In early 2024 I took part in @a_bprojects Studio Session, Pedestal Problems, with @takming_chuang - the smell of clay was actually giving me pretty bad morning sickness at the time but that series of conversations and together-apart experimentation over Zoom really shifted things for me.

Through the discussions I started making a series of vessels with their own ceramic pedestals, combining elements made with different types of clay into self-contained, totem-like sculptures. I had just finished the elements of each piece, ready for assembly, when I had to leave the studio suddenly and they were left wrapped in plastic for about a year before I returned and excavated them.

Encountering these bone dry fragments, I decided to let the kiln take a role in joining them. I made some new vessels to complete the series, spending time carving the surfaces, adding coloured slip and drawing with underglaze pencils.

Somewhere along the way, the pedestals I had set out to complete became inverted so that I ended up with a series of strange vessels with lids - some fused on through the firing process and some balanced on top, shifting with each new arrangement.

This of course left me with a new pedestal problem - nothing was quite right on which to rest these characters until, while planning my son’s second birthday, I found a mega pack of construction blocks at Smyth’s Toys. They are the perfect playful foil to these vessels, which themselves spawned the paintings that make up this exhibition.

MULTISTOREY continues for its final weekend, open Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th 11am-3pm

A little reminder to slow down 🐌

Margaret Calvert’s 20mph (2023),takes a familiar road sign and gives it a playful twist. Made at full scale using the retroreflective material found on UK roads, its bright, unexpected colours replace the usual road-sign palette.

Calvert is best known for developing Britain’s road sign system alongside Jock Kinneir. Together, they created the Transport and Motorway typefaces, pictograms and colour system that still shape how we navigate Britain’s roads today. 20mph draws on this familiar visual language but gives it a different purpose.

The work is part of Calvert’s ‘Play’ projects, personal works made for herself rather than for a client.
While a 20mph sign usually tells drivers how fast they can go, Calvert’s version offers a gentler invitation to slow down and take your time.

Now in David Parr House as part of Moving Stories, the word is a reminder to slow down and consider the work of David Parr, who spent four decades decorating his house in his own time, alongside his professional work for F.R. Leach & Sons. For both artists, personal projects offered space to experiment beyond the demands of commissioned work.

See 20mph as part of House Guests: Moving Stories at David Parr House, open until 9 January 2027.

NEW INDUSTRY EXPERT INTERVIEW

Louise Fitzjohn, founder and director of Liminal Gallery in Margate, joins The Flux Review to discuss what it really means to build a gallery around artists, trust and long-term career development.

Drawing on her experience across the commercial gallery sector, Fitzjohn speaks openly about supporting underrepresented artists, the barriers facing working-class creatives, the importance of community, and why the relationship between artist and gallerist should be collaborative rather than prescriptive.

She also discusses Liminal Gallery’s experimental programme, Margate’s growing cultural identity, the responsibility galleries have to pay artists first, and why the success of an exhibition should never be judged by sales alone.

For artists approaching galleries, Fitzjohn also shares practical advice on finding the right representation and building relationships that can genuinely support a career.

Open today: Multistorey by @rebeccaelves

The seventh exhibition in The Maternity Series is Multistorey, a solo exhibition by British artist Rebecca Elves, where stories spill out of ceramic vessels and into strange, unfolding painted worlds. Moving between oil painting and ceramics, Elves transforms Liminal’s intimate space into an impossible interior where narrative refuses to stay contained. With strange forms, dark humour and a faded sense of longing, Multistorey captures the moment something simmering beneath the surface finally breaks free.

‘Multistorey’ continues until Sunday 11 October 2026 and is open Thursday.- Sunday 11am-4pm, or outside of those times by appointment.

For those unable to visit in person, the Online Viewing Room can be accessed via the link in our bio

I appreciate the ABSURDITY of asking anyone to do one more art thing during Frieze week.
And yet… come to Margate where I’ve curated WINGING IT, a new exhibition by Zena Blackwell at @liminal_gallery , and this one means an awful lot to me.

I’ve followed @zenablackwellartist for years. I’ve bought her work. I’ve talked about her work endlessly. She does something that I find incredibly difficult to put into words: she gets at the strange collision between motherhood and childhood. Her work somehow paints the memories we all carry, things your children unexpectedly carry back. The love and exhaustion and nostalgia and pain that can all somehow exist in the same bloody moment. And she does it with colour and humour and paintings that are just completely ALIVE.

There are new works made specifically for this tiny Margate space and they absolutely punch.

So my question is: can I actually persuade any of you to leave the Frieze circus and get on a train to Margate?

And for the parents here: has raising your children made you think differently about your own childhood? Because that, for me, is one of the most powerful things running through this show.

WINGING IT
 Zena Blackwell

 Liminal Gallery, Margate
 Saturday 17 October, 2–8pm
 Evening preview 5–8pm

I will be there. Zena will be there. Please come say hello. And bring someone who needs to know her work. taken in Liminal Gallery by @liminal_gallery

Opening Thursday: Multistorey by @rebeccaelves

Multistorey is a solo exhibition by British artist Rebecca Elves presented as part of Liminal Gallery’s Maternity Series. Using painting as a direct extension of her work in ceramics, Multistorey explores the moment stories overspill their containers.

The exhibition presents three large narrative oil paintings on suspended canvas panels, alongside more intimate paintings on panel and the lidded ceramic vessels that spawned them. In this way, Multistorey transforms the gallery into the impossible space within the vessel: a space where narrative cannot be contained.

These paintings emerged from the artist’s frustration at being unable to capture the immediacy of working in clay or wall painting on a transportable surface. She began painting directly from a series of small, lidded ceramic vessels onto long panels of unstretched canvas and found that the stories she had always sensed simmering inside the clay began to spill out through the paint. This process transformed a sense of compressed urgency into strange unfolding worlds.

Rebecca Elves’ paintings and ceramics contain a shared gestural language: intuitive forms gather, heavy with touch, arranging themselves around gaps and crevices before pooling in dense pockets of brush strokes. There is a sense of dark wit as these forms coalesce into beings – the glimpse of an eye, the fold of a cheek – before dissolving again. The faded colour palette of these paintings saturates them with a sense of longing, of a once-exuberant tea party that is perennially winding down.

As these forms trip across mediums and through Liminal’s intimate gallery space, Elves’ squirming stories break containment.

‘Multistorey’ opens on Thursday 1 October and continues until Sunday 11 October 2026. The exhibition will be open Thursday.- Sunday 11am-4pm, or outside of those times by appointment.

All are welcome to join the artist for the Private View on Saturday 3 October 5-8pm.
