ORDINARY days can be the ones you forget to be grateful for.
⠀
Waking up in your own bed. Making coffee in your own kitchen. Hearing a familiar voice from the next room. Getting home and putting your keys in the same spot again.
⠀
None of that comes with a big announcement, so it is easy to let a whole year of those little moments pass while keeping a detailed list of everything that went wrong.
⠀
There can still be bills, stress, unanswered prayers and plans that took longer than expected. Gratitude leaves room for all of that. It does not require pretending the year was easy.
⠀
Sometimes the thing to thank God for is simply another evening at home, another ordinary conversation, another chance to call someone you love.
⠀
A quiet day deserves a little recognition too. by @lmaoitsdane

WINGMAN is a dangerous role when you are the only person in the group willing to walk across the room.
⠀
You were supposed to deliver one sentence, point vaguely toward your friend, and return to your drink. A quick introduction. Maybe a little encouraging nod from a safe distance.
⠀
Then the person you approached starts talking to you, the conversation develops a pulse, and suddenly your friend is watching his own introduction happen without him.
⠀
There is a very small window between “I’m just here to help” and realizing you have become the plot. Every glance back across the room makes the situation less recoverable.
⠀
The next group night out is going to require separate transportation. by @lmaoitsdane

ROMANCE has apparently found another unexpected use for vocabulary learned while playing games.
⠀
Someone offers a small apology about their appearance and the response arrives with the confidence of a person explaining something extremely important to the team. There is no awkward pause, no request for an elaborate explanation, just an astonishingly specific comparison nobody expected to hear on a date.
⠀
The funniest part is how sincerely reassuring the line manages to sound while taking the longest possible route through the wrong subject. Somewhere, a perfectly ordinary compliment was available. It simply lost the selection process to a gaming reference.
⠀
At least the enthusiasm is clear. Nobody is going to accuse that reply of being difficult to interpret. by @lmaoitsdane

MESSAGE is a remarkably small thing to require an entire evening of interpretation.
⠀
The explanations can become incredibly elaborate for something that would take a few seconds to do. A person might be busy, forgetful, nervous, or having an ordinary difficult week. Eventually, though, the question becomes less about imagining every possible reason and more about whether the conversation feels mutual.
⠀
There is a difference between allowing somebody room to have a life and doing all the work of keeping a connection alive. One quiet day is ordinary. Constantly inventing the next opening line while waiting for interest to arrive can get very tiring.
⠀
The phone does not need to light up all afternoon. It would simply be nice if you were not always the person pressing send first. by @lmaoitsdane

BIGGER sounds wonderfully simple until someone has to answer the question of where everything is supposed to go.
⠀
There is always another target, another expansion, and another promise that the next version needs a little more room. The conversation can become so focused on the rising number that the ordinary details underneath it start sounding like inconvenient interruptions.
⠀
It is a bit like looking at an already crowded room and deciding that success must mean adding another cupboard. Where will everyone stand, who gets the window, and can the door still open? Excellent questions, apparently scheduled for a later meeting.
⠀
At some point a successful plan should be able to describe more than how much larger the next number will be. by @lmaoitsdane

APPLAUSE sounds different when the children at the end of the program look out at rows that used to be full.
⠀
Every little group spent time getting ready. Someone practiced their part at home, someone worried about standing in the right place, and somebody finally remembered the words just in time to walk onto the stage.
⠀
It is easy to think of the evening as one short performance you came to see, especially with bedtime waiting and a car park to escape. From the stage, though, the program is still happening after the earlier families have found their coats and started moving toward the door.
⠀
The last song deserves an audience too. Twenty extra minutes can be a small part of an adult evening and a much larger part of a child’s night. by @lmaoitsdane

PREPARED is a comforting word until an ordinary appointment makes the carefully arranged numbers feel much less reassuring.
⠀
People do the sensible things they were told to do, keep their paperwork, and try to leave room for the unexpected. Then an unfamiliar bill arrives and the next evening is spent comparing documents that seem to describe the same visit in several completely different ways.
⠀
There is the appointment, the unfamiliar phone number, the envelope that needs another phone call, and the person trying to sort through all of it while already feeling unwell. The difficult week has acquired an entire folder of additional tasks.
⠀
Getting better should not come with quite so much time spent wondering which envelope is going to arrive next. by @lmaoitsdane

CHEERING can arrive from the most unexpected part of the room.
⠀
You mention something small you finally finished and a person you barely know asks to see it. They remember the detail the next week, tell you the effort shows, and make a perfectly ordinary conversation feel lighter than the announcement you rehearsed for someone much closer.
⠀
It does not take an enormous performance to support a person. Sometimes it is just asking a second question instead of changing the subject, or allowing their good news to occupy a little space without immediately comparing it with your own.
⠀
The surprise is not that a stranger can be kind. It is realizing how long you had been making your happiness smaller before saying it out loud. by @lmaoitsdane

NARRATOR is an interesting position to find suddenly available in a scene described as completely private.
⠀
A person can be halfway through a familiar story before an ordinary question changes the way the scene looks. Not an elaborate argument, just the small practical detail of who was standing where and how the conversation eventually reached the page.
⠀
People bring very different answers to questions about religious writing, tradition, and how a story is understood. The comments will probably contain several of those answers, plus someone who arrived prepared for a much longer debate than the original post required.
⠀
For a moment, though, the mental image is simply an unseen writer trying very hard to remain unnoticed behind the nearest desert rock. by @lmaoitsdane
