Today so many of us are remembering where we were on 9/11. And it was such a profound and shocking moment, that it's easy to forget everything that happened after - including Canada's own long war, when we fight alongside our allies in Afghanistan. I had the privilege this past year of working on The Long War: Canada in Afghanistan, hosted by Anna Maria Tremonti and produced with Neil Morrison and the superb folks at the Canadian War Museum, along with the brave veterans and Afghans who agreed to speak with us. It was expertly supported by Hailey Choi and Cameron McIver.

This one's also a bit of a reunion — Anna Maria, Neil and I worked together for years at CBC's The Current. We covered stories out of Afghanistan as they unfolded in real time. So putting this together with them 25 years later has been a moving, full-circle moment.

It's out today, the first of 8 episodes, releasing weekly, wherever you get your podcasts. Episode one is live. link in bio. by @lisagabrieletv

So good. So sad. So good. Told from a war dog's perspective--from confused puppy, recruited by a female soldier for a nameless war, to skilled killing machine doggo who pines for home, for a time when the world wasnt a wretched post-war husk. Written in a chillingly straightforward manner, this is a chronicle of humanity at its worst--a brutal, compelling read that ends on a tiny bead of hope. (I so wanted to hug this pupper 🥹😩) Find your pack, people! That's the most important thing we can do. by @lisagabrieletv

The light is fading, and appropriately I did not switch on a lamp as I (finally, FINALLY) finished this book. By now you must know what it's about. Not going to help you there. What I will tell you is that it's baggy, uneven, infuriating, eye-rollingly ballsy, weird, brave and so original. I felt a LOT of things reading this book, testament to the talents of an author who really went for it and mostly suceeded. I will be thinking about and talking about Yesteryear for a long time. Brava Caro. by @lisagabrieletv

Kids lie. But this 19-year old Brit, Zac Brettler, made up a secret life for himself, unbeknownst to his loving parents. Sometimes he told people his dad was an arms dealer, sometimes his mother was dead, often he claimed to be the son of a Russian oligarch. That lie gave him entré into London's underbelly, filled with other phonies and gangsters. Why is he such a fabulist? Personality disorder? Instagram? To impress rich girls at his new private school? Boredom? All of the above? He dies in the first pages, but this book is about his weird, short life, how he got tangled up in so much darkness, and when he realized he was up to his neck in danger, he couldn't escape. What a wild ride, and what incredible access. I think that's what makes this book utterly remarkable, how close the author gets to the very centre of this story. Zac's parents bared their souls and their own family histories (with uncanny parallels and recurring themes). And so do some of the criminals wrapped up in this heartbreaking story. A propulsion, immersive, and shocking read that's also just real solid journalism. I started by reading the book, but downloaded the audiobook so I could continue while I made some mugs. That's how good it is. 3/3 this summer. Whistler is next! (Also gimme the Cusk novel if anyone reading this has it in their power!) by @lisagabrieletv

Wasn't even looking for a moving Italian romp. Actually picked this book up by accident midway through my Lesteryear trudge. Then bam, I look up, and I'm halfway through. Have you ever taken a far flung job, and stumbled into a tight, weird cluster of (mostly, maybe?) monied eccentrics of various ages
and ethnicities, helmed by the most unforgettable (non-cartoony) baroness, and wound up sleeping with one of her married relatives, while learning the most useless of skills, always uncertain whether you should be busting out laughing, or actually crying, while embarking on frustrating side quests designed to distract you from what you were there to do to begin with, all under a Tuscan sun dappling a faded villa where a little feral beast spooks the shit out of you on the regular? What if I told you it was still a deeply comforting, engaging and relaxing read? It just zips by. But it also stops you in its tracks with such beautifully precise language that I kept rereading passages to sear them into my brain. I loved "Less". I love this book more. I haven't finished; I slowed down to savour. Will probably "DNF" Chesteryear. Because once you tried the puntarelle spiked with achovy and garlic, it's hard to go back to the store bought stuff, ya know? #villacoco by @lisagabrieletv
