Hey, I’m Atalya 👋🏾
IBCLC. Perinatal nutrition expert. Public health girlie. And a mom who knows firsthand that feeding a baby can be beautiful and stressful as hell.

I help families with breastfeeding, pumping, weaning, and postpartum nutrition—but I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all care or fear-based advice.
I care about what’s actually going on:
🍼 how baby is feeding
🫶🏾 how your body is responding
🥗 whether you’re eating enough
🧠 how tired, touched-out, or overwhelmed you are
Because most feeding issues aren’t just about milk.
I work with parents navigating pain, low or high supply, pumping struggles, tongue ties, returning to work, and the pressure to have it all figured out while still healing.

If feeding feels harder than you expected, I need you to hear this:
You’re not doing it wrong. You’re doing something demanding.

If you’re new here—welcome 🤍
If you’ve been here—thank you for trusting me with such a tender season.

Your hormones are part of your breastfeeding story. 🍼
Sometimes you’re doing ALL the things—feeding frequently, pumping, eating, drinking your water, taking the supplements—and your milk supply still isn’t responding the way you expected.
And sometimes, the missing piece isn’t effort. It’s hormones.
Things like thyroid disorders, PCOS, diabetes, insulin resistance, hormonal imbalances, and certain reproductive health conditions can affect lactation by influencing ovulation, breast development, milk production, or the hormones responsible for milk ejection.
That doesn’t mean breastfeeding won’t work for you.
It means your breastfeeding journey may need a deeper look at the whole picture instead of another “just pump more” response.
Your body isn’t failing you.
Your story just might require a little more investigation. 👀
This is why a thorough lactation assessment matters.
Because sometimes the question isn’t “What am I doing wrong?”
It’s “What is my body trying to tell me?”
Save this for later + send it to the mama who needs to hear that her supply concerns deserve to be taken seriously.

The Breastfeeding Baddie is OUT OUT 🧳✈️✨

LGS Perinatal Services will be taking a little break from the milk magic while I rest, recharge, travel, and mind my business. 🤭

If you’re an existing client, please continue to use your usual communication channels and allow a little extra time for responses.

If you’re looking to book a new lactation consultation, appointments will resume 9/4. New meal prep clients are being accepted for October 2026 and beyond.

Until then… drink your water, feed that baby, and don’t let anybody stress you out about your milk. 😂

See y’all soon, baddies. 💛

Happy Black Breastfeeding Week, y’all! 🖤🍼
This year’s theme — “We All We Got: 15 Years of Community, Care, and Collective Power” — hits different, because it’s the truth. Fifteen years since a group of Black breastfeeding advocates said enough and built a week dedicated to us, on purpose.

Let’s be clear on why this week exists: Black infants are breastfed at lower rates than the national average, and that’s not a “choice” problem — it’s a systems problem. It’s hospitals that don’t train staff in equitable lactation care. It’s workplaces that ignore pumping rights. It’s a lactation field that historically didn’t reflect the families it served. It’s the weight of generational trauma tied to feeding our babies that most folks never even name.
Black Breastfeeding Week isn’t just about awareness — it’s about correcting the record. It’s about showing Black families that breastfeeding belongs to us too, that our ancestors nursed nations, and that support should never be something we have to fight for.

So this week, we celebrate. We uplift the lactation consultants, doulas, peer counselors, and mamas doing this work in community, because when the systems fail us — we all we got. And that’s been more than enough.
📣 Stay tuned — highlights from this year’s ROSE Breastfeeding Conference (@support_rose) are coming your way, straight from the NOLA streets. We’re talking breastfeeding, culture, and community the way only NOLA can hold it. 👀🎙️

Let’s talk about the number that stresses out damn near every new parent: the scale. ⚖️
You leave the hospital and suddenly everyone has an opinion about your baby’s weight — the pediatrician, the lactation consultant, your mama, your mother-in-law, the group chat. And if nobody’s explained why the number moves the way it does, it’s easy to spiral into thinking every ounce is a referendum on whether you’re doing this right.
So let’s slow down and actually break it down.

Weight loss after birth is normal. Up to 7% is expected — not a failure, not a sign your milk “isn’t in yet”.

A lot of that early loss is just baby shedding extra fluid, especially if you had an epidural or IV fluids during labor. That fluid can inflate birth weight in the first place, which means some of that “loss” everyone panics about isn’t loss at all — it’s just baby’s body finding its actual baseline.

Most babies are back to birth weight by 10–14 days. After that, breastfed babies tend to gain quickly for the first few months, then naturally slow down around 3–6 months. That slowdown is not your supply failing you. It’s biology doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.

