Join us for a First Friday Gallery Reception on Friday, November 6, from 5–9 PM at LnS Gallery, featuring new works by Jennifer Basile. 🐊

Created during her residency at the Peyton Evans Artist Residency at The Studios of Key West, these works mark a new chapter in Basile’s practice. Bringing together printmaking, redaction, and embroidery, she explores the vulnerability of natural landscapes and the tension between erasure and preservation. Where redaction suggests what is lost, each stitch becomes an intentional gesture of care—a way of holding together what remains.

We look forward to welcoming you this Friday!

Take a closer look at Elisabeth Frieberg’s 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙧, 𝙎𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙚, 𝙍𝙚𝙙 (2024), currently on view in 𝑺𝑪𝑨𝑷𝑬𝑺: 𝑻𝒆𝒓𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑼𝒏𝒔𝒆𝒆𝒏.

A nature-based painter, Frieberg begins with her experience of the natural world, translating the colors, forms, and sensations of particular landscapes into abstract compositions. Rather than depicting a landscape as we might traditionally recognize it, she allows place to emerge through color, movement, rhythm, and atmosphere—becoming something remembered, felt, and imagined.

In 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙧, 𝙎𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙚, 𝙍𝙚𝙙, shimmering glitter catches the light against the rich red ground, while the gold-gilded frame adds another layer of luminosity. Across Frieberg’s recent work, gold, glitter, stars, and space introduce a cosmic dimension to her engagement with nature, suggesting a world of transformation and energy where the earthly and the celestial begin to meet.

The painting is included in the opening section of 𝑺𝑪𝑨𝑷𝑬𝑺, ‘Earth’ where the landscape is considered as something elemental and enduring—existing beyond the human figure and before our interventions upon it.

Frieberg’s work brings this idea of landscape inward and outward at once, inviting us to consider how a place can continue to exist through sensation, memory, imagination, and the larger forces of the natural world.

Arrechea’s presence in this landmark presentation reflects the continued resonance of a practice that examines architecture, identity, memory, and power.

OPENING TOMORROW 🏞️

Join us for the opening of
𝐒𝐂𝐀𝐏𝐄𝐒: 𝑻𝒆𝒓𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑼𝒏𝒔𝒆𝒆𝒏

Landscape has traditionally suggested a view outward, yet it is never simply what lies before us. It is also what we remember, build, alter, leave behind, and carry within ourselves. Inspired in part by John Berger’s writings on art and seeing, 𝐒𝐂𝐀𝐏𝐄𝐒 considers landscape as a field shaped by perception, history, memory, and human presence. Bringing together artists across generations and media, the exhibition moves between natural and built environments, figuration and abstraction, and physical and interior space.

Questions of exile, migration, and displacement further complicate these territories. For several artists, place exists as both lived reality and remembered experience, transformed by absence, longing, and time. Landscape becomes not only a place we inhabit, but one we carry with us. Rather than asking simply, “What is a landscape?” the exhibition considers a more expansive question: 𝑾𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒅𝒐𝒆𝒔 𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒔𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒆𝒆𝒏𝒅?

Rafael Soriano at the National Gallery of Art (@ngadc)

Enjoy these installation images from 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬, a group exhibition exploring how personal experience, history, and ideas of migration, ancestry, and belonging shape our relationships to place.

𝑳𝒂 𝒃ú𝒔𝒒𝒖𝒆𝒅𝒂 (𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒉), 1969, on view in 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬, forms part of the National Gallery of Art’s permanent collection, acquired through the Pepita Milmore Memorial Fund and the Gift of the Rafael Soriano Family Collection. The work reflects an important transition in Soriano’s practice, as he moved away from the more concrete forms of his earlier geometric work and began turning inward, using rounded, almost otherworldly forms to explore ideas of spirituality, the cosmos, and the unseen. The work also speaks to his experience of migration, making its inclusion in 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 particularly fitting.

𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 is on view through August 1, 2027. As stated by the National Gallery of Art, admission is always free.

Take a look at these installation images from 𝗔 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗮: 𝗔𝗿𝘁, 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁, a group show presented by PSAM exploring how magic, spirituality, and esoteric knowledge have shaped queer art and culture in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Featured among the exhibition is 𝙁𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙒𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙝 (1983) by Carlos Alfonzo. At the height of Alfonzo’s career, he had created a lexicon of iconography frequently personified in an abstract expressionist tone that unmistakably belonged to the artist. Many of these symbols oscillates between identity, religion, and mysticism. We are proud to have assisted PSAM in securing the loan, bringing Alfonzo’s voice to this striking exhibition.
