The whole idea behind this business was sparked by @markseliger's Oscar's party portraits for @vanityfair. For ten years, I saw Mark take effortlessly chic photos of the coolest people on earth, in a lovely, ever-changing set of his own design, and it made me want to bring a bit of that magic to events with @theabsolutebestthing. I was lucky enough to hear Mark speak at @filmforeverweekend earlier this year, and took the chance to make a portrait of him on my large format camera. I'm grateful for his time and wisdom, and most of all, his inspirational work.

Thanks again to @miraparkphotography for the encouragement and assist.

Some large format film portraits of friends from the last few weeks in New York. Always grateful to those who say yes to me! For the interested - Kershaw patent reflex, Zeiss Tessar 165/2.7, and a mix of Provia 100 and Opticolour 200 in 4x5.

Bonus - the last portrait of me was taken by @bryanweberphotography , who casually picked up my frankenstein camera for the first time and nailed it in one.

"Fear and Solarization in New York"
.
I have two favorite kinds of instant film projects: ones where I hand the photos out to folks, and ones where I get to assemble composite images like this. I was fortunate enough to do both at PolaCon NYC this year. This was very much a spur of the moment idea that I just ran with, and I'm so glad that I did. I smell the start of a series here....

I had spent Day 1 of PolaCon NYC 2026 wandering around with my RB67, rigged with an RGB LED flashlight pointing at the lens, asking folks what their favorite color was, and snapping a portrait of them awash in that color. (Or at least as close to it as I could get.)
.
It was fun, but that rig wasn't about simple colors, and I hadn't given a presentation on #Solarization of Instax film that morning to not put it into practice. So I swapped the flashlight for my red laser and adjusted it so I could see the beam but not the laser body. It wasn't as impressive as I had hoped, only peaking into the upper left corner, but I decided to have some fun with it anyways.
.
I started snagging folks I knew, asked them if they wanted to be silly for a minute, pointed to a spot on the wall, and told them to act terrified of it.
.
The rest was history.

PolaCon photos incoming!
.
Polaroid was kind enough to let attendees borrow a new Gen3 Polaroid Go for an hour (along with two packs of film!) to try them out. It's such a fun little camera! Exposure was usually spot on, and its lens seems like it's optimized for portraits and selfies. It includes some flash controls and double exposure options, but I didn't play with those.

An insanely awesome weekend which started with speaking at the @filmforeverweekend in NYC. I cannot thank @birgitbuchart and the folks at @robertsdistributors & @ilfordphoto enough for the invite, and for giving me the opportunity to meet (in person) so many of the film photographers and industry leaders I’ve been following (on instagram) over the years.

Then a birthday celebration with @hallie_gram and Monroe which included an absolutely incredible visit to Sarah’s @oliphantstudio, a trip to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and an ice cream cake enjoyed with friends on a table in the middle of a side-street in Chinatown. Oh, and then back to DC to watch a Nats win with @nbcnews colleagues!

Feeling very lucky marking this trip around the sun, and very much looking forward to the next one.

📷 of me speaking are thanks to @birgitbuchart, most of the pictures with folks after that are courtesy or the incomparable @noahfrickalofs.
