be affected. Even if we don’t see these little creatures on our bees we still take them seriously so our bee colonies are healthy. Treatment: oxalic acid, a naturally occurring organic compound that the mites cannot tolerate. For this treatment cycle we are using Varroxsan strips, which are readily available from most major beekeeping suppliers. We purchased ours from @hillcobees 🐝 (linked in this video) The slow-release strips hang in the brood chamber and as the bees go about their business for 6-7 weeks the acid is released, spreads and kills most, if not all, varroa mites. 🐝 We treat every hive in the fall to give them a good chance to grow strong and survive winter. It costs $10-$15 to treat each hive, which is a small price to pay compared to the potential loss of an entire hive. Varroxsan is a single-application treatment that only requires removal of the strips at the end of the treatment cycle. We treated all of our hives in less than an hour, which also included a brief inspection of each hive. IMPORTANT TO NOTE ❗️❗️❗️❗️ While we don’t treat a hive producing honey for human consumption, Oxalic Acid is honey-safe. 👏🏻 (there are some treatments that are not honey-safe) 🐝wear PPE when handling the product 👉🏻make sure you read the label and follow the manufacturer dosing instructions to keep yourself and the bees safe during treatment! -important to note- We DID NOT harvest honey from every hive every month. We have multiple hives on our property and we harvested from different hives each month when they had an overflow of resources. We only take from the bees when they have enough for themselves first. However, you might stroll through the grocery and wonder why “local” honey is consistently the same color. They do that for a reason. There’s nothing wrong with it but if you can buy local heres one reason why you should. You get to choose the harvest you want to try and none of our honey is mixed together. It is raw, unfiltered honey AND each harvest has a different flavor profile. It all depends on what the bees are on that season.
