New York City-based artist, whose art remembers individuals and events that history may have forgotten.

As Linda Smith's work continues to evolve, so does its meaning. Her imagery and sculptures occupy transitory spaces that move through the ephemeral and the constant, desire and loss, the temporal and the eternal.

The artist's “Golden Series'' is made of silk chiffon wrapped in pieces of bent metal. Smith uses a hydraulic press to assist in manipulating the material before wrapping metal wire around the forms, creating a golden rust effect. Organically the strips of fiber start to rust from the close contact with the wire. Smith then uses goose eggs to achieve the oval shape that is eventually hung.

In “Redemption,” Smith chose a larger circular shape as a mold before wrapping paper. Repeating the natural rusting process that is used in her “Golden Series,” and using a blow torch to burn into its edges.

In the last few months I started working in collaboration with the @ywashhts on a new art-community project. As the curator of ‘Values Walking Tour’, I feel blessed to have gotten this opportunity to engage with the artist community of northern manhattan.
In current days, when the concept of art exhibitions is in deep need of reinventing itself, we decided to take the art out to both the urban sphere and Online: through posters distributed around the neighborhoods of Northern Manhattan, with QR codes which people can easily scan (even technophobes as myself) we created monthly platforms of featured artists responding to different humanitarian values celebrated each month.
The value of January is Justice, and Linda Smith is the featured artist of this month.
Check out @laughing_linda work, my curator’s note and Rabbi Ari Perten’s take on Justice at the Y’s website.
Next month is all about Human dignity, stay tuned..
A Big thank you to Rabbi Ari Perten and @the.lisa.michelle.kucharz , the power team that made this happen ✨

BTW- still accepting submissions to future months on an ongoing basis! Artists residing in Northern Manhattan (Harlem and up) are welcome to apply - Open call is at the @ywashhts website

In Numbers 27, the daughters of Zelophehad went to Moses and made an unprecedented request.
They said: “Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.” God told Moses they were right and changed the law for them. They were granted an identity and recorded in the census because of their boldness. Nothing is impossible for him. ‭‭

Dear Friends,

For all the right reasons in these dark times, the Member Artists of Cornerstone Studios have been unable to access their studios at Our Saviour's Atonement Church since March 13, 2020, at 7:00 pm. We will have been out two weeks tomorrow. As you know, most artists do not have deep pockets. Most churches don't either. Many, many people in our community are suffering or will suffer as a result of the COVID-19 coronavirus. Art going on hiatus is NOT the most pressing problem during a global pandemic. But our heart goes out to neighborhood artists in straightened circumstances who may not be able to afford space in which to make work once this virus is consigned to the dustbin of history.
So. If your circumstances are such, at this time, that you can help, all donations to Cornerstone Studios will go 100% to assist our twelve Member Artists and our Studio178 resident pay their rent. Click on link in bio to donate. We hate to ask. Truly. We love our neighbors. It is an honor and a privilege to have space at OSA. We could not ask for better hosts. (If you can help them too, please do.) We are here for you, and because of you. If we can be of any assistance, please let us know. // Jeff Hoppa, Executive Director // “We shall draw from the heart of suffering itself the means of inspiration and survival." ~ Winston Churchill
