My work is made in a world increasingly dominated by speed, screens and artificial intelligence.

Painting offers a different way of being in the world. It asks us to slow down, to look closely and to give something our undivided attention. In this sense, the act of painting, and the act of looking, become quiet forms of resistance.

'In Memory of Tomorrow III' reflects on vulnerability and hope. In daylight, the painting appears muted, its geometric void holding a sense of uncertainty. After dark, phosphorescent pigment transforms the image, revealing a luminosity that was always latent within it.

I am interested in this shift between what we can see and what remains hidden, and in the possibility that hope persists even when the future is uncertain.

LOVE YOU TO BITS. FINGERS TO THE BONE. NO WORDS. NOW WHAT? WINGING IT AGAIN.

The titles of @zenablackwellartist paintings tell an entire story.

Biding My Time. Trial and Error. Curveball. Go Backwards to Go Forwards.

An entire life in a few words.

Tonight I open “Winging It” at @liminal_gallery in Margate. And I think these paintings speak to something almost universally recognisable, particularly when it comes to motherhood and womaning (is that even a word?!).

The endless juggle. The compromises, exhaustion, unexpected detours and extraordinary amount of humour required to get through an ordinary Tuesday.

And the choice we make, again and again, to show up, love fiercely and do it all with some semblance of grace. Even when we’re making it up as we go along.

Zena’s paintings are strange, witty, tender and wonderfully unsettling. There’s real intelligence beneath all that glorious colour.

And something especially moving about an artist who spent years raising children, now turning that experience into art, in a gallery whose owner is herself on maternity leave!

This isn’t an emerging artist finding her voice. It’s an artist whose voice has been there all along, finally being heard.

And just a quick thought about collecting for you all: what if we bought art not as an investment, but because it understands something about our lives? Because it makes us laugh, wince or feel seen?

I believe people will look back and wish they’d discovered Zena sooner because she’s tapping into something so much of us feel so deeply.

17 paintings. £680–£4,500. And I’d LOVE to find them homes with people who get it.

Which title feels like your life right now? Mine might be Winging It Again. Although 80/20 is giving it a run for its money.

While the entire art world runs around London for Frieze Week, I ran away to hang paintings in Margate @liminal_gallery.

And frankly, I couldn’t be happier.

Meet @zenablackwellartist

An artist whose career hasn’t followed the neat trajectory the art world likes to reward. Life took precedence for a while. But talent doesn’t have an expiry date. Zena’s paintings are strange, tender, funny, unsettling and utterly singular. They explore childhood, identity and the peculiar psychological worlds we inhabit. I find them completely irresistible.

I’m enormously proud to be curating this exhibition and helping introduce Zena’s work to a wider audience.

We open tomorrow in Margate. A perfect antidote to the Frieze frenzy. And perhaps a reminder that some of the most exciting art isn’t where everyone else is looking. It takes an hour and a bit on the fast @sw_railway from @stpancrasinternational

Come see for yourself. ❤️
