Yesterday was National Daughter’s Day. So, I’m posting this today.
Mine’s pretty sick right now and I snapped this pick during just one of our visits to Sick Kids this week.
Dominique is battling leukemia. She has childhood cancer. She’s one of the lucky ones and has made it to maintenance. She’s is in the last year of treatment.
The past 2 years have flown by and yet stood painfully still - all at the same time. Weird how living in survival mode can mess up your sense of time like that…
But, as we move forward and as she@moves towards that finish line, I’m beginning to ask myself what the rest of life looks like, for her, for me - for us as her parents…for her brother…our little family as a whole….?
I don’t want leukemia to define her. And yet - how can it not?
Her 2 year diagnosis anniversary is coming up. I can feel my whole body bristle at the coming change of season, the shift if the sun in the sky and my mind is flooded with the memories of 2 years ago.
I keep telling Dom, “Run”….”Run towards your big, beautiful life…and don’t ever look back…” Knowing full well, that I won’t be able to do that along with her. And that’s the pact I’m going to try and keep.
I’ll hold the memories, the scars, the worries, the fears of what childhood cancer means for her, for the rest of her life. And she can just go out in the world, and love life, being just - Dominique. My girl. Like she was before, October 21st 2024.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month.
And today is World ALL Day — a day dedicated to raising awareness for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Childhood cancer rips your world apart.

And the truth is, it never really puts it back together again.

You just learn how to move forward differently.
In a different way. In a different form.
You adjust to a life you never imagined living. You carry the fear, the trauma, the scars — visible and invisible — while somehow continuing to find joy, hope and reasons to celebrate.

Cancer isn’t just chemo.
It isn’t just hospital stays, blood counts, procedures and medications.

It’s missed school. Missed birthdays. Missed childhood.
It’s parents putting careers and lives on hold.
It’s siblings learning things no child should have to understand.
It’s watching your child endure things you would give anything to take from them.

And even on the good days, cancer is still there — somewhere in the background.

But so is hope.
So is resilience.
So is the determination to keep moving forward.

Today, we raise awareness for ALL — for the children fighting, the children who have finished treatment, the children who have relapsed, the children we have lost, and the families whose lives will forever be divided into before cancer and after.

This is childhood cancer.
This is leukemia.
THIS IS CANCER. 🎗️🧡💛

Spidey has a turnout! 🫰🫰😉

We popped into support @carlyhebscher and her amazing Foundation Logan’s Light, the last week of August.

She threw together a summer get gathering to raise funds for gift cards to support Oncology families on the 8th floor of @sickkidstoronto

While we were there, Spiderman wanted to show us his moves and turns out - his turnout and hand formations aren’t bad! 👏

First week of Grade 9 in the books for my love. ❤️

He’s growing like a weed, and somehow we can’t keep up with just how much of a teenager he’s become. 🥹

— and just like that, we have a high schooler. ❤️ and we couldn’t be more proud of him 🫰

Finally, a summer. ❤️

After losing the last two summers to cancer, this was the summer together we so desperately needed.

Concerts, a Montreal road trip, Osheaga (🫣), piano exams, Campfire Circle for BOTH kids, visits with friends, dinners, a Confirmation — and even a little prize thanks to @scrubsinthecityy and @dilawrigroup Group. 😉🙏🏻 ✨

Dom is still in treatment. She’s still fighting. But compared to last summer, and the summer before that, this one felt like absolute heaven.

And we’re not done yet…

Until the bad weather rolls in, we’re squeezing every last drop out of it — catching up on time with friends and family, making memories, and reclaiming some of the togetherness we’ve missed so much.

This was our summer. Finally. ❤️ by @lindooch

A bag journey from Canada to Qatar… from Dominique to Zeina 🤍

Sometimes, people come into our lives through our pain… and somehow become some of the closest people to our hearts, even though we have never met them in person.

That’s how Linda came into my life. She told me when I first talked to her that we are “momcologists” golden moms, stronger together..

I found her while searching for information about leukemia. One simple message turned into a real connection. She started checking in on Zeina all the time, and Dominique became someone I and Zeina often thought about ..

When Linda told me about the Blina phase and the bag she had designed for Dominique to make carrying the treatment easier, she decided to send Dominique’s bag all the way to Zeina.

At first, I thought it was simply a pink bag that looked nicer than the black hospital bag.

But when it arrived, I realized how much such a small detail could actually help.. the way it is carried, and how comfortable and practical the design is for a child.

Linda also sent gifts with it, and Dominique recorded a video for Zeina, telling her about her own experience with Blina..

That video alone eased so much of the fear Zeina had been carrying..

Thank you, Linda and Dominique… from the bottom of my heart. 🤍 #luekemia #childhoodcancer #sidra @lindooch @meeky_and_me_thru_ by @lindooch

What an EPIC night at the Ed Sheeran @teddysphotos concert 🎶🧡😍
A huge thank you to SickKids @sickkidsvs and Rogers Media @rogers @rogersmediapr for the incredible invitation. Another memory made for these two music loving besties! Nights like this are so special a little distraction from everything they’ve been through, a chance to just be kids, laugh, dance, have fun and feel a sense of normalcy. We had the absolute BEST time, and Ed @teddysphotos was simply incredible 🧡😍 #pediatriccancerawareness #warriors #bestfriend #cancer taken in Roger Center Toronto Blue Jays Stadium by @lindooch

A-Vascular Necrosis - Part 1: BONES🦴

During VOD a year ago, the team decided to investigate the excruciating pain Dominique was having in her bacK-right hip.

VOD is incredible painful, but after the enzymes started to lower, with the medicine doing its job, the persisting pain in her back right hip and low back was puzzling.

A CT Scan found damage to her right hip bone from lack of blood flow…something called A-Vascular Necrosis.

High-dose steroids used in Canada for paediatric Leukemia treatment, can have a side effect of harshness on the body - blocking off blood flow to bones.

Just as we were ending a month-long stay for VOD (the scariest aspect of Meeky’s whole treatment aside from learning of her condition and the battle she had ahead of her) we were entering a whole new chapter of outcomes from steroids used in the treatment…bone tissue loss.

Uncovered in her hip, Dominique’s necrosis would prove to be yet another hurdle for her and one that would have life-long effects.

This past year has hit us all hard. Watching Dominique manage yet another medical struggle has been at times defeating - but, triumphant too. As I promised her, we’ve found her rainbows 🌈

Part II of Necrosis and the past year to follow…

This is childhood cancer🎗️💛
