For our second article of the year, we sat down with Sarah Sukumaran (@sarahsuku ), founder of @lilith.nyc

Born and raised in Elmhust, Queens, New York, Sukumaran grew up loving sneakers through the immersive culture that was 90’s NBA basketball. The 90’s was especially a historic time for sneakers, but Sukumaran ran into issues. Where were the women’s colorways? She struggled to find colorways that she wanted to wear or better, were made by women, for women. This would be the start of the ideation of Lilith NYC.

Sukumaran’s background is originally in tech, so Lilith’s original ideation began back in 2015, but as an online women’s shopping website aiming to assist women in finding what they wanted to wear. From there, Sukumaran would land an analytics job at Nike, where she recognized more issues with access to women’s footwear outside of colorways, such as size, storytelling and purchasing accessibility. That, mixed with a slew of ideas led to Lilith’s official launch in November of 2021

“We needed more stories catered towards women, by women.”

Wanting the brand to be a reflection of Queens and its global diversity was a focal point for Sukumaran. Drawing inspiration from her ancestral roots in Nainativu (the island of serpents), as well as the surrounding community. By doing so, Lilith has grown to be a brand of quality while taking queues from performance.

Lilith boasts their Caudal Lure silhouette in four colorways, each one hinting at aspects of Sukumaran’s life in some way. For example, the Amberlou colorway was inspired by the amber colored bricks used by architect Louis Allmendinger for homes throughout various neighborhoods in Queens. You can learn more about @lilith.nyc on their page and their website and if you’re in NY, Sarah will be in conversation with @brooklynshoespace at F.I.T in the coming weeks (check Brooklyn Shoe Space for more info)

Special thank you to Sarah Sukumaran for the time and conversation. taken in Elmhurst, Queens by @arrambam__

🌸🌺 The Art of the Altar 💐🌼

i started documenting altars & shrines on my different visits to nainativu, jaffna, and the other theevus including the makeshift altars on boats (which i’ll share another day). mainly curious about what/who folks like to keep on their altars but also for my own color studies and inspo! 💜💛🧡🩷

1. Lilith altar shrine complete with gorgeous, fresh flower garlands, thanks to @taragermani / @nangiville 💐🧚🏽
2. our at-home altar in queens, complete with fake tropical palms, fresh marigolds from the garden, candles, & a holographic dying jesus overlooking two clowns🌴🌼
3. a small corner of our at-home altar in nainativu as of 2023, with nagapooshani amman & st. anthony 🐍
4. when i visited nainativu for first time in 2011, this was what was left of the swami room after being abandoned for 27 years—a beautiful handpainted lakshmi on glass & a sacred heart jesus 🪷🫀

Today, I turn 38 (🥳🧁), and I’m reflecting on the journey that’s shaped me—growing up with the weight of displacement and genocide, generational trauma, and the lack of a Tamil diaspora community.⁣
⁣
I’ve spent much of my life identifying first and foremost, as a kid from Queens (𝘐 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘥𝘰, 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺). It wasn’t until I was a teenager, in a post 9/11 context, where I began to to explore what it meant to be Eelam Tamil. Terms like Desi and South Asian always felt homogeneous, often referring to North Indian culture and tropes. I also found the terms incredibly reductive, erasing those of us from marginalized and non-dominant backgrounds. ⁣
⁣
Perhaps a small act of resistance, but I now quickly call out and correct folks to ensure they refer to me as Tamil or Eelam Tamil. But as of late, the largest act of resistance, has been building and storytelling about identity through my brand @lilith.nyc.

Whether it’s spending more time on my island home, choosing colorways inspired by the theevus or just sharing photos from the homeland, it’s been a privilege to explore and share my Tamil identity through creative pursuits. 🌊🐚🪸
