Throwback to The National Society for Education in Art and Design magazine Autumn 2025 Educator Artist Researcher Issue, guest edited by Dr. Abbie Cairns.

It was a real pleasure and a privilege to be invited to contribute an article to this fabulous publication.

Huge congratulations to the other contributors and editorial team.

A fascinating read on contemporary issues in art and design education today. by @liminalstates

LEARNING IN LIMINAL SPACES

My photograph of the Wonky Bridge at Cabot Circus in Bristol is the cover image for this fabulous anthology on threshold concepts, where learning is seen as a struggle and a process of alienation and confusion that places learners in an in-between, troublesome, liminal state. As understandings grow this space of uncertainty metamorphoses into transformational insights. This leads to a potential loss of old beliefs, identities and self.

This book is the sixth collection on Threshold Concepts, following the 8th Biennial Conference in 2021. Contributions come from seasoned and new higher education practitioners, who explore its implications for pedagogy and professional practice. taken in Cabot Circus by @liminalstates

Well after six years and seven months I submitted my PhD by Fine Art practice. It has been the most intense experience of my life! Hours and hours, and hours of creating, reading, thinking and writing. Endless edits and iterations! It teaches you so much about patience, perseverance and sacrifice. So many exciting ideas have come from it that I can’t wait to explore! taken in Box, Wiltshire by @liminalstates
