A lil #MSWL but make it ✨ book vibes ✨

Thought I’d make a little visual moodboard of books I’ve enjoyed lately or whose themes, storytelling, and/or writing resonate with me. If your querying novel sits alongside any of these books, I want to see it!

First slide: Weird Girl Lit(TM) and horror.
Second slide: Fantasy, sci-fi, and speculative fiction. by @literary.fey

QM update: formalising things a little with an updated graphic. Same info as before: I am open to queries for the first seven days (1-7) of every calendar month.

I am, however, implementing a new tier: I am now open *permanently and year-round* to BIPOC authors and creators from the global majority, in the hopes of improving accessibility. More information is available on my QM page.

IMPORTANTLY: I aim to respond to ALL queries. If you have not received a response, your query is still under consideration. Thank you for your patience!

I look forward to reading all your fantastic stories ✨ by @literary.fey

I’m delighted to be finally sharing the news that I have recently been promoted at Bell Lomax Moreton — granting me both an expanded remit in terms of the projects I’m signing and developing, but also deeper responsibilities within the agency structure itself.

It has been a profound privilege to get to work across my clients’ books thus far and I am so excited for what this new chapter will spell! I very much anticipate that I will continue to grow my list at the slow and intentional pace I’ve set thus far (wanting to be a real champion for every book I sign, and wanting to ensure the same level of author care and attention for all my clients — something I consider a foundational cornerstone of my work as an agent). My clients are at the heart of everything I do, and I count myself forever lucky to get to work with the kindest, coolest, most talented authors in the biz.

Thank you all for your continued trust in me.
Editors, let’s chat! 😉 by @literary.fey

This is the city of miracles, but not everything miraculous is good...

Cate Baumer ( @cate_baumer )’s Sunday Times bestselling gothic fantasy mystery, THE FAITHFUL DARK, is out today in paperback from Hodderscape. Congratulations, Cate!

If “Bloodborne meets the Vatican” sounds like your kinda sh!t, I hope you’ll pick up a copy 🪽

—

“A twisty and beguiling gothic fantasy, lyrically written and tightly plotted, with a compelling cast of characters and one of my favourite villain-slash-anti-heroes of all time. You will be entranced by Baumer’s darkly magical tale.” ― Ava Reid, #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Study in Drowning

“Baumer has quickly become one of my favorite authors. Intricate, exquisitely macabre, and completely unforgettable, The Faithful Dark pulls no punches and begs to be read in one sitting.” ― Allison Saft, #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Dark and Drowning Tide

In a holy walled city where sin and sanctity are revealed through touch, Csilla - a girl born without a soul - is worth little to the Church that raised her. But when a series of murders corrodes the faithful magic that keep the city safe, the Church elders see a use for her flaw: she can assassinate their prime suspect, a heretic with divine heritage, without risking the stain of sin.

The heretic, however, makes Csilla a counteroffer: clear his name by helping him catch the real killer, and he’ll use his angelic gifts to grant her very own soul. Meanwhile, ruthless Ilan, desperate to earn back his position as Church Inquisitor, sees the case as his chance at redemption: he’ll bring in the murderer - or, failing that, Csilla and the heretic - and regain his title.

But as the death toll rises, and their hunt pits them against the all-powerful and callous Faith, Csilla finds herself torn. Will her salvation come at the cost of everything she believes in?

Angels. Demons. Serial killers in a holy city. A deadly mystery that will have you hooked. The Faithful Dark is perfect for fans of Ava Reid, Rachel Gillig and Heba Al-Wasity. by @literary.fey

A sharply satirical queer folk horror novel that peels back the idyllic veneer of a seemingly perfect island town to reveal the rot beneath, from Bram Stoker and Shirley Jackson Award-nominated author Bitter Karella.

QUAINT FOLK by Bitter Karella ( @bitterkarella ) is out today from Orbit Books. Congratulations, BK! I am so excited for the world to wander into Hasenhurst...

