🎙️ A climate film podcast and newsletter discussing movies and TV through a climate lens by @theoriginaljake & @tolmeia 🌎🍿 Now on Substack! 🔗👇

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

🍿💌 Introducing the Lights, Climate, Action Substack!

That’s right, your favourite podcast that looks at films and TV through a climate lens is making the switch from audio to the written word.

Why, you may ask? As well as birthing a newsletter, we’ve also recently birthed a baby. With a little (a lot) less time on our hands and some logistical challenges of trying to record decent audio with some adorable yet very loud baby babbles in the background, we decided that in order to keep our love for climate cinema alive, we would need to find a new way to share our (often quite controversial) opinions with you all.

So, if you’ve missed the fun of the pod, head to the link in our bio to subscribe! The first review is a fun one 👀🪏🤠

🍿🌍🎙️ SURPRISE! We’ve made a podcast! We, being, @tolmeia and @theoriginaljake. Lights, Climate, Action is our new climate film podcast where we discuss movies and TV through a climate lens @lightsclimateaction 🎬

We had this idea over 2 years ago and are finally making our little passion project happen! In each episode, we’re taking a look at a film or a TV series to discuss what it does and doesn’t get right on climate change, from fossil fuel propaganda and environmental disasters to cartoons and comedy.

An intro as well as our first episode, discussing @mr.ghostpanther’s Don’t Look Up, are now available on all your favourite podcast platforms (Spotify, Apple etc) and we hope you enjoy listening! 🔗 Links in the bio.

🔥 We think this podcast is launching at the perfect moment! Now, more than ever, we need the media we consume to show us the way - whether that’s helping us to imagine a better future or helping us to wake up and take action.

A little about us…
🎞️ @theoriginaljake is a cinephile with a film degree, a love for all things @a24, and the odd musical. He works in comms and video production in the climate change and human rights sector.

🎨 @tolmeia is an artist who loves a tearjerker or a rom-com. She currently works as an artist and climate campaigner focused on fossil fuel advertising. (You may remember @idealisticallypod!)

📷 Thank you to @the.roses.theatre for letting us use your theatre for our photos - we love supporting independent creative spaces, especially in towns that are already facing climate impacts such as flooding.

Our wonderful music is by @stowe__ 🎶

Please bear with us as we get to grips with all the technical podcast stuff - our set-up is a little more than imperfect for perfect recording but we hope it’s still enjoyable 🎧 by @lightsclimateaction

Television and film has become very good at imagining the end of the world. 🌍

From burning forests to flooded cities, we know what catastrophe looks like. But what if the most radical thing Hollywood could put on screen right now wasn’t another apocalypse, but a future worth fighting for?

It’s time for Hollywood to finally embrace hope and give us a future that is worth fighting for.

On paper, Digger is the perfect film for Lights Climate Action. 🪏🪏🪏

🎬 Big-budget studio picture, climate at the heart of the story, an Oscar-winning director, and “the last movie star” himself, Tom Cruise.

🔥 My hot take: it’s messier than an oil spill.

Have you seen the reviews for this movie? 🎄🎁

We were blown away by how many people missed the sustainable themes in this Christmas rom-com, despite the dialogue being straight out of an environmentalist's handbook.

Check our bio for the full episode.

Is this movie another festive cringe-fest or a rom-com with a deeper message? What are reviewers saying? And… what has Harry Potter got to do with anything?

🙅‍♀️ sorry but THIS is the propaganda we’re not falling for 🙅‍♀️

The shocking twist in Disney’s Strange World which we discussed in our Season 1 finale - a solarpunk world with flying cars still uses gas stoves?!

Hear what we had to say about it alongside @jacobsimonsays at the link in bio 🔗
