I passed my thesis defense today, officially marking the end of my LLM degree, exactly a year to the day that I started classes. We love a full circle moment 🥹✨

It has been so thrilling and gratifying to combine dance music and law, two areas which I love and which both stimulate my brain in such vastly different but equally important ways. I spent the majority of my LLB degree feeling like I had to choose between my creative passions or my legal aspirations, so to combine them both in this Masters was incredibly fulfilling. I hope I did justice to the dance music community; this research is just the very tip of the iceberg and maybe one day I’ll take it further to PhD level - one day very very far in the future haha 🤓

So I guess I have a Masters degree now! Feels so surreal to say. Very proud of myself and very very thankful to have had the opportunity to study at @tilburguniversity, and for all I’ve learnt during this last year 👩🏽‍🎓💙📚 taken in Tilburg University by @lightbeams_

Last week at @radioradio.fm ✨ That was fun! Thank you @_____slimfit for having me as a guest ❤️‍🔥 Explored some varied soundscapes, played some artists I love - tagged in the slides, go check them out! - and finished with @tyla of COURSE (@wearechamos edit, so good). Hello 🐬 April show for @operator.radio is up on my SoundCloud (yes I know it’s June tomorrow - time isn’t real!) ~ Anyways please find the track list on the last slide. My favourite show I’ve recorded so far, and one of the Staff Picks which was a nice surprise. How sublime are the vocals on the Hiatus Kaiyote track on slide 4?? Absolutely can’t wait for their album next month 🥹

Tune in to Operator next Tuesday 4 June at 14:00 for more beautiful, soulful tunes interspersed with me yapping about all the music that makes my days so much better 🩵 Find the archived shows in link in bio xo taken in Rotterdam, Netherlands by @lightbeams_

Beautiful weekend celebrating my crown birthday with the real jewels of my life: my friends and my parents and my kitty. And all the more sweet that it was also my best friend @auntie_baby__’s 30th birthday celebrations that same weekend! Girlies are growinnggg 🆙🥹

So very grateful for all the love in my life, for all the thoughtful messages (slow on replies as always, seen them and I love you) and for this silly little life that I wouldn’t trade with anyone else 🫶🏽 by @lightbeams_

My set from @vaultcapetown last month is now up on SoundCloud 🖤🪩

Bit of a “darker vibe” for this one, as a friend described it afterwards. I’ve been processing a lot of personal changes and life ups and downs this year which for sure influenced how I played during this set. Still some dancefloor heaters in there nonetheless, we gotta dance it out while we feel our feelings!

Dilly-dallied about posting this bc I was quite hard on myself during and afterwards (as always lol, perfectionism). But I’m glad to have it up now, hope you enjoy! I’m always so touched by and grateful for the warm feedback from dancers and listeners, even when I sometimes feel like I only hear my “mistakes”. Thank you @vaultcapetown for having me again and @jed_di for the trusssttt 🫂

Featuring music from @coffintexts, Beatrice M, @jurango.dj, @identified_patient, @carre__carre, @ccl_url and @ciel_dj and so many more wildly talented artists.

Link n b! I will see you back on the dancefloor •soon• 👾

Sound Guide Selectors 🖤💿

This week, we’ve invited @lightbeams_ as our latest Selector Series curator.

Her deeply rooted curiosity for music has continued to shape her eclectic approach to selection, with sets that move between the familiar and the unexpected.

Alongside her work behind the decks, she recently completed her LLM, with a thesis exploring the intersections of music, art, culture, and human rights. For her, academia and music aren’t separate pursuits. Research and critical thought sits alongside listening, feeling, and experience, with each informing the other.

In her words : “These are tracks are forever favourites of mine. My selections highlight what I’ve been playing out loads this year; including staples from my collection and some newer finds that I’ve been rinsing. And, of course, it wouldn’t be complete without deeper, dubby bits and some shimmering vocal moments scattered in there <3 “

Tracklist :

Isaac Carter, Callum Asa - Feel Me (Twisted Dub)
Octo Octa - Find Your Way Home
Forest Drive West - Dualism
Kelela & PinkPantheress - the bridge
not even noticed - Eteus (K-Lone Remix)
Olof Dreijer - Echoed Dafnino (feat. MaMan)
james K - Play (Objekt Remix) by @lightbeams_

VAULT returns to @modular_cape_town for another exploration of the underground, occupying two rooms with a carefully considered programme of cerebral techno and boundary-pushing club music. Built around long-form narratives rather than purely peak-time moments, the night brings together artists shaping dancefloors through depth, tension and discovery.
