You don’t really get over watching your child slowly die.

And that’s exactly what was happening for two months leading up to October 21, 2024.

I could give you the statistics. The symptoms we saw and how early they began. How much leukemia was in her bone marrow at diagnosis. The risks that come with treatment. The layers of grief we’ve lived through—anticipatory grief and all the other things we now have names for.

But on tomorrow’s diagnosis anniversary, what I keep coming back to is this: none of us are the people we were on this day two years ago. Not Dominique. Not Andrea. And certainly not Davide and me.

The weight of that—the loss of innocence, of a carefree way of moving through life—can some days, feel unbearable.

Sleeping. Eating. Going to events. Even making small talk. The most ordinary parts of being a person have become some of the hardest.

We feel like cut-outs of ourselves, moving through the steps of our lives. Clinging to birthdays, holidays and calendar milestones. Checking things off as the years pass.

But in the back of our minds, we wait. Afraid that one of those statistics will become our reality and Dominique’s life will be thrown back into peril.

It’s hard to feel much else when the word peril belongs in the same sentence as your child’s name.

I took this video the morning after she was admitted. Something about that trip back to SickKids, at three in the morning on October 19, told me to start recording. So I did.

This is the last video I have of her before diagnosis. Before she changed. Before we changed.

Her hair. Her skin. Her million-dollar smile. The way she walked. Her little teeth. I dream of this version of her almost every night.

One day, I’ll tell her about the girl she was before cancer. How full of life she was. How much she loved Girl Guides and baking and helping organize the Invisibobble drawers at Daddy’s work. All the little things that filled her days.

So she knows she had a beautiful, carefree life before the heaviness of cancer came.

And how much I wish I could have kept it that way for her ✨

Last year, back-to-school was horrendous.

While kids everywhere were packing backpacks, meeting their teachers and heading back into classrooms, Dominique was in the hospital for almost a month battling VOD. Back-to-school was very much on our minds, and knowing that life was moving forward outside those hospital walls — while she was so sick and going through so much — made that time even harder on her mental health.

This year feels very, very different. ❤️

After missing two full years of school, Dominique has officially let go of home instruction and is ready to find her own path forward academically. She’ll start with a few days, build from there, and work toward a full-time schedule when she feels ready — all while completing her final year of chemotherapy.

We could never forget the trauma of VOD or where we were just one year ago. But today, we get to celebrate how incredibly far Meeky has come and how well she’s doing.

This is a BIG milestone.

Her school community — the teachers, kids and families — has been so wonderful, and I know they’ll be there for her as she navigates her way back into the classroom, back into a routine and, most importantly, back to simply being a regular kid in Grade 6.

One day at a time. One class at a time. One milestone at a time.

LET’S GO, GRADE 6! 📚✏️🎒❤️

So proud of you, Meeky. ❤️

What an EPIC night at the Ed Sheeran @teddysphotos concert 🎶🧡😍
A huge thank you to SickKids @sickkidsvs and Rogers Media @rogers @rogersmediapr for the incredible invitation. Another memory made for these two music loving besties! Nights like this are so special a little distraction from everything they’ve been through, a chance to just be kids, laugh, dance, have fun and feel a sense of normalcy. We had the absolute BEST time, and Ed @teddysphotos was simply incredible 🧡😍 #pediatriccancerawareness #warriors #bestfriend #cancer
