ഉച്ചമയക്കത്തിൽ ഞാനൊരു സ്വപ്നം കണ്ടു. കവുങ്ങുകളിലൂടെ സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു പറ്റം മനുഷ്യർ. അവരെ കുറിച്ച് അധികം സംസാരിക്കാൻ പാടില്ലത്രേ.
അവർ ആരാണെന്നോ അവരെ ചുറ്റി പറ്റി ഒരു ഭയഭക്തി നിലനിൽക്കുന്നത് എന്തിനാണെന്നോ എനിക്കെത്ര ശ്രമിച്ചിട്ടും ഓർത്തെടുക്കാൻ പറ്റിയില്ല.
ഓർമ ഉള്ളത്- അവരുടെ നീക്കുപോക്ക് ഉണ്ടായത് കാരണം, ഉമ്മ തയ്യാറാക്കിയ പലഹാരത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ഒരു കഷ്ണം ചുരണ്ടിയെടുത്ത് ജനലിലൂടെ പുറത്തേക്ക് കളയുന്നതാണ്.
എനിക്ക് മുഴുവൻ കഴിക്കാൻ കിട്ടാഞ്ഞതിൽ വിഷമം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു, പക്ഷേ ചോദിക്കാൻ പേടി തോന്നി.

കവുങ്ങുകളെ പോലെ നീണ്ടു മെലിഞ്ഞ മനുഷ്യർ.

I had a dream during an afternoon nap. A group of people moving through the arecanut trees. It seems we’re not supposed to talk much about them.
No matter how hard I try, I can’t remember who they are or why there’s a sense of fear and reverence surrounding them.

What I do remember is this - because they were passing by, Umma scraped off a piece from the snack she had prepared and threw it out through the window.
I felt upset that I couldn’t eat it all, but I was too scared to ask.

*കാക്കക്കൊല്ലിത്താത്ത*

ഈയിടെ വെറുതെ ഇരുന്ന് സമയം പോക്കുമ്പോൾ ഞാൻ കാക്കക്കൊല്ലിത്താത്തയെ കുറിച്ചാലോചിച്ചു.
മുറ്റത്ത് ഉണക്കാനിട്ട അരിയുടെ പുറത്ത് ഏതോ ഒരു കാക്ക കാഷ്ഠിച്ചതിൻ്റെ പേരിലാണ് താത്തയ്ക്ക് കാക്കകളോട് വൈരാഗ്യം തുടങ്ങുന്നത്. പിന്നെപ്പിന്നെ ആൾ അരിഭക്ഷണം പൂർണമായും ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് കാക്കകളെ കൊന്നു തിന്നാണ് ജീവിച്ചിരുന്നത് എന്നാണ് കുട്ടിക്കാലത്ത് ഞങ്ങൾ കേട്ടിരുന്നത്.
അങ്ങനെയിരിക്കെ ഒരു നട്ടുച്ച നേരത്ത് സ്ഥലത്തെ അവശേഷിച്ച കാക്കകളെല്ലാം സംഘടിച്ച് കാക്കക്കൊല്ലിതാത്തയുടെ വീടിനു നേരെ ഒരാക്രമണം നടത്തി. അതിനു ശേഷം ആൾ നാട് വിട്ടു. കാക്കകൾ അവരുടെ വീട് കയ്യേറി.
അവരെന്നെങ്കിലും ആ പ്രതികാരത്തിൻ്റെ കഥ തുടരാൻ തിരിച്ചെത്തുമെന്ന് ഞങ്ങൾ വിചാരിച്ചു കാത്തിരുന്നു.
കാക്കകളും കുറേ കാത്തിരുന്നു കാണണം.

ഇപ്പഴും ആ വീട് നിറച്ചും കാക്കകളാണ്.

The cactus residents were a bit more hard working in nature than the apple tenant. They had wooden rope ladders to access the multi-storied cactus structures. They had tied ropes from one thorn to the next to dry out their small clothes. I even saw a semi closed swimming pool which was filled with the cactus gel.
