The three things that I will never forget about Scotland are the air, the history, and the mountains which were like no others I have yet visited on earth. Choosing 20 photos for a photo dump was impossible, missing from this set are Loch Ness, the Urquart Castle, and Ben Nevis, so I may have to do another post sometime when I get overcome with how I felt when I left this magical country. I am so grateful to my legs, my body, and my strong AF family who allowed me to disappear on a few epic hikes in the Western Highlands. by @linesonledges

Needlework is very nearly an extinct art form. I found this out last year looking for projects at Michael’s, where in one of the farthest corners of the store they had exactly three dusty kits not even designed by humans. I have always loved making pictures with needles and thread, due to the repetition, precision, and sculptural technique required that seems to soothe my particular neurotype. I think that the modern world is devoid of patience and time (both are required in large amounts for embroidery), not to mention how our near constant immersion in an infinite world of blue light and screens has led to a sensory overwhelm that has sucked the colour, care, whimsy, and attention to detail that design used to incorporate from just about everything (houses, cars, fast food restaurant chains, baby clothes, residential architecture, you name it, it is now shabbily designed, boring, and dull as death). This current iteration of society/civilization seems to have all but destroyed our interest in using the bits of thread and dyed wool lying around to liven up our walls, clothes, upholstery, and linens that we used to possess. But I was gifted this lovely little Nordic-adjacent stitching project put together by a small company in Nova Scotia and finishing it kept me sane during a quiet, lonely, reflective week alone. I just ordered two more kits to get me through the summer, when the people I know seem to scatter out in all directions, leaving me by myself with lots of time to sit outside in a lawn chair somewhere pushing a needle carrying vibrant coloured thread up and down through a bit of linen stretched on a hoop listening to the birds, looking up from my work occasionally to watch the light filter through the trees. #needlepoint #embroidery #hygge #hooklineandtinker by @linesonledges

I have not written a poem in so so long, mostly due to some huge (good/positive) shifts in my life, and tendency to channel sad/negative/dark stuff into writing. But a few weeks ago up north I stepped out onto the deck with my coffee in the morning and a little juvenile hawk (which I initially thought was a Merlin but was actually a juvenile Sharp-Shinned Hawk because he/she had a yellow eye) was flapping around in the throes of death having crashed ill-fatedly into one of the huge windows (why oh why do lake dwellers insist on these bird murdering architectural features). Laying him/her on a quiet birch stump behind the sauna to die set off a poem going which I finally fine tuned today on a quiet Saturday. I am not pretending it’s good. Always create for yourself first and foremost. ✨🫶🏻 #poem #wordwitch #autumnpoetry #womenwhowrite #amateurpoet #poetrycommunity by @linesonledges

I was prepared for the grey hair, fine lines, achy bones, and age spots; but something that I didn’t expect with mid-age was self-doubt and declining confidence. That part snuck up on me. Here is me bailing on the crux move of Potato Chips (V2), and here is also me going for it and realizing that I once again underestimated myself—nearly missing out on sending an awesome classic crimp line. I am working on the confidence thing. 🫶🏻 #bouldering #crimpinainteasy #gratitude #climbingfriends #redrockcanyon #sandstone #climbing_is_my_passion by @linesonledges

Over several years, the snow fell across the entire expanse of your face.
The weight of it on you until your collapse.
Fleeing comes at the cost of freedom,
and this warning, like you, was forgotten.

It is still teeming and warm in the city,
under a spent nuclear reactor sky,
we are colourful.
Down in the music and mud are the soft bodies that you remember, from time to time, when the thread connects in your decaying mind;
We who are steeped in the real, more difficult forms of love.

Sometimes it is nice when someone reads a poem to you. This is my favourite #wintersolstice poem to read, it is a bit of a tradition, though St. Lucy’s Day was three days ago and I am a bit late. #wintersolstice #johndonne #stlucysday #poetry #poetrycommunity #poem by @linesonledges

November reminds me of how the sun is slowly setting on my own life.

Remaining light sinks to the lowest angles, exposing the most remote corners, the last of the gold has frost’s rust on the edges.

Summer’s seeds having been freed on a cold wind, there is now a vast darkness extending beyond the winter sun.

If you tilt your chin to the zenith you can still see the particle traces of an imploding heart.

I can still see you here with me, strange friend,
Do not ask me how
For I would not be able to tell you.

If it be your will
That I speak no more
And my voice be still
As it was before

If it be your will
That a voice be true
From this broken hill
I will sing to you -Leonard Cohen

Silence can be an instrument,
a defining silhouette of sound,
an accompaniment to the negative space
stretching between two distant shapes.

Set to the impossible harmony of dissonance
the quarter-steps taken are too familiar.
Conflict becomes a soundtrack,
the heart, a hollowed out drum.
