Honored to be with my fellow sanlågu CHamorus to witness the official ceremonial return of ancestral human remains of four CHamoru “Matua” on their journey home to Guåhan from NYC . Saina Ma’ase @fran_aunty And grateful that they graced me and my camera as part of my ongoing visual documentary of CHamorus from the Marianas living overseas. I have taken over 1,700 portraits of our sanlågu CHamorus since I started the documentary in 2021. Getting close 😊to my goal to take a portrait of every one of the more than 180,000 CHamorus living away from the islands. @lisablas_studio Dawn - Spaces of Healing - Dusk : “Call it a chromatic choreography thought and performed far beyond the pacific wall: emerging from the Chamorro villages, it’s layered in between the West Coast’s explosion of light and the East Coast where Lisa Blas has dwelled for so long. This chromatic choreography lives on in northern Europe, again between other chromatic spaces, the Giverny green and the Flemish grey. In this sense, since art can’t do more than formulate requests, ideals and desires, every canvas is a periphery that desires to temporarily be a centre, to capture the gaze and define an interior … until it passes to the next. These are dialectical canvasses: they mediate between the peripheries of the world, the periphery of vision and a centre that is nothing more than a transitory working of attention, somewhere between the free play of imagination and memory. Where have I seen this before and where do I want to see it again, for how long and where am I going from here?

Lisa Blas’s Peripheries invites you to grasp the sense of place, history and identity as a series of visual hemispheres that delineate the transitions of life in terms of colourful planes.”

Critical Studies / Art & Culture I - taught by @lisablas_studio

From Impressionism to Surrealism and beyond, this course dives into the exhibitions, ideas, and cultural shifts that shaped Modernism (1860–1960) and asks how its legacy continues to shape you today.

Through readings, writing, films, discussions, and artist talks, students trace the evolution of modern art while sharpening their critical voice and grounding their studio practice in a larger historical timeline. 🧠✨

Whether you choose to extend or challenge modernism’s legacy, this class gives you the tools to understand your place within it and to build a strong foundation for your thesis and future work.

As you register for classes next Fall, consider stepping into history, rethinking the present, and shaping your trajectory as an artist with this class.

Friends are the spice of a great life!!!

In the hardest times, life sends you the people you didn’t know you needed.

During Covid, when the world stood still, I knocked on doors with a simple flyer inviting neighbors to come together. It was such a small gesture, but it turned into something none of us could have predicted.

We met outside first, just cheering for the healthcare heroes every Friday. Week after week, those few minutes became something to look forward to — a moment of connection in the quiet. Then slowly, we added masked happy hours, doorstep chats, shared worries, shared laughter… and eventually our very first Friendsgiving.

Fast-forward five years, and what started as strangers in a hallway has become a wonderful group of friends.
We have held each other through milestones, a wedding , moves, new jobs, new dreams — and through all of it, we’ve stayed connected.

Every get-together feels like a celebration of how far we’ve come and how lucky we are to have found each other in the middle of a crisis.

Here’s to more sunsets, more memories, more Friendsgivings… and to the family we chose. 🧡🍂

🔹Rentrée! 🔹After a summer of quiet and being more offline than online, the beautiful autumn light and season is upon us. Teaching has begun at @newyorkacademyofart and I will be working as a mentor again this semester, with the @nyartsprogram. Each day this week, I will post on each letter of the word, 🔹Rentrée🔹—operating like a note to self, reminders, to-do lists, as accompanied with images of where I’ve been these past few months. Excited to reconvene with you all very soon!🔹

💡R: REFLECTION.💡A space and block of time needed to think and process response. Algorithms feed on Reaction—Art exists within gray areas, nuance and interstices of reflection, as does humanity.💡
