What perspectives do Vienna’s museum directors share on “NAVIGATING ANGST”?

Under this year’s theme “NAVIGATING ANGST”, VIENNA ART WEEK explores how art can help us confront the fears and complexities of our present.

We invited the directors of our member institutions to share their perspectives on the role museums can play in navigating today’s uncertainties and fostering new ways of understanding.

Today, we’re pleased to present insights from Lilli Hollein, General Director of the MAK – Museum of Applied Arts.

Thank you for the great Opening!

Thank you @mak_vienna and @lillihollein for the great collaboration and evening together.

PASSANTS PARMI LES PIERRES
curated by Thomas Demand
Exhibition: 29.05.–20.09.2026
Franz-Josefs-Kai 3, 1010 Vienna

PASSANTS PARMI LES PIERRES presents 27 works spanning photography, film, video, and sculpture by artists including Luigi Ghirri, Sibylle Bergemann, Tacita Dean, Jürgen Jürges, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Mohamed Bourouissa, Jeff Wall, and Carrie Mae Weems. Their works move between reportage and reconstruction, between the observed moment and the staged image, between historical event and its representation.
The writer Clemens J. Setz has composed a caption for each contribution, creating an independent textual layer within the exhibition space and thereby subverting the conventional relationship between artwork and commentary.

Now on view at @mak_vienna
THOMAS DEMAND. Rooms That Dream of the Past
For this exhibition, Thomas Demand fuses the visual power of theatre and opera with his artistic methods. Using historical scenographic models as inspiration he created a series of bespoke works for the MAK that transposes a selection of models from the archives of the Theatermuseum (@theatermuseumvienna) and the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco (@nmnmonaco) onto photographic media.

We at the MAK are delighted to announce the reappointment of our General Director Lilli Hollein for the next five years and warmly congratulate her! 🫶🥰

Lilli Hollein on the extension of her term: “I would like to thank Federal Minister and Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler as well as the selection committee he appointed for their trust, as expressed in this contract extension. It is a recognition of the dedicated work of the entire MAK team in further strengthening the presence of this important institution in recent years. This extension comes at a time of significantly increasing visitor numbers and growing international attention. Together with my colleague Gregor Murth, I am committed to meeting the challenges ahead with clear strategies and a highly motivated team. On a personal level, I consider this renewed appointment a great honour, and I very much look forward to the years ahead, working with the MAK team, which is as important to me as the enthusiasm of our visitors.”

Under the direction of Lilli Hollein since 2021, living up to first principles at Vienna’s Museum of Applied Arts, long an epicenter for art’s inquiries into cutting-edge design technologies, begins with knowing where the present is.

Between exhibitions by Hito Steyerl, Helmut Lang, and a re-presentation of the MAK collection conceptualized by Markus Schinwald, Hollein spoke to Klaus Speidel about contemporary art’s new interest in object history and how to honor the public’s trust.

Lili Waerndorfer (née Hellmann) donated Carl Otto Czeschka’s costume designs for Richard Wagner’s operas Tristan und Isolde and Die Walküre to the MAK as permanent loans in 1934, after the museum had declined to purchase them. In April 1938, Lili Waerndorfer fled the Nazi regime, under which many members of her family were murdered. She died in the United States in 1952.

In 2022, @kathrinpokornynagel drew the attention of Director General @lilli.hollein to the loan, which had not been addressed since then. With the valuable support of experts from the Commission for Provenance Research at the @kunstkulturministerium, extensive research made it possible to identify the rightful heirs of the works and to submit an offer to purchase them.

Tristan and Wotan are among the highlights of the newly reopened permanent collection VIENNA 1900 – Everyday Life. A Total Work of Art.

It was a great pleasure to welcome Samuel Jones, Jeffrey Warndof, and Donna Warndof, descendants of Lili Waerndorfer, together with Pia Schölnberger @piambina, Head of the Austrian Commission for Provenance Research (@kunstkulturministerium) to the opening of VIENNA 1900 at the MAK last week.

We are delighted that these costume designs could now be acquired for the MAK with the generous support of the Asenbaum family @artconsultasenbaum, Caroline Mortimer @cvm1960, and an anonymous donor—and that they are now part of the MAK collection. ❤

Re-opening „VIENNA 1900 - Everyday. A Total Work of Art“ exhibition at @mak_vienna @makartsociety

In the stunning exhibition by @markus_schinwald and director @lillihollein you will see a curated selection of Lobmeyr chandeliers

It traces a genealogy of the chandelier as furniture - from the early 20th century through the 1960s - highlighting its evolution as both a source of light and a defining element of spatial design.

On display are our @lobmeyrlighting classics like the Pagoda and Met chandelier and @lobmeyr glass ware. taken in Museum für angewandte Kunst Wien by @lillihollein
