I use to love making these posts. I know stillness is not sexy anymore and too many words are exhausting but it’s my post so I’ll care. While recovering from surgery this week, I’m reflecting on these little portable pieces that hold heritages family and sacredness. Feel free to like them or ignore them. by @lindacsmithstudio

“Next Time”….its a new season to make new work. I do not know why I’m constantly drawn to the civil war era items. Weird! by @lindacsmithstudio

I just saw the Ruth Asawa’s retrospective with some sweet friends from Art on the Go! I’ve always loved Asawa’s work but I did not know she had 6 kids while making a huge amount of work! I also didn’t know she was teaching as well! I love that she made mural sculptures with children in San Francisco and she said of all of the work she produced in her life, the work she did with kids was the most important. I love how the MoMa included her lesson plans into the show and displayed them as artwork. Teaching is an art form and lesson planning is an art. Performance art is a huge piece of teaching but the art world many times dismisses k-12 teachers as less than “ real artists”, pretension and egos can dominate the art world but kids, parenthood and teachers have a way to humble it! Caregivers and educators for kids may get ignored in the art world with residencies and shows but the fact that someone as profound and prolific as ruth Asawa saying that her work with kids is the most important in her career tells you what is most important in life. Asawa left the pomp, egos and pretense behind and focused on raising her 6 kids while filling the world with her vision and love for teaching and children! by @lindacsmithstudio

I’m not one for photos of myself but I’m proud of myself in this season. While teaching summer school I’ve been in my studio everyday! I’ll be in a group show this fall which I’ll share more details soon but despite my 4:45am wake ups for summer school I’m active, I’m present and I’m making work which has been such a loving and thoughtful and empathetic friend to me! I was recently reading a book by Immaculee Ilibagiza and she mentioned a gorgeous Rwandan word called “Intarambirwa” which means “those who persevere”. Thank you Prossy for that pronunciation and thanks to my Art process for never judging, always loving and allowing me to express myself in my journey and to heal in my own time💙 by @lindacsmithstudio

I’ve rarely had time to just sit with my work and recently I have. I so wish I could just make individual works but I work with pieces as a whole not as separates. My installations are essentially one whole piece. I entitled this one “ Love Letter to the Remnant”, not sure if this letter is to me, a lost friend, a lost family member, to a world at war & loss or to all of it! My practice is very important right now, probably vital for me before everything else! by @lindacsmithstudio