Happy Tigglestide!

“The folk horror I always wanted: queer, funny, bloody, and outrageous in the best way.” ― Laura Cranehill, author of Wife Shaped Bodies

“To experience Karella’s cheerfully unhinged fiction is to surrender to a spectacularly fierce and uncompromising literary force. Quaint Folk astonished me with its charming, mythical weirdness threaded with genuine moments of pure tenderness. A bold, potent brew of all the best elements of folk and queer horror.” ― Eric LaRocca, author of Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke

From the outside, it looks like Jessica has the perfect life. She’s a stay-at-home mom, married to a man with a respectable job, raising a son they adore. Her family is as wholesome as all-American pie. But deep down, Jessica knows there’s something wrong with her; she knows she can’t escape her past.

When her husband’s job has them move abroad, Jessica thinks this is her chance for a fresh start. On the remote island of Hasenhurst, the modern world can’t get in. The people there grow their own herbs, make their own jam, and mind their own business. They believe in folk tales and the power of dreams. They tell visitors, we’re a quaint, quiet people. The right sort of family would do well here.

Jessica is determined to be the right kind of person for a family―and a life―like this. But as she tries to befriend the townsfolk and learn their ways, she soon realizes that beneath the town’s cozy idyll, something sickly-sweet and rotten lays buried ... by @literary.fey

Dear Oxford,

A decade ago I walked your cobbled streets and dreamt of books. Today I wake up rosy-eyed and they are my reality. What a gift you’ve been – from ten years ago at the inaugural @columbiapubcrse through to today, in my beloved work at @belllomaxmoreton. I count myself eternally grateful to do something I love so much for a living. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

To the new cohort of students,

Good luck! I can’t wait to see you all shake up the world. Publishing needs it, and you. by @literary.fey

People did not expect such a thing, from a woman or a fawn; we were both meant to be prey.

And another one! FAWN by C.N. Vair ( @cnvair ) is out today from 3 AM Books (Transworld). Congratulations, C.N.! I am beyond proud of you and this wonderful book.

(For any confused observers: same book, two territories, two publishers, two titles!)

—

In the hills of Appalachia, Tess Wynne lives in precious quiet. She tends her wildlife sanctuary, honours old rituals and survives what comes for her each year.

Then she finds a doe split open. And the fawn who survived. Red-mouthed. Full set of teeth. Hungry.

Nature knows what must be done. The town watches to see if Tess will do it.

She does not.

Whispers spread. Old bargains strain. Something primal stirs within Tess—anger, appetite, the slow understanding that prey is only prey for so long.

A dark and tender story, Fawn asks what a woman must become to keep what is hers—and what the land demands in return. by @literary.fey

The devil was as my mother and grandmother had always described him: polite enough that you might forget yourself, so beautiful that you’d want to, so dangerous if you did.

THE DEVIL KNOWS HER NAME by C.N. Vair ( @cnvair ) is out today from Berkley (US). Congratulations, C.N.!

—

A hundred years ago, a witch sold her soul to save her life—but now she must stop the devil from collecting his due in this gripping and nuanced debut horror novel.

Attacked by the man she desired and at the brink of death, Tess Wynne vowed she would do anything to live—and the devil heard her. Their bargain meant she would remain ageless and tethered to the land she nearly died on, at the edge of the isolated Appalachian town of Burrsville. Her home is now a wildlife sanctuary, and the spells she’s woven keep the land and community safe.

But then Tess rescues an orphaned fawn with unnatural appetites, and her instinct to protect this strange creature puts her at odds with Burrsville’s residents. And when a new pastor comes to town and begins chipping away at the trust she’s gained, threatening the sanctuary and its animals, the careful edges of Tess’s world begin to fray.

The devil whispers in her ear that he can save the sanctuary if she’ll just pay his price, and Tess must decide if she’ll trust in her own magic to save what she loves—or surrender to his will. by @literary.fey
