POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
The 1000TH AND FINAL POST - Lockdown Cinema Club has been a part of my life for 6 years and it’s come to a point where what I mostly put down to changes to Instagram’s algorithm and the platform’s pivot towards video-based content has resulted in my posts’ outreach diminishing astronomically to both my followers and non-followers.
_
I don’t make posts for likes, but it’s fuel to keep going, knowing people are reading, viewing and enjoying what I write about, but with less and less engagement, it feels like an increasingly pointless exercise.
_
I’ve enjoyed the ride, and had great discussions with plenty of amazing film accounts. Thank you to anyone that’s ever shown support, and you can follow my Letterboxd where I’ll continue to write and publish my reviews. Link in bio lol. Peace āœŒļø by @lockdowncinemaclub

PROJECT HAIL MARY (2026) - Uplifting and optimistic, Project Hail Mary is the type of movie people need right now. It’s about saving the world in one breath, but about friendship, togetherness and stepping up for what’s right in a time of need in another.
_
Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller deliver the strong comedy that has seen success in their Jump Street franchise and the Lego Movie particularly, with Ryan Gosling proving a more than capable mouthpiece for their brilliant writing.
_
Not only does Gosling convey the humour the writing asks of him, but he also gives such a well-rounded performance that even the more quieter, tender, emotional moments hit just the same, if not more so.
_
The visuals on show here are also mightily impressive, showcasing the wonder of the space above us but also bringing the world building from Andy Weir’s novel to life with eye-popping colours and textures.
_
It’s safe to say my initial preconceptions were wrong about this movie. The trailers did not do it for me and I was actually very tempted to skip it altogether, but the amazing reviews sparked up an interest and I’m pleased to say it far exceeded the expectations I had and then some, and seems as fitting as any movie to be my final review on this page. 9ļøāƒ£

MY FAVOURITE PHOTOS FROM THE 2026 OSCARS - A relatively standard night at cinema’s biggest event in the calendar, given the vast majority of expected winners took home their respective awards.
_
Little to no upsets was a tad disappointing but there still proved to be worthy winners in most categories.
_
Here are some pictures from the ceremony that caught my eye.

What did you think of the Oscars this year? šŸ’¬šŸ‘‡

āœ… OSCARS PREDICTIONS AND PREFERENCES -
With the 98th Academy Awards this Sunday, I take you through each of my predictions to win in each category, and my preference for the winner too. Most of the categories line up rather nicely between my predictions and preferences, and it’s unfamiliar territory to go into Oscars evening both hoping AND expecting the same outcome.
_
My favourite movie of 2025 was One Battle After Another and I am predicting it to take home 6 awards this weekend. Elsewhere, I predict to take home 4 awards of it’s record-breaking nomination haul. However, with the 2 films almost neck and neck, I certainly don’t write off both Wunmi Mosaku in Best Supporting Actress and a Sinners Best Picture win, particularly with Michael B. Jordan now taking the lead in the polls (undeservedly imo).
_
It’s great to have races in some categories, but most are pretty much wrapped up. Regardless it will still likely prove an engrossing watch for the most part, and here’s to another Oscars evening!
_
(Visual effects prediction and preference is Avatar: Fire and Ash)
_
Who are you predicting in certain categories for the 98th Academy Awards?

THE SECRET AGENT (2025) - Potentially the chillest thriller I’ve ever seen, The Secret Agent takes on a laid-back approach to an occasionally powerful story of political oppression and systemic corruption, yet the glacial pace is often a hindrance.
_
The movie doesn’t earn its almost 3 hour duration, and you seriously begin to feel the runtime as the film progresses. Thankfully the final act is the strongest aspect but I just wish I’d been more invested in what came before.
_
The production design, costumes and depictions of Brazilian culture are brilliant and succeed in immersing the viewer into the world director Kleber Mendonça Filho has crafted, whilst the stellar central performance from Wagner Moura equally feels just as convincing.
_
The characters and even sometimes the story itself do feel deliberately vague and mysterious, but rather than its intentions of keeping my interest, instead I felt it kept me at arms length far more than I’d expected or hoped. 6ļøāƒ£

TOP 10 JIM CARREY PERFORMANCES - With a lot of noise around Carrey’s appearance of late, it seems only fitting to go in the opposite direction and celebrate the great man.
_
Here is my personal ranking of his best 10 performances:
_
10. LIAR LIAR (1997) - Eccentric and manic but also has its touching moments too.

9. A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS (2004) - Plays multiple characters and is always dialled up to a 10.

8. ACE VENTURA: WHEN NATURE CALLS (1995) - More madcap than the first film, but slightly less realised as a character in the process.

7. THE MASK (1994) - The first of THREE 1994 performances, this perhaps his most bonkers role.

6. HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS (2000) - Just as hilarious with each viewing. Gives 110% in this one.

5. ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE (1994) - Put him on the map and he never looked back. So stupidly funny as Ace here.

