LECTURE: Abbott Pattison: THE FIGURE FORWARD
Thursday, November 12, 6:30-8:30pm

Join us for a lively evening of learning and conversation with EAM’s Manager of Exhibitions & Collections, Liz Chilsen, curator of our current McCormick House exhibition Abbott Pattison: The Figure Forward.

Pattison was a prominent figure in mid-century modernist sculpture, with over 30 large-scale artworks commissioned and installed throughout the area. He was born in Chicago where he lived and spent most of his career. The Museum holds 15 of his artworks.

Pattison’s unique blend of representation and abstraction found significant expression in the human form. The exhibition, drawn from the Museum’s permanent collection, showcases the breadth of Pattison’s expression, from classical figuration to bold, textured abstraction, with works in cast and carved bronze, carved stone, and drawing, dating from 1960 to 1980.

Liz will share her recent research and lead a conversation about this prominent mid-century modernist Chicago Sculptor.

@dawnkramlich ART 320 (Intermediate Painting and Drawing) course had the privilege of getting a private tour of the Elmhurst Art Museum’s “Living with Modernism” exhibition of @kelli_connell work from the Manager of Exhibitions, @lizchilsen.

During the tour, students were asked to think about which aspects of Connell’s conceptual approach struck them the most; their assignment was then to make a work based on one of those conceptual threads.

Whether contemplating the parallel between the body-as-landscape / landscape-as-body, the idea of how we project ourselves onto situations with others, or how gender may impact one’s perception of situations, these students rose to the assignment’s challenge.

This was a meaningful way for the Elmhurst Art Museum to support student creativity. Dawn’s assignment gave students the chance to find their own inspiration for their artwork and to learn more about how an artist develops a creative project over many years.

The collaboration also highlighted the value of the Museum’s partnerships with Elmhurst University; we were happy to support and contribute to this learning experience. We look forward to continuing to work with students and faculty to create further connections between the classroom and the exhibitions. 🩷
