camp discovery 2026 || year 13 ✔️

thank you Jesus! Year after year, I am given the opportunity to give back to my community and watch kids grow and thrive at camp. This community is my rock and has shaped my life in an indescribable way. I can proudly say that camp discovery helped make me who I am today. I love you all and cannot wait to see you guys next year.

To those who don’t know:

Camp Discovery is a camp for kids who have or had cancer and can act as a safe haven for kids who have not been given a “normal” childhood. We have around an average of 120 campers from mainly south central Texas & we spend 7 days in Kerrville all together and us volunteers make camp magical for them. 75% of the volunteers at camp are pediatric cancer survivors themselves, myself included. I am blessed to be apart of this organization and wouldn’t change it for the world!!!

It’s been almost three weeks since I left, and I still haven’t even been able to look at the pics from the trip. I just have so much to be thankful for… I honestly feel like the luckiest person in the world.

Meeting you, Liya, back in 2022, when I was 15 and totally lost, alone in the US, was the best thing that could’ve ever happened to me. The biggest chance of my life. You didn’t know me at all (neither you nor your family). And when I say not at all, I mean literally; you just sat down at the same table as me one random morning during a break and started talking to me. When you realized I was an exchange student, you got curious, wanted to know my story… because barely anyone really understands or even wants to hear what it’s like to live a whole year alone on another continent. But you listened. You listened so much that you guys opened the doors of your home to me, otherwise I would’ve had to go back to Spain with four months still left. From that moment on, I knew I was in good hands.

Three years later, coming back to visit you guys made me the happiest girl ever. You gave me more than you even had to give. I have nothing but gratitude. You planned a million things so my trip would be unforgettable.

Thank you for even knowing how to listen to my silence. For always including me. For taking care of me. For being my older sister. For making me happy. For listening to Party in the USA with me like 40 times a day, even though you were sick of it. For playing songs I liked when I got quiet in the car. For all those Chick-fil-A. For making me feel like I had another home in Texas. For opening the doors of our home. For making me part of the family. For scrapbooking. For taking me to different places when I couldn’t eat because everything had dairy.
And thank you, above all, for the friendship we built.

Even though I had to leave earlier than expected, you made sure every single minute was just as special and amazing. I’ll say it as many times as I need to: I’m so grateful I met you and your family.

I can say it out loud: blood sisters aren’t the only kind of sisters, because you, you are my sister.
