Author of OTHER PEOPLE'S WORDS: FRIENDSHIP, LOSS, AND THE CONVERSATIONS THAT NEVER END.

POSTS STORIES REELS

“When Nicole R. Fleetwood took up swimming as a child, she went without goggles and ‘saw it all.’ The same can be said of how she navigates the streets of the Second Ward, and how she crafts every sentence of this breathtaking book. Fleetwood maps the world around her and the contours of her own growing mind. She notices boundaries, takes care, feels love, hears music. And she is always — always — asking questions. Is he laughing or crying? What is she thinking? Who did this? Out of her study of detail, Fleetwood cultivates a remarkable vision that guides her, and her readers, through shattering events in her family, her community, and her country. She establishes that the people of Hamilton, Ohio are known for making stuff: paper, appliances, locks. What Fleetwood has made here is a new literary classic. It will change you. May it also change America.”
Lissa Soep, author of Other People’s Words

Thank you for reading every draft and for your unwavering love and support, @lissasoep. One of the greatest blessings of this life is writing and growing alongside you. by @lissasoep

Psyched to share another panel I'll be on at #AWP26. It's really hard to self-promote, share glamorous images, celebrate collaborations when so much incoming news is horrific. When people I grew up with––refugees and immigrants––are pushed into deeper and deeper states of precarity. When I post here I try to remember the advice of my teachers @lidiamiles and @corporealwriting: make art in the face of fuck.

This panel: It is visionary!!! It is the future. And I know because I got to work closely with 2 of these panelists. I'll be talking about the amazing collaboration I did with @lissasoep and Sharif Youssef on the supercool MacArthur Foundation-funded Bonus Chapter (link in my link.tree and below) where they created a beautifully sound-designed version of the 5th chapter from my memoir, "Oprah Winfrey Feminism," the critical theory I grew up with, starting this journey of starting to question the redemptive narratives we are fed to silence the marginalized within families and nations. We'll be joined by brilliant literary figures working across media, taking words off the page, including @shawnoffandon as well as DJ Johnson of @baldwinandcompany. I cannot wait for this conversation! This is a group of visionaries!!! 🩵💙

This was really meaningful. @thedougycenter does the vital work of supporting families in grief. For the podcast, Jana opened a series of conversations on how we experience and support one another through the loss of friends. Loved joining this dialogue 🧡 link in bio 🧡 by @lissasoep

Longform episode dropped (link in bio)!

I’ve been working on Other People’s Words for more than eight years. Many times, I got lost. At one of those low points, I heard an unforgettable Longform interview with Elif Batuman that got me going again. Maybe it wasn’t impossible, I realized, to tell an intimate story of friendship as a great love with a throughline of Russian philosophy revealing the power of language in the face of loss.

A million thanks to Evan Ratliff and the Longform team, for cultivating conversations that help writers keep at it and that connect us to others whose stories can show us the way 🧡💚🧡💚 by @lissasoep

Please join a conversation about OTHER PEOPLE’S WORDS with my spectacular friend @nifleetwood tomorrow, 3pm @momaps1 (reg link in bio)!! by @lissasoep
