I used to do this…🤷‍♀️There are many reasons it’s a bad idea, but here are 3 big ones: 1️⃣ A logo is just one piece of your branding. And a successful brand is consistent: color use, fonts, image styles and more are a part of your marketing. 2️⃣ I don’t want my clients brands to look DIY. Consumers are savvy, and they will quickly overlook unprofessional or confusing products or services and opt for ones that instill a sense of professionalism and trust, and feel legit. 3️⃣ My goal is to remove the obstacle of not having professionally designed branding for small businesses, so my clients can focus on building their business (and feel extra proud of what they are offering to the world!). Start with a theme that fits the brand. For Unmapped, flannel already feels outdoorsy, approachable and very Minnesota. “Flannel Roots” gave it a little more meaning and made it feel like their event, not just another fall party. Make it easy to participate. Everyone owns a flannel. You don’t need a costume or a complicated theme to feel like you’re part of it. Then carry the idea through. Branded flannel merch, cozy fall vibes, beer, dogs, gathering outside. All the little details reinforced the same feeling without everything needing to be plastered with a logo. And maybe most importantly, give people something they’ll remember beyond the graphics. A good event brand creates a little world people get to step into for a few hours. That’s the fun part for me. I stumbled onto this place before I ever had a dog. I had no idea then how much it would eventually mean to me. 🐕🌿 The story behind this year’s Posters for Parks piece is in the reel, but the artwork itself was a labor of love too. I combined real watercolor with digital painting to create the final illustration, which is printed as a fine-art giclée print on beautiful, archival-quality paper. It’ll be hanging alongside a whole collection of artist-designed posters celebrating Minneapolis parks at Posters for Parks on October 10 at the Minnehaha Falls Park Pavilion. This show is always such a good time, and an even better excuse to celebrate the parks, trails and green spaces that make Minneapolis so special. A little more hand-drawn brand love. 🌿 This one was inspired by nature, old woodblock prints, and things that feel elemental, imperfect and made by hand. But one of my favorite things about this project? My client is a designer, too. She absolutely could have designed her own brand. But sometimes being too close to your own thing makes it harder to see it clearly. She trusted me to take the ideas, references and feeling in her head and run with them. And that trust is IT. When there’s room to explore, you can make something that isn’t pulled from a template or built around a trend. It can become its own thing. Completely custom + a little unexpected. It happens one “safe” choice at a time: You copy what’s already working. You build a mood board full of your competitors. You follow trends that are already everywhere. You ask 5 people for feedback and combine all 5 opinions. You keep sanding down the edgy parts until nothing feels risky. You don’t need to be different just to be different. You need to get super clear on who you are. Find a designer you trust. Bring them in early. Let them ask hard questions.
