ENC Ambassador Spotlight | The Stories Behind Our Culinary Scene

Eastern North Carolina’s culinary scene is about more than what’s on the plate. It’s about the people, passion, and stories that make our region unique.

Luke, Äna, Jamie, and Matt joined us for a panel at the NC Rural Economic Summit, hosted by ECU and Business NC, sharing their experiences and perspectives on the food, culture, and communities that make ENC special.

Their stories are helping shape how our region is seen and experienced, connecting more people to the places and possibilities that make Eastern NC home.

We’re proud to celebrate these ambassadors and the stories they continue to share. by @livingenc

“I have always loved water. Just something about being in control of where I’m going. Every time you paddle out, you see something different and it doesn’t matter if you paddle in the same place, there is just something new to see and appreciate,” said ShavonNe Brumsey

For some, the water is an escape. For others, it’s a way to connect people to the place they call home. And sometimes, a paddle is all it takes to see a familiar place in a whole new way.

For Robert Daniel, Eastern North Carolina has always been part of the story. He grew up in Wilson, explored life beyond the region, and eventually found his way back, this time to Edenton.

After a career in law, Robert found a new path in land use and planning. But it was the combination of community and the outdoors that made Eastern North Carolina feel like home.

From fly fishing and kayaking to exploring rivers, sounds, and coastal waters, Robert has found a place where the outdoors isn’t something you have to travel to find, it’s part of everyday life.

For Robert, choosing Eastern North Carolina meant finding a community he could invest in and a lifestyle that keeps him connected to the places he loves.

ENC Ambassador Spotlight: Captain Will Paul

He is as native as the sycamores that nod over the rivers, as local as a redeye bass. Captain Will Paul was born in Greenville, raised on the rivers that wind through the Coastal Plain, and early on was inspired to share the grandeur of a quiet Eastern North Carolina stream.

Quiet, that is, until a fly-hooked striped bass or hickory shad breaks the surface of the water and tail-walks across the stream, and the angler in Captain Paul’s boat lets out a whoop of glee that echoes down the river.

Owner of the Rocky Mount-based Tar River Co., Capt. Paul spends a few months each year guiding at the famed Tikchik Narrows Lodge of Alaska. It’s a stunning location. The salmon are strong and wild. But not so strong and wild as to make him forget the waters of home, the languid creeks that corkscrew under soaring oak and cypress. Get hooked on Eastern North Carolina, and you’ll always find the road home. by @livingenc

"I look at shaping a board as an art. It's a dance all the way down to the footwork. It's too important for it not to exist."

There's more to a surfboard than the waves it rides. For Zach Smith, it's about the movement, the process, and keeping the art of shaping alive.

There’s a certain magic in a board shaped by hand.

For Zach Smith, shaper, designer, and owner of Smith Surfboards, shaping isn’t just a craft, it’s an art. Every curve, every detail, and every board reflects his connection to surfing and the water.

From a Cold War-era bomb shelter in his backyard, Zach spends hours shaping boards by hand, only stepping into the shaping room when he’s in the right mindset to bring one to life.

What does that process look like? Why does the energy behind the shaper matter? And what makes a hand-shaped board so special? Step inside Zach’s shaping room and see how a piece of Eastern North Carolina surf culture comes to life.

Dear ENC,

You make slowing down feel easy.

You’re made up of the kind of people who make it special.

You always give us a reason to stay for dinner.

You remind us that the best places don’t have to be the biggest.

You make it pretty easy to spend the day outside.

You know the beauty of a slow morning.

And, you always feel like home🫶🏻 by @livingenc