4. MAN ON THE MOON (1999) - The Andy Kaufman biopic in which he plays the light with the shade brilliantly.

3. DUMB AND DUMBER (1994) - Absolutely iconic and his greatest out and out comedic role for me.

2. THE TRUMAN SHOW (1998) - Shows another string to his bow with so much nuance and authenticity.

1. ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND (2004) - His best performance and one of his most serious roles. Should have an Oscar nomination for this, he really is incredible here.

I SWEAR (2025) - Perhaps a little formulaic and cookie-cutter at times, but an incredibly good version of that. I Swear depicts the condition of Tourette’s with importance, humour and heart, and gives John Davidson the portrayal he so rightfully deserves.
_
Robert Aramayo is outstanding in the central role and is more than worthy of his flowers. I hope to see his BAFTA win carry him to an Oscar nomination next year after the film’s release in the States next month. He is transformative here, playing John with courage and awe-inspiring authenticity.
_
It’s incredibly heartwarming to witness how people are impacted by John taking it upon himself to raise awareness and make a societal difference. A real crowdpleaser and if this is how good Aramayo is this early in his career, i can’t wait to see what he does next. 8ļøāƒ£

ā€œWUTHERING HEIGHTSā€ (2026) - From the discourse online it seems people are almost strangely disappointed that ā€œWuthering Heightsā€ isn’t more smutty or provocative, despite many of those having a huge problem with precisely that in director Emerald Fennell’s previous works.
_
Now having this filmmaker direct these two beautiful Australians in the leading roles does certainly lend itself well to the expectations of excessive sexual encounters, yet the film instead opts for montages, and for the most part, suggestions and metaphor to convey feelings of longing and lust rather than frivolous nudity.
_
And it’s the preferred focus on emotional connection as opposed to a physical one that is perhaps most surprising of all, but the characters are merely there to serve the other’s desires and little else. As when the two characters separate and their actual personalities come to the fore, it turns out they’re both genuinely awful people and it’s incredibly hard to root for them.
_
The story itself feels extremely surface level, not only its style over substance visuals, but in its deeper understanding of human connection outside of the aforementioned longing and lust. There is something here to get your teeth into but I just wish it was more. 6ļøāƒ£

LITTLE AMÉLIE OR THE CHARACTER OF RAIN (2025) - Wholesome, quaint and nice, but not really too much more than that. Little Amelie is beautiful to look at, and contains some really piercing and memorable imagery, lending itself well to both the enchanting and surreal nature of it’s subject matter.
_
Yet I do feel like the whole thing could be fleshed out far more, and it certainly has the room to do so given its runtime of 78 minutes contains 8 minutes of credits. There are peaks and troughs and well written characters, but it feels rather episodic whereas a more flowing narrative may have been a better option for my enjoyment anyway. 6ļøāƒ£

RANKING ALL 53 ALFRED HITCHCOCK MOVIES - Easily one of my favourite directors, and watching 53 movies from one particular filmmaker is perhaps the strongest proof of that fact. This project was far more painstaking than I had realised going into it, particularly given there is a lot of terrible movies in his catalogue too.
_
Despite this, Hitchcock is certainly a master, and the great far outweighs the terrible tenfold. I’ve found hidden gems, and surprisingly laughed and swooned at several pictures too, as well as been outright terrified or thrilled as expected and then some.
_
What do you think of my ranking? Do you have a favourite? Would you move any up or down in this list? Let me know!

KILL BILL: THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR (2011) - I’d rewatched the two Kill Bill movies not too long ago and found that there is a significant quality gap between the movies. The first is action-packed, frenetic and in your face, whilst the second is a lot more loose and dialogue driven. Yet within the context of one movie it works far better.
_
It means the 4-and-a-quarter hour version has the peaks and troughs, and continually has you on tenterhooks because of how invested you are from the first half, rather than starting the second movie and being slightly concerned at the lack of action or continually comparing it to the previous instalment.
_
I completely understand why this was split in two movies as it does make it far more palatable for the regular moviegoer, but Tarantino’s vision for a 4+ hour movie was always right to begin with, and there’s no doubting that when you see The Whole Bloody Affair in all its glory on the big screen. 9ļøāƒ£

SEND HELP (2026) - You either die a hero, or live long enough to see Rachel McAdams play unattractive women. Sam Raimi’s latest is far more Castaway meets Triangle of Sadness meets The Mighty Boosh’s The Nightmare of Milky Joe episode than the Lord of the Flies barbarism-fest I was hoping for, but that’s not to say it doesn’t have it’s gnarly moments or isn’t enjoyable.
_
It isn’t your usual Raimi picture; yes, there are motifs and tropes of his that find their way into Send Help, but it is perhaps a lot more relaxed than I was expecting. That is until the final act, when it goes for broke and makes for edge of your seat viewing. I just wish that there was more of a natural build up to the events which unfold.
_
McAdams is brilliant here and is completely convincing as a meek and bumbling corporate strategist, something which I never thought would be true given her previous roles, but she showcases her range in a huge way here.
_
The more intense thrilling moments really stand out, and I was certainly fully enveloped in the world Raimi created, I just feel it would have worked better with a more consistent tone or a more organic descent into the end mania. 7ļøāƒ£
