I finally had a chance to write about the month I spent living in Benarraba, Spain with @rooral.co for @cntraveler

@rooral.co brings digital nomads to this tiny village in Andalusia for a co-living and -working program built on community. Digital nomad can be a dirty word, at times rightfully so, but founder Juan Barbed puts locals at the forefront of every decision so the program can actually inject new energy, creativity, and money into a place that most of Spain has written off. Pueblos like this are considered at risk of total depopulation as young people relocate to cities, but that concern couldn’t feel further away in this vibrant, welcoming community that I’m so grateful to have been apart of—even if only for a little while.

I spent so many hours sitting on this patio: Drinking coffee and listening to the church bells. Eating dinner cooked by new friends from around the world. Chatting (or attempting to chat in my shaky Spanish) with neighbors on their way to the bar.

Said bar had paella on Sundays and people from neighboring villages rode horses over for the occasion which always made me smile

One of the neighbors had an orange grove that was bursting so I also made a lot of orange juice, orange cake, and orange syrup for old fashioneds

I mean… just dreamy

One of the best part was Yolanda’s fish van, which drove in from the coast of Malaga a few times a week with the freshest seafood, beeping along the way to draw locals from their homes to shop

I found so much about the pueblo so beautiful, especially the simplicity and stability of the homes that feel carved into the mountainside

And it was so special to witness all of the area’s traditions like this romería with dancing and competitions on horseback

But, of course, for me, time spent sitting around the table or collaborating in the kitchen (like here when I served as sous chef to @catlauhealing) was most meaningful
