SHOW ANNOUNCEMENT ✨ My series 2 Blocks Down has a new life and place in East Flatbush at Gil’s home. I’m thrilled to have a space and welcome the beginning of a new series in collaboration with Gil Arno. OCT 16th at 7pm / Music at 8pm Jenny Graf with Nitin Mukul (visuals), Karol Konstancia, and Gabby Fluke-Mogul Karol Konstancia (PL/US) @karolkonstancia is an electroacoustic musician who uses feedback, voice, improvisation and concrete compositional practices to create narratively dense retellings of Polish Highland folk music.

For this show, Jenny Gräf (DK/US) @jennygraf_ performs a set combining self-built electroacoustic instruments, analogue synthesizer, and vocals. Moving from the quiet shimmer of her hand-built speakers to the raw, resonant textures of her metal bow instrument and synth, the set moves through shifting terrain between noise, voice, and electroacoustic sound. This is Gräf’s first US performance in seven years. She will perform with live visuals by Nitin Mukul @nitin_mukul_studio an American visual artist of Indian descent who maps spaces where painting and video intersect as a durational experience. In 2020 Mukul co-founded Epicenter NYC, a community journalism multiplatform initiative that engages, connects and informs and empowers through the power of culture and community.

Gabby Fluke-Mogul @flukemogul is a Brooklyn-based violinist, improviser, composer, educator, organizer, and doula. Weaving within experimental threads of improvised musics, their playing has been described as “embodied, visceral and virtuosic” and “the most striking sound in improvised music in years.”

Doors 7pm Music 8pm This is a home not a venue. Light eats will be available and contributions are welcome. BYOB / contributions for the artists are welcome.

Feel free to bring a chair to sit on if you need a chair. There will be some at the space but can not guarantee a seat. by @lilyruskroda

The psychedelic effects of LSD have been well documented. But what about the psychedelic effects of electronic musical instruments?

In the early 1960s, Don Buchla made a living designing circuits that translated biological phenomena into electronic signals, building instruments for the blind and experimental sensors for NASA research into manned spaceflight. These devices didn't just report on the senses. They hinted at the possibility of changing them.

Then his friend Owsley Stanley began flooding San Francisco with hundreds of thousands of doses of LSD, and Buchla found another technology that promised to alter his senses, and his consciousness.

Join us on October 3rd at 8PM at the MMT in Harleysville, PA as musicologist @ted_gordon explores Buchla's place in the 1960s counterculture, including his relationships with Stanley and Timothy Leary, his work on the legendary 1966 Trips Festival, his involvement with the San Francisco Tape Music Center, and his interest in psychedelic technologies.

Following his lecture, Gordon will be joined by Marcia Bassett @lilyruskroda, a frequent collaborator and NYC noise legend who regularly performs with Buchla instruments and guitar, to perform an improvised duo, articulating some of the ideas developed in the talk.

Tickets are available at tickets.theMMT.org and we'll see you when you get here!

Marcia Bassett is a musician // artist based in NYC. Her work explores sound collage, improvisation, and audiovisual environments. She explores and connects uncharted realms filled with strange ideas and abstractions. She is the founder of Yew Recordings and is also known for her solo
work as Zaïmph, a project she initiated in 2005. She frequently collaborates with others, including Samara Lubelski, Chuck Bettis, Taralie Peterson, Ted Gordon, Thomas Dimuzio, and Ursula Scherrer.

Scott Helland is a Hudson Valley guitarist known as Guitarmy of One. He is the co-founder and bassist of the legendary 80s Hardcore Punk band Deep Wound with J Mascis and Lou Barlow (Dinosaur jr) and also the guitarist of the Post-Punk duo Frenchy And The Punk.

Collin Crowe is a New York-based electronic musician known for his dark, beat-driven analog synthesizer tracks. He creates punky electronic noise pop for the end times using a raw, unfiltered approach. His new album Endmusik blends minimal synth, post-punk, industrial, and Italo disco, juxtaposing human vulnerability with societal decay.

Glockabelle shreds two Casio VL-Tones, a glockenspiel with eight thimbles and likes to shout in French.

Amazing weekend in Putney VT. Wrapped up the trip stopping in to visit Jon Hendricks and pick up some goodies for the archive. A few envelopes were opened revealing collaged Beatles record covers sent by fans to the Nutopia Embassy. Can’t wait to open the rest of the envelopes sent to One White Street and sealed since Aug 14 1974! 52 years!

The Nutopian Embassy operated out of One White Street and also served as the headquarters of the National Committee for John and Yoko, established by Jon Hendricks on a volunteer basis to build public and artistic support against the Nixon administration’s politically motivated efforts to deport John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

Fun fact, Jon and I have worked together since 2013, but we soon realized we also had a Putney, VT, connection. I’ve been going to Putney every summer since the early 1970s, staying at various houses just down from Jon’s house! Jon and I have also been intersecting since the late 90s, when I was writing about Fluxus and ended up working for Barbara Moore at Bound and Unbound, where I also met Michael Bernstein @michaelrbernstein and invited him to come out and jam with Double Leopards. The air is clear and exhilarating. Let the bridges that are built be varied. Transformation is real. #nutopia #Youbetterfreeyourmind

The concept of Nutopia was announced on April 1 1973 We announce the birth of a conceptual country, NUTOPIA.
Citizenship of the country can be obtained by declaration of your awareness of NUTOPIA.
NUTOPIA has no land, no boundaries, no passports, only people.
NUTOPIA has no laws other than cosmic.
All people of NUTOPIA are ambassadors of the country.
As two ambassadors of NUTOPIA, we ask for diplomatic immunity and recognition in the United Nations of our country and its people.

October 3: talk and performance with @lilyruskroda at the @museum_of_music_technology_mmt !

This is part of their extraordinary Buchla exhibition, “Instruments that Talk Back,” which will feature 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 series systems & modules, custom EEG modules, the infamous Sili con Cello, several incredibly rare prototypes, at least 4 historical Music Easels, and contemporary instruments! Well worth the trip up from Philly or down from NYC!

Other events will feature Todd Barton, Ezra Buchla, Suzanne Ciani, Joel Davel, Ryan Gaston, Mark Goldstein, Steve Horelick, Mike Hunter, Steve McQuarry, the MEMS Project, Ami Radunskaya, Sarah Belle Reid, David Rosenboom, Stephen Ruppenthal, and Barry Schraeder—everything live-streamed as well!

(And while you’re down in Harleysville, please do yourself a favor and book a tour of the MMT, which has one of the most complete, if not *the* most complete, collection of electronic music instruments on the planet!)
