Lynsey Weatherspoon (she/her) is an award-winning commercial, portrait, and editorial photographer and director based between Atlanta and Birmingham. Inspired by her late mother, her first photography teacher, Weatherspoon uses both stills and filmmaking to explore identity, heritage, and humanity with authenticity and care.

Her personal and documentary projects delve into stories of Black Lives Matter activists, the Gullah Geechee people of the Sea Islands, Birmingham’s historic neighborhoods, the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, and the tradition of Mardi Gras Indians. Her ongoing portrait series I See Myself in You centers Black queer, nonbinary, and trans participants, expanding representation for under-seen communities.

Her images have appeared in Vanity Fair, The New York Times, USA Today, NPR, TIME, The Washington Post, and ESPN. Her work has been exhibited at The African American Museum in Philadelphia and Photoville NYC, and she has been honored with distinctions including The Lit List and appointment as a Canon Explorer of Light.

I See Myself in You is an ongoing portrait project and visual dialogue examining how Black identity, belonging, and self-recognition are shaped across generations. Rooted in relationship, conversation, and care, the work uses photography as a tool for reflection that resists distortion and offers affirmation.

This is one of my most ambitious projects yet. I’ve always known that I was queer since I was a child, and that lens (pun intended) gave me a much more compassionate view of the world. As I’ve matured and really examine my work, I realize that so many of those same people have shaped me, and those within our community have been the catalyst of my preservation and survival. So, to honor those, I’m beginning my portrait series, I See Myself in You”. I would love to hear some of your stories, as well as learn how I see the many similarities within our lives. #portraiture #personalwork #blackqueerlivesmatter

August. Lots of eating. Lots of friend time. Lots of flirting. Most of all, it’s the most love I’ve received with open arms. When you surrender to all that’s going on, that’s when you realize how much life you may be missing. Glad to have these moments to hold me, and I know more will soon come. Summer is almost gone, but I never wanna lose this feeling. Back to work. Back to making and reading. And back to living the life I’m so grateful for. by @lnweatherspoon

What’s good?! This is long overdue, but it’s time to reintroduce myself. If you’re new here, I’m Lynsey, and I love photography. I also love my friends and free time, and all the random things I do between my photography practice. I plan on being in this space more sharing things that matter to me, and hopefully to you. Y’all, I’m so excited to share that I’m part of this year’s stellar cohort of filmmakers for The Prototype, established by @southfoodways. I’m making a film about Black family reunions and foodways connected to the tradition. The inspiration of my film is from a chapter in @dramreese’s current book, Gather, and I can’t thank her enough for introducing me to such nuanced ways of what makes a Black gathering all so special.

I’m blessed to have the support of many during this process, and looking forward to sharing the pieces of this journey throughout the next nine months. Looking forward to the guidance of @azairelovejunt and meeting my cohort members soon!
