@lisablas_studio Dawn - Spaces of Healing - Dusk : “Call it a chromatic choreography thought and performed far beyond the pacific wall: emerging from the Chamorro villages, it’s layered in between the West Coast’s explosion of light and the East Coast where Lisa Blas has dwelled for so long. This chromatic choreography lives on in northern Europe, again between other chromatic spaces, the Giverny green and the Flemish grey. In this sense, since art can’t do more than formulate requests, ideals and desires, every canvas is a periphery that desires to temporarily be a centre, to capture the gaze and define an interior … until it passes to the next. These are dialectical canvasses: they mediate between the peripheries of the world, the periphery of vision and a centre that is nothing more than a transitory working of attention, somewhere between the free play of imagination and memory. Where have I seen this before and where do I want to see it again, for how long and where am I going from here?

Lisa Blas’s Peripheries invites you to grasp the sense of place, history and identity as a series of visual hemispheres that delineate the transitions of life in terms of colourful planes.”

🔹🔷 Lisa Blas | Spaces of Healing | UZ Brussel Hospital, Jette, Belgium | Open until May 1st🔹🔷

🌕🔷Last days of my installation at @uzbrussel, in Jette—These past three months have flown by, and the ambient light has tilted from winter into spring, dawn to dusk.

Many thanks to all the staff at UZ Brussel, the public, family, friends and colleagues who have visited the work in situ—and experienced the flow of chroma within the ground floor entrance and waiting room of the hospital—spaces where we experience a range of private emotions in public. In May, I’m thrilled to begin new research and work in collaboration, addressing a similar scale in the space of performance—until soon! 🙏🏾🔷🌕

🕯️25 years……

A quiet day thus far, as it always is on September 11th.

A handful of months later, in early 2012, I traveled to New York to visit my friend Matt. I know I took pictures of the site, but I can’t find them—most likely they are in a folder on an old hard drive, but perhaps they are meant to be lost.

There were two encounters that continue to stay close. After visiting the unimaginable destruction, I ventured over to a bench to sit down, in my memory, somewhat nearby. I was hobbling around with an ankle boot due to a foot injury, and there was a man sitting next to me who immediately inquired if I was OK. He proceeded to tell me his story of being in an adjacent building….the event, the aftermath. I listened intently, he again asked if I needed some help to get anywhere, and went back to work. I sat for a while, alone, under a bright and sunny sky. The surrounding noise, dissipated. Maybe only birdsong overhead.

It was either later that day or the next, I was sitting in a cafe in midtown, near to Matt’s apartment building, getting an afternoon coffee. At a table by the window, I began to silently cry, brought on by personal grief at the time, combined with the emotion of seeing downtown New York. (I still remember my parents taking John and I to Windows on the World, at the top of the World Trade Center—we were kids and visiting our New York relatives over the holidays. That dizzying feeling of such extreme heights, making one’s bodily gravity bend forward at an angle, I never quite forgot.)

A woman with her family, who I remember was visiting from Italy, walked over to me, put her hand on my shoulder, and said, don’t worry, you will heal from this. Here, personal and collective trauma met in space and time. The caring outreach from complete strangers felt new to me, but a poignant reminder, then and now, let’s (continue to) take care of one another.🕯️🙏🏾

💡Bonjour friends. A painting commenced last fall, and photographed this past April by Brad—it evolved while I was living and working in between two far flung locations, and absorbing the light and pollution of both. Now retitled, for a rhyming sound, it feels right.💡

Dear friends, and followers of @mondaysimage,

💡Today I have concluded my web blog, #mondaysimage, after a full 10-year cycle that ran from Monday, June 29, 2015 - Monday, June 29, 2026. The full loop of this time period took some time to reflect upon and encapsulate in writing.

Throughout the years, I learned a great deal about museum collections, discovered artists previously unknown to me, and had conversations with many people about the choices of artworks I made each Monday. Its goal: to utilize the vast depositories of museum collections by highlighting the work of artists lesser known to the general public. Many thanks for the sustained viewership, feedback, comments and exciting discussions we shared. I'm grateful for the ways in which Monday's image led me to parallel and collaborative projects, and the opportunities to bring a digital RSS feed into a 24-hour video projection, printed broadsheets and dye-sublimation prints. 2026 seems to be a year of new chapters for me, and I am mulling over new ideas in the months ahead that carry forward Monday's image’s spirit—what do I want to see in our wondrous field of art, what is missing, what can be discovered, what can be found(ed).

💡For those who would like to read the entire newsletter, I have included the link in my bio.💡

☀️ @liselot_studio came to visit! Former teaching colleagues and studio neighbors for years, we walked and talked, in between stopping to gaze at or photograph something, street life, and delicious museum visits—Beginning with inky pools in Neo Rauch prints @museumdereede, meeting Steven Humblet for a tour of Kelvin Haizel’s expo, spending time with Carrie Mae Weems’s film and photographs @fomuantwerp, and a pairing of Piero Manzoni and Guy Mees, to finish the afternoon. Being with dear friends…..🙏🏾💛
☀️Happy summer, all!☀️

🍃🍃 Happy birthday America, from across the pond, and with the people—on islands of stone, landing zones, steps up, steps down, hexagonal clusters under feet, the wind almost blowing one over, here….familial routes traversed and remembered—Hagåtña, Guam < > Galdo, Italy—belonging to an idea, 250 years thus far…..🍃🍃 taken in Antrim, Northern Ireland by @lisablas_studio
