If you turned off the light in a room full of mirrors, would you see yourself?

This issue reflects on how light shapes clarity, why mirrors depend on their surroundings, and how design reveals what already exists rather than adding more.

The Light Design Edit Vol. 03 invites a slower, more intentional way of seeing space and self.

Now live. Link in bio.

Some days in Lagos are about moving fast.
Other days are about finding places that let you slow down.

This is one of mine.

A space that sits between home and work —
where conversations happen easily,
coffee lasts a little longer,
and you don’t feel rushed to leave.

This issue of Light Design Edit explores third spaces like this —
places shaped by presence, not performance.
By invitation, not obligation.

The @happyspaces.ldf project reminded us that impact doesn’t always need scale to be meaningful.

Sometimes it starts with presence, care, and designing with people rather than for them.

Built texture is a language. Grooves, grout lines, glaze, and tool marks tell us how a surface was made — and how it’s meant to be used.

Tile glazes shape texture not just through colour, but through sheen and finish. A crackled glaze can suggest age and history, even when the surface is newly made.

Across time, architectural texture has been both functional and expressive — from ancient mosaics and carved stone to corrugated metal roofs. Each material and technique reflects climate, available resources, and local craft traditions.

Did you know there’s a natural fabric older than cotton? Meet Ramie. Ramie is a natural, textured, and timeless fabric that brings a refined and organic touch to interior spaces. Its linen-like weave and breathable quality make it ideal for use in curtains and drapery, cushion covers, and wall textiles. It works especially well in minimal and Japandi-inspired interiors, where simplicity, balance, and natural materials are essential. The soft texture and subtle sheen of ramie add warmth and visual depth while still keeping the overall look light, airy, and effortlessly elegant.

This cooperative in Kumasi trains young Asante carvers in traditional craft.
Every carved texture funds schooling, supports elders, and keeps cultural knowledge alive.
Their impact system is simple: carve with purpose, earn with dignity, preserve with love.”

I came across this bronze piece by Jack Eagan @jack_eagan_sculpture while scrolling the other day, and it caught my attention immediately. The surface has a quiet depth to it. Subtle shifts in color, uneven texture, and signs of age you can almost feel.

Patina is not about wear. It is about life showing up on a material over time. Small changes, softened tones, and the way a surface settles into itself are what give it character.

Eagan’s bronze shows this beautifully. Nothing is hidden or polished away. The material is allowed to age honestly, and that is what makes it beautiful.

A reminder that age is not the enemy of beauty. It may be the source of it.

A small gallery with a big memory.
In Braamfischerville, Soweto tells its own story —
not through borrowed lenses, but with dignity, courage, and light.

This is what happens when a community is given space to see itself.

My location today is Mandebele Photo Gallery, a community gallery, a resource centre and a project space located within the community of Bram Fischerville in Soweto.

Design has shown me this: even the quietest corner can reveal what really supports our wellbeing.

I keep coming back to this little space: soft linen, warm clay, gentle light.
Simple things, but together they create calm.

A reminder that texture isn’t just something we see, it’s something we feel.

What textures have been bringing you comfort lately?

Stepping into Light Design Factory as Editor-in-Chief has given me a front-row seat to the ideas shaping our future.

And today, I’m honored to introduce The Light Design Edit our weekly newsletter exploring design, culture, and the emotional stories behind the spaces we create.

The Light Design Edit is a quiet place for reflection where design meets meaning, and where we slow down long enough to notice the joy inside the everyday.

Each week, I’ll bring you closer to the visionaries behind our work, the conversations inspiring us, and the thoughtful ideas reshaping how we live.

I’m grateful for the team beside me, and excited for what we’re building together.
This is just the beginning.

Our first edition is now live.

Ever walked into a space and instantly felt inspired?

That’s not magic, it’s design at work.

The way your workspace looks and feels does more than please the eye, it shapes how you think, create, and thrive.

Every color, every light, every layout choice influences the energy you bring to your work.

Natural light fuels focus.

Color sparks creativity.

And smart layouts free your mind to think and collaborate more easily.
