The whole idea behind this business was sparked by @markseliger's Oscar's party portraits for @vanityfair. For ten years, I saw Mark take effortlessly chic photos of the coolest people on earth, in a lovely, ever-changing set of his own design, and it made me want to bring a bit of that magic to events with @theabsolutebestthing. I was lucky enough to hear Mark speak at @filmforeverweekend earlier this year, and took the chance to make a portrait of him on my large format camera. I'm grateful for his time and wisdom, and most of all, his inspirational work.

I had known of @frankthorpv as the madman photojournalist who brought large format film cameras into the US Capitol (including an 11x14 pinhole camera), but I had the chance to hear him talk about his work at @filmforeverweekend a few months ago, and I found him to be deeply introspective, and maybe more importantly, able to bring out the introspection from his subjects. His project "After the Riot" is filled with contemplative portraits of Americans that lived through the insurrection, and I was bloody impressed. I bought his book and also took his portrait.

My mom, near the front door of my parents' house, wearing a flower crown I made of all native Australian flora (Eucalyptus, protea) plus rambutan (to represent Vietnam).

There's also a little bug, flying next to the protea blossom, which is nice.

My dad in the garden, wearing a crown of eucalyptus, kangaroo paw, orange aloe flower, and birdseye chili. I made the flower crown incorporating all native Australian flora, plus the birdseye to represent Vietnam. It was a real delight to shop for the crown at the Sydney Markets and weave all the bits together with needle and wire.

Got to chat with Brandon & Brian Wright, the founders of @cinestillfilm a few weeks back at @filmforeverweekend. We discussed how awesome Cinestill 400D looks on large format, among other things - ironic that I had Portra 400 loaded in my camera when I took this shot.

Some large format film portraits of friends from the last few weeks in New York. Always grateful to those who say yes to me! For the interested - Kershaw patent reflex, Zeiss Tessar 165/2.7, and a mix of Provia 100 and Opticolour 200 in 4x5.

Bonus - the last portrait of me was taken by @bryanweberphotography , who casually picked up my frankenstein camera for the first time and nailed it in one. by @lightcomesthrough

My artwork "Behold, The Man" featuring @mickdouch just won top honors at the 39th Annual Northern National Arts Competition. It comes with a fancy blue ribbon... and a $1000 prize!

"Behold, The Man" is a mixed-media 1 of 1 artwork, photographed on large format film, developed, scanned, printed on cotton rag paper, gilded with real gold, varnished and framed. It is a modern update of the 1494 masterpiece "Ecce Homo" by Jean Hey, featuring a transgender man and representing the struggle of trans people in America against forces that would use religion as a cudgel to obliterate them. It is part of a diptych, the other being "Behold, The Woman," which features a trans woman.

The second slide is the Jean Hey painting, and the third slide is "Behold, The Man" in situ at the Gallery at Nicolet College. taken in Nicolet College by @lightcomesthrough

The Path I, part of a diptych.

On a phone it's hard to tell, but ask yourself - where is @anri.vrt in this photo and what is she doing?

In my 40s, I find myself collapsing the waveforms of so many things I've been told over the years into simpler, grander truths. With these revelations, I've begun to question things that I took for granted, and realize that I can put these questions down in images I create. This photo, and its companion piece I posted yesterday, comprise one of those questions. taken in The Wilderness by @lightcomesthrough

The Path II, part of a diptych, and part of the "My Generation" series of artwork. The most extreme shoot I've ever done.

I've been exploring a lot of Christian symbolism lately in my artwork, not because I'm a Christian or ex-Christian myself, but rather because I'm using Christianity as a stand-in for maybe... organized religion in general. I would not be able to make these artworks with, say, a star of David, or a crescent, without immediately drawing specific interpretations I don't want. Regardless, my feelings about this work are surprisingly complex, and I am curious to see how it will be interpreted. taken in The Wilderness by @lightcomesthrough
