ā€œThere is one thing I can do for them: it is to win, and to keep winning until I obtain my dream.ā€

Griffith, The White Hawk

My gosh this statue is so pretty. Beyond happy, beyond impressed. Detail is insane. Will 100% do more shoots with these guys once they’re up and displayed, hopefully soon after the move. Also giving me insanely greedy eyes for more P1 statues lol. As Griffith said, ā€œA dream is something you must do for yourself, never for others.ā€ #berserk āš”ļø#figurefriday by @lksreads

Amazing Spider-Man 122: The Goblin’s Last Stand #singleissuesaturday šŸ•·ļø

Gwen Stacy lays limp in the arms of Spider-Man, dead at the hands of the Green Goblin! The wall crawler promises death to the foe who has taken the life of the innocent girlfriend of Peter Parker!

This issue has been on my personal grail list since I started collecting comics some almost two decades ago now and finally found a solid copy at a great value at @ultimatecomicsofficial 🄹 went in to pick up Chainsaw Man 22 and walked out with a book off the key issue wall šŸ˜‚

I just gushed over this arc and Spider-Man: Blue a few weeks ago so I’ll save the long-winded review, but I tell ya what: as far as single issues go, this is an all-time favorite of mine. Giddy to have added this one to the collection and immediately finding a spot to display it. šŸ–¤šŸ•øļø by @lksreads

The History of the Church - Eusebius

Bishop Eusebius, a learned scholar who lived most of his life in Caesarea in Palestine, broke new ground in writing the history of the early church and provided a model for all later ecclesiastical historians. In tracing the history of the Church from the time of Christ to the Great Persecution at the beginning of the fourth century, and ending with the conversion of the Emperor Constantine, his aim was to show the purity and continuity of the doctrinal tradition of Christianity and its struggle against persecutors and heretics. Eusebius’s account is the only surviving historical record of the Church during its crucial first 300 years.

Christianity triumphs again. The more history you read, the more compelling the evidence is.

This is a fantastic timepiece. Something that stands out is how ā€œaheadā€ of his time Eusebius was; frequently citing extra-biblical sources and recorded eyewitness testimony. There’s an academic rigor in this account that would make it hold up by even today’s standards. Coolest part is that probably most of the sources that Eusebius mentions are extant, either through preservation or later archeological discovery, lending reliability to the work overall.

Modern criticisms of the work are that Eusebius colors some sections of this work with a personal palette, which is indeed a valid criticism but a bit unfair. As a reader, and maybe more as a Christian, I did enjoy his interpretation of certain eras/events/persons. As much as this work is an account of history, it is also Eusebius’ personal account and eyewitness testimony of the time period in which he lived.

It’s a fairly complete picture of the times. Eusebius wades through the church rites and establishment of its hierarchy and administrative roles, apostolic succession, governing and political divisions, and what I found most compelling was the account of martyrdom. I’ve read some repugnant historical literature and this stands out as one of the more gruesome accounts, even with Eusebius’ censorship. In light of the depravity, there rings a biblical truth: the seeds of the church are watered with the blood of the martyrs.

Fascinating read. by @lksreads

The Witcher: Fox Children

Geralt’s journey leads him aboard a ship of fools, renegades, and criminals- - but some passengers are more dangerous than others, and one hides a heinous secret that could lead crew and passengers to a bitter and hideous fate at the hand of a vengeful fox mother!

Unlike the direct adaptation one-shots, Fox Children is an extended retelling of the Vulpess storyline in the ā€œSeason of Stormsā€ novel. In the novel, I loved the Vulpess story; Vulpesses, or also called Aguara’s, are conceptually very cool. Geralt’s fear of them makes them feel larger than life, and their mysterious abilities and life cycles feel very folktale. They’re a wonderful addition to the Witcher mythos and this story is no exception.

The Vulpess’ illusory magic lends to an oppressive horror tone. Even as the reader, you’re not sure what’s real and what isn’t, and it makes for really fun reading. Never knowing what’s next and some crafty paneling breathes life into this freaky story, without losing wit and humor. Biggest gripe is ugly faces, otherwise pencils are solid and those earthy colors and tones are great at creating an unsettling scene. by @lksreads

X-Men Icons: Rogue

After running away from home, Rogue thought she found a new family with the X-Men. Still unable to fit in, she flees once again. Will her journey of self-discovery lead to her acceptance by the X-Men?

The Icons series were written specifically to highlight character work more than action/adventure plots, so if you want a good ol’ beatdown the badguys story, skip the Icons. A much slower burn, this tale puts a new spin UXM 171 and then takes Rogue around the country in 4 issues, running into the same problems borne of her mutant powers.

The focus on Rogue’s internal struggle with her inability to externally connect to people is solid enough. There was a little romance shoehorned, but I like that it wasn’t the focus, as it always seems to be with Rogue. The storytelling is a bit odd though - she saves a shepherd from some angry truckers, helps a dying bomb squad tech, and visits the Grand Canyon with Scott. The heartbeat of Rogue coming to terms with her lot in life holds everything together, but the plot is all over the place.

