I try to walk a couple of miles every day that I’m not working and the weather is nice. In other words, not often enough. My usual route is on the Riverwalk up to the lighthouse. Yesterday when I got to the lighthouse, the gate was unlocked and there were people there. Apparently it is open from 10-3 on Thursdays (through November 1). It’s pretty cool. It’s also open on Sundays for guided tours, but you have to register in advance.

It would be a lovely fall day to come and have lunch at the Rivermarket or The Farmer and the Fish (or even DeCicco’s upstairs) and visit. Right in my own backyard.

Follow me for more tips on how to spend your time.

Honestly. It’s the little things, isn’t it?

When we were in Sicily, we changed hotels every day. Paulie style. Every day, I neatly wound up all my charging cords and put them in a little bag. When I opened the bag that night, it was as if they had a wild party in there. They were all tangled up with each other. First world problem, I know. But still annoying.

So I made a few of these yesterday. Cute. Easy. Quick. They make me happy. It’s the little things.

So of course I had to buy a snap kit. Because I need more craft stuff.

Our last full day in Sicily. I am officially in love with this place. I will definitely be back. Whether they want me or not.

We spent the morning in Castlemola, the afternoon in Messina and the evening in Cefalu. All glorious.

But. Castlemola threw me for a loop. When I saw the road signs, I told Paul it sounded familiar. But there are many Castle-places in Europe. It is touted as the prettiest village in Sicily, high on a cliff above Taormina. We were told it was best to take a cab, as it is difficult to park, and that is easy to catch a cab back. When we arrived, I told Paul I thought we had been there before. No way, he said. We happened upon a bar decorated with phalluses (phalli?). Art. Lamps. Statues. Bathroom fixtures. I said I was sure I had seen this before. I searched my camera roll. We were here in 2023. How did we not remember? Then we tried to cab back. Impossible. At last we decided to walk down, as we saw no other option. It’s a steep walk down switchback roads with no sidewalks. A little ways down a kindly cab driver, who was previously booked and couldn’t take us, called his friend to drive us.

Again I am asking myself. Are we too old for this? How is it possible that we don’t remember visiting the prettiest village in Sicily? What happens when two 71 year old are stranded in a village on a cliff and can’t figure how to get down? Will our children soon be telling us we shouldn’t be doing this anymore? Do we have to listen if they do?

Catania in the morning. The ancient amphitheater and theater. Beautiful, if crowded, Taormina in the afternoon. The last picture is The White Lotus hotel.

A hotel appreciation post @asmundodigisira_catania

When you book hotels in new places online, it’s a bit of a crapshoot. We look in a certain price range, in a certain location. We aim for four stars. Sometimes a four star feels like a five, sometimes like a two.

We stayed in Siracusa on Monday. The hotel was rated four star. It was…interesting. It was also being used as a convent. Nuns in habits were gathered in the lobby, watching tv and surfing the net. I have nothing against nuns. It was just peculiar. There were so many cats. They were hanging out on the couches and in the cat condo. The room was musty. The bathroom had too much mold. No shampoo. The shower didn’t drain. The people who ran it were nice but I was glad it was for only one night.

Last night we stayed in Catania. As we pulled up, the street looked…gritty. Uh oh. (I definitely need to work on my judge-y-ness.) But this was probably the nicest hotel I’ve ever experienced. It was part hotel, part museum. It was a converted palazzo from the early 1700s. Rooms didn’t have numbers. Our room was third floor, next to the Murano mirror. The bathroom had its own balcony. The common spaces were remarkable. The breakfast on the terrace was delicious. The staff could not have been nicer and more helpful. And. It was slightly less expensive than the cats and nuns. Just look at the pictures.

Five stars plus.

Siracusa in the morning. The cathedral was built over the ancient temple to Athena and they incorporated the Doric columns into the walls of the structure.

This afternoon, we checked another item off my bucket list - we hiked (a little) on Mt. Etna. I didn’t see Vulcan. It was very windy up there, as you can see from my picture, and I definitely ate some volcanic dust. Apparently the volcano was acting up enough last week to cause some airport problems, but all was quiet today.

This evening we arrived in Catania, another beautiful and gritty city. I say that quite a bit here…beautiful and gritty. It appears to be the identity of Sicily.

We’re burning up the roads here.

Morning in Ragusa. Our wonderful and quirky hotel. I did touch for lucky.

Midday in Modica. We completed three of the ten things you must try in Sicily: arancino, Sicilian granite and Modica chocolate. (There are a few on that list I won’t be trying.)

Late afternoon in Noto. Meh.

Evening in Siracusa. This is a big, gritty city. There are ruins of a temple to Apollo, so there’s that.

So. Many. Churches.