And the chart matters. The WHO growth curve is built from data on breastfed babies — which is why it’s the standard for tracking breastfed infant growth, and why it looks different from the older CDC charts built on formula-fed data. If your provider is using the wrong chart, you could be getting compared to a growth pattern that was never designed for your baby in the first place.

Weight isn’t the whole story either. Scales differ visit to visit. Clothes and diapers add ounces. Time of day matters. Latch, tongue tie, illness, prematurity, delayed milk coming in — all of it plays a role. One number, on one day, in one appointment, is a snapshot — not a final verdict.

This is exactly the kind of thing I help families work through — because you deserve someone who can actually explain what’s happening, not just hand you a percentile and walk out the room.

Here’s how I can help:
🐻 In-home weight checks & feeding assessments — I bring the scale to you, right where you and baby are most comfortable

August is National Breastfeeding Month 🤎✨ and it’s more than just awareness—it’s about ACTION.
Because let’s be real…
Breastfeeding isn’t failing families.
Systems are.
When only 1 in 4 babies are exclusively breastfed at 6 months, that’s not about “lack of effort”—that’s about lack of support.
No paid leave.
No real workplace protection.
Not enough culturally competent care.
And Black families? We’re navigating all of that AND systemic barriers at the same time.
This month (and every month), we advocate.
We educate.
We build the village that should’ve already been there.
Because breastfeeding might be natural…
but it was never meant to be done alone. 🤎

Breastfeeding Baddie, clocking in. 💻🍼

Going back to work while breastfeeding isn’t just a “time management” issue — it’s a system you have to navigate on top of everything else you’re already carrying. Here’s what to know:

1️⃣ Know your rights. The PUMP Act (2022) protects your break time to pump for up to a year postpartum — and Georgia law backs that up too. This isn’t a favor from your employer. It’s the law.

2️⃣ Vet your daycare like it’s a job interview (because it is). Ask directly about their breastmilk handling policies before you commit. A daycare that supports your feeding goals is worth just as much as one with a good curriculum.

3️⃣ You don’t have to figure this out alone. A lactation consultant builds a plan around YOUR job, YOUR schedule, YOUR baby — not your cousin’s routine or a generic pamphlet.

Ready to build your plan? Book a lactation visit at LGS Perinatal Services 🧡 Insurance accepted (Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, Tricare + More!)

Nobody warned me that struggling with your milk and struggling with your mind would show up at the same time. And for a lot of us — that’s exactly what happened.
Your mental health and your breastfeeding journey are connected. When your nervous system is stressed, depleted, and unsupported — your milk feels it. That’s not failure. That’s biology responding to a system that was never built to catch us.
Black women are more likely to experience PMADs postpartum and less likely to be screened or treated for them. And we’re also less likely to receive adequate lactation support. That’s not a coincidence. That’s the same gap showing up twice.
The good news? There are people doing something about it.
Keisha Reaves of @pushthrumom built Push Thru Therapy specifically to make mental health care accessible and culturally relevant for Black women — with a team trained in perinatal mood disorders and the full scope of the Black maternal experience.
And LGS Perinatal Services exists because your lactation care should see all of you — not just the latch.
Postpartum is hard. Breastfeeding is hard. Doing both while your mental health is struggling and the support isn’t there is a lot to carry. You don’t have to carry it alone anymore.
@pushthrumom has your mind. LGS Perinatal Services has your milk. We’re both here and both accepting new clients. Link in bio.

The preeclampsia to breastfeeding struggle pipeline — and why your care team stayed quiet.
Black women are significantly more likely to develop preeclampsia — and the consequences don’t stop at delivery. They follow you into your postpartum body, your milk supply, and your breastfeeding journey. And most of us are sent home without a single word about it.
Preeclampsia can delay your milk coming in. The magnesium that saved your life can slow your supply. The separation, the stress, the exhaustion — all of it shows up at the breast. You didn’t fail. You were under-supported through a medical crisis and handed a pamphlet about latching.

Dr. Katherine Sylvester — physical therapist, VBAC doula, preeclampsia survivor, and founder of @operationmist — built Operation M.I.S.T. because she lived this. An OB once told her that based on her skin color, age, and location, her body wasn’t fit to have more children. She went on to build a remote monitoring program that tracks each woman’s individual baselines — not population assumptions — measuring blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen levels, sleep, and stress 24 hours a day.

That’s the standard Black mothers deserve. Individualized. Continuous. Believing in the design of our bodies.
At LGS Perinatal Services we bring that same energy to your lactation care. Because your breastfeeding journey deserved support from day one — not silence.
Consults open. In person + virtual. Insurance accepted.