Average read, no notes. Covers are nice. by @lksreads

On the Genealogy of Morals: A Polemic - Friedrich Nietzsche

Published in 1887, a year after Beyond Good and Evil, Nietzsche intended Genealogy of Morals to be a continuation of the investigation into the theme of morality. In the first work, Nietzsche attacked the notion of morality as nothing more than institutionalized weakness - in this series of essays subtitled ā€œA Polemicā€, Nietzsche continues to challenge the ā€œvalues of valuation,ā€ and instead champions the ā€œtransvaluation of valuations.ā€ He looks at the way attitudes towards ā€˜morality’ evolved and the way congenital ideas of morality were heavily colored by the Judeo-Christian traditions. Nietzsche rewrites the former as a history of cruelty, exposing the central values of the Judaeo-Christian and liberal traditions - compassion, equality, justice - as the product of a brutal process of conditioning designed to domesticate the animal vitality of earlier cultures.

ā€œAll the ā€˜Thou shalt’s’ known to history and ethnology need primarily a physiological - at any rate in preference to a psychological - elucidation and interpretation. All equally require a critique from medical science. The question, ā€˜what is the value of this or that table of values or morality?’ needs to be asked.

Nietzsche is competing with Camus for my favorite atheists of all time. Though Camus is interpreted much less nihilistically, Nietzsche’s influence on Camus is so evident. This book raises profoundly disquieting issues about the ā€œviolenceā€of ethics, questioning moral certainties by showing that religion and science have no claim to absolute truth. By providing a genealogy of morals - tracing back historically what has been considered good and evil, noble and ignoble, beautiful and ugly - Nietzsche makes a strong point against man’s ability to declare what is and is not ā€œmoral.ā€

Tracking European history, Nietzsche looks at the shift in morality over some 2000 years. Take for example, the guillotine - once a symbol of righteousness, and now a relic of barbarism. Capital punishment was once considered the foremost tool of justice, and now has been fragilely renamed as ā€œtorture.ā€ Roman culture believed that aristocracy could be t by @lksreads

I know it was just #figurefriday but I’m too happy with my first custom paint to wait to post him šŸ˜šŸ™

Definitely rough around the edges, didn’t really follow any specific example or consistent shading/anatomical structure, also forgot a primer and finish coating; just had a lot of fun with it! In certain lighting it really pops and I definitely got the comic cel shading I was going for. It ain’t on par with the real legit figure modders but as a first try, gave me a lot of confidence to try again on another. Having two different head sculpts certainly helped. Scarlet Spider and Spider-Man 2099 def gonna get some shades now, just need more acrylics šŸ˜‚ if you got any secret sauces on custom paints, let a newbie know 🫔 blessed Sunday everybody šŸŒž by @lksreads

Daredevil 226: Warriors āš”ļø #singleissuesaturday

Daredevil makes a decision that could affect Matt Murdock’s life forever, and Betsy Beatty is kidnapped with all signs pointing towards the return of Gladiator!

One issue before the start of the Born Again arc, issue 226 sees Matt in a horribly sour mood, and understandably. In the last 20ish issues, 1) his ex fiancée commit suicide, 2)his law firm went under and he’s fighting with his best buddy Foggy, and 3)his situationship is kinda falling for Foggy now. On top of all that, Melvin Potter - who Matt risked his livelihood as an attorney on defending as a client - has returned to the mantle of Gladiator and presumably kidnapped his beloved caseworker, Betsy. Matt’s reeling.

When a Marvel hero’s life is bad, the story is usually good. Matt broods, and broods, and indulgently kicks a lot of ass in this issue while Foggy and Glori get closer. Matt broods some more, and then beats the brakes off of the mentally ill Melvin Potter, relishing the victory. However, in his misguided anger, he misses the whole story; Melvin hasn’t gone rogue, but he’s being forced back into crime with Betsy being held hostage. Now Matt feels even worse. The only saving grace for him is to team up with Melvin as the Gladiator and go break the legs of the real bad guys.

Fantastic single issue. Denny O’Neil sets a fantastically low mood, pulls together some longrunning subplots, pulls a switcheroo and gives us a team-up all in this one issue. AND it sets up Born Again. Banger issue. by @lksreads

ā€œSometimes… I wish I could get my hands on God.ā€

Don’t have generic bad guys yet so Tarantula had to catch smoke for #figurefriday 🤣 as much flak as I give Marvel television/movies, I think Bernthal has captured the essential elements of the Punisher and wears the Skull well, through multiple different titles. Anybody keeping up with current the Punisher run? Want to hear some thoughts on it. šŸ™ Been a long time since I read a Punisher book but seeing him in a few different Marvel reads has me itching.
