MAY SO FAR 🤠💃 by @lindarabiosa

Feeling and expression over technique. ❤️‍🔥

And giving yourself permission to add your own flavor to your dance, shamelessly.

What many times happens in Europe is going to classes branded as "traditional" or "dominican" bachata, where we easy get stuck over micro-details like, where your chin needs to be. To me, this puts us in a position where we try to teach an Afro Caribbean dance like ballet.

In Europe, we heavily focus on technique. But we rarely see dancers take that next step to inject their own raw style and authentic expression into it.

I think focusing on foundation is important, but foundation is more than just a technique. Plus it misses the personal style part.

As a visitor in this culture, my observations are rooted entirely in what I’ve been fortunate enough to experience in the DR. I don't own this culture or claim to be the ultimate authority on it. I'm simply sharing how learning at the source changed my entire perspective.

My foundation still very much work in progress, and I’m working on it every single day.

However, I firmly believe that prioritizing expression over technical perfection is the exact thing that keeps the soul of the dance alive and keeps us coming back to the dance floor.

What do you guys think?

Btw. If you visit Santo Domingo, I recommend visiting @irimostudio 🤍

Who else feels the groove every time a Toby Love song comes on? 😎

I'm privileged to follow artists that talk about the groove in bachata and I think it should be more widely taught than it's today!

In the end, bachata is music rhat has percussions and different rhythms. That's we shouldn't treat it like ballet or other styles without groove (even though they are beautiful styles). 🤍

Thinking about your first bachata battle? I'm sure you're not the only one!

If I'll get minimum 20 people on the waitlist, we're gonna meet online with a class that fully focuses on getting ready for your bachata battle, plus you'll have a workbook for your preparation.

We'll see how many of you there are 🙏

This quote is one of the reasons I feel bachata and why I dance it.

It is amargue; it is the bittersweet feeling that we all have experienced.

"Mucha gente dice que los hombres no lloran.
Claro, nosotros los hombres tenemos sentimientos.
Lo que pasa es que nosotros los hombres a veces somos duro para expresar ese sentimiento que tenemos..."

- @dalvinmelody

The melancholy that Dominican songs tell of is usually related to love. I think Finnish people carry that melancholy in our culture.

I hear many times that Finnish people are quiet, calm, and do not show emotions. I think that is true.

It might not be love, heartbreak, or other typical bachata topics, but it is a struggle and trauma inherited from the generations before us: trying to defend our own country and independence, losing homes and lives because of that. Yet, we see other nations all around the world fighting for their existence today.

I know and see a lot of men who do not cry in Finland.

I know and see a lot of men who do not cry in the news.

I think the world would be a better place if they did.

What would you add to the list?

I love how @claudio_rnv and @diostyle_official teaches the 4 different factors that we need to connect with in our dance. For instance "me" and "music" are two of them.

In general, I think we should spend more time on those factors and deepend the relationship as social dancers.

Honestly, I love classes where you get to DRILL 🥰

It might be because I'm used to those as I come from freestyle based dance styles, like hip hop and house.

Choreo has its own purpose, but I don't think it allows us to practice technique and foundation holistically.

Here's how 🕛COUNTER HIP CLOCK🕛 works:

1️⃣ Imagine or use tape to mark different clock sectors on the floor

2️⃣ Tackle first your counter hip execution horizontally and vertically (9 and 3 plus 12 and 6 in the clock). Execute your counter hip within the cucaracha / lateral basic / side step with the merenque structure (which ever name you have learned step with)

3️⃣ Execute the counter hip within the remaining sectors (diagonals)

4️⃣ Start playing with random sectors per side, e.g. if you do the 6 with your help, do 1 on your right next. Remember to keep the counter hip all the time!
