NC East Alliance was proud to sponsor and present at the NC Rural Economic Summit, hosted by Business NC and East Carolina University, bringing our team’s perspectives to conversations shaping the future of Eastern North Carolina.

Trey Goodson led a discussion on the opportunities within our region’s maritime industry, while Lauren Raynor led a panel highlighting the culinary talent, stories, and people that make Eastern North Carolina unique.

We’re proud to help lead these conversations, share the stories that make our region unique, and build momentum for continued growth across Eastern North Carolina!

Some inherit land. Along the North Carolina coast, families inherit the water. Boats, stories, knowledge, sacrifice, and a way of life are passed from one generation to the next with no guarantee that another will follow. The Legacy is about what remains when fishing becomes part of a family’s identity, and what it means to carry something forward when you know your generation could be the last.

Every plate of local seafood begins somewhere offshore. Behind it are boats leaving in the dark, long hours on open water, uncertain weather, changing seasons, and a way of working that most people will never see. The Catch follows the journey between sea and shore, revealing the people, knowledge, and risk behind the seafood that has sustained North Carolina’s coastal communities for generations.

Before the docks come alive and before the catch ever reaches the table, there is the fisherman. Along North Carolina’s coast, the work begins before dawn, carried out by people who have learned the water from the generations before them. The Fisherman is a portrait of the men who choose this life, not because it is easy, but because somewhere along the way, fishing became more than what they do. It became who they are.

We enjoyed the opportunity to exhibit, connect with HR professionals from across North Carolina, and share more about the work of NC East Alliance.

Dear Hospitality No. 006
•
Last week, we asked you what conversation you wanted Dear Hospitality to have next. This is the one you chose.
•
Spaces with a point of view.

Around the same time, I read a recent @bonappetitmag piece questioning some of the ideas that have grown out of our industry’s obsession with constantly exceeding expectations. It got me thinking about the other side of that conversation.
•
What if the restaurant itself is part of what the guest is coming to experience? The restaurants I remember most aren’t usually the ones that tried to have something for everyone. They’re the ones where someone clearly made choices. The food. The room. The music. The service. The sense of place. You may not love every decision, but you know what that restaurant believes in. I think we’re seeing more restaurants become comfortable with that kind of specificity.
•
At Native, we’re still figuring it out ourselves. The more we’ve stopped asking what a restaurant in Greenville is supposed to look like and started trusting the things that shaped us, Eastern North Carolina, the people we’ve learned from, the places we’ve eaten, and the techniques we love, the clearer the restaurant has become.
•
Having a point of view isn’t about caring less for the guest. To me, it’s about believing that the restaurant’s identity matters too. The goal isn’t to build a restaurant everyone likes. It’s to build one that means something to people.
•
Are restaurants getting better at having a point of view? And which restaurants do you think are doing it really well?
•
This week’s conversation was partly sparked by Adam Reiner’s @dopereiner recent piece for Bon Appétit.
