Behind the scenes of our @esquiremalaysia August issue — The Malaysian Issue. We wanted to make this one really special, so we doubled down, bringing together two actors from two different generations. Deep and heartwarming conversation ensued. Somehow, we also got a billboard on Jalan Tun Razak.

How does a song travel through time? Some songs are unearthed on old tapes at yard sales, some are sampled into new music decades or centuries later.

More recently, streaming and social media have changed the way we listen to music. TV, films and memes are bringing back songs from decades ago, introducing vintage hits to a new generation. See: Kate Bush, Fleetwood Mac and Jeff Buckley.

It’s a lottery that not everybody wins, but these comeback stories can make or break a musician’s retirement fund.

“A song’s comeback can hinge on a fifteen second clip,” writes Managing Editor @linglowww. “It’s anyone’s guess what that clip might be.”

Cover story and creative direction for @esquiremalaysia

For our launch issue (and my first cover story), I interviewed comedian Ronny Chieng.

It took me back to my very first freelance article for Esquire. It was 2012. I was a young, earnest writer who nervously emailed then Editor-in-Chief Sam Coleman. My first assignment: interviewing comedians about the future of Malaysian comedy.

I guess I’m in the future now—at least, 14 years into the future. I think past me would be surprised. I left the magazine industry a while ago, yet here I am again.

Thanks, Sam, for taking a chance on me with that first assignment. Thanks, Stuart, for trusting me with this one.

And thank you to everyone, from KL to LA to NY, who made this happen.
