Hug the people you love.

In 2008, a professor told us to go to the Southern States Communication Association conference. Get involved! So on a trip to Savannah that happened to coincide with the conference, we went. We had no idea what we were doing. But we met this group, who welcomed us with open arms. So we went back. Again, and again, and again.

We met Barry in this group. Barry is one of the most selfless and amazing human beings I have ever met. He was equally as happy to offer advice and mentorship as he was to crack a dad joke, or refill a mug with his beloved coffee. He loved his family, his friends, and his students. He made everyone’s world a little brighter. Our group lost Barry this past week, far too early. As cliche as it sounds, I firmly believe the world is a less good place without him in it, and I will miss my friend dearly. by @lmrsmith

This past weekend I did my first ever TT race at the @philadelphiacyclingclassic. “How hard could it be?” I thought. “I don’t have to swim before or run after!!” It was…hard. 😂 It was also really fun, and I would definitely ride another! Placing 3rd in my category was also pretty fun. Going to try and add the NJ TT Cup Series to my race calendar next year for sure! #cycling #triathlete #southjerseytriathlete by @lmrsmith

Woof. Some days you have it, and some days you don’t. Today was one of those days. I switched to the aquabike at the last minute, which was totally the right decision. I would have DNF’d the tri. I haven’t had a crappy race in a while so I guess I was due. Ended up 2nd overall for the women, still not sure how. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Oh well. Dr. Lauren Smith presented opening remarks and co-hosted the International Sport and Media Symposium at the University of the Western Cape, in Cape Town, South Africa. Scholars from around the world and representatives from n @unesco took part in the event.

Dr. Smith quoted the former South African president, Nelson Mandela, “(Sport) is more powerful than governments in breaking down racial barriers. It laughs in the face of all types of discrimination.”

She is a full professor in the department of Communication Studies and @rowansportscam program and the director of research for the Center for Sports Communication and Social Impact at Rowan University.

Dr. Smith is also the executive director of the International Association for Communication and Sport. @iacsorg is a worldwide organization of more than 100 scholars focused on the advancement of knowledge in the academic disciplines of communication and sport.
