THE GREATEST FILMS FROM THE 2000s (a community listing). A new millennium was in town; CGI and technology were sky rocketing. However, what a lot of these selections show is how these movies didn’t need that to tell a great story. Even if films did use CGI, it was to enhance the story world (Zodiac, etc).

Is the 2000s the best decade in film, why/ why not? COMMENT below YOUR CHOICES and stay tuned for our next post looking at the 1960s 💭🍿

A huge, huge thanks to everyone of these accounts joining me in this - couldn’t have done it without them!

Today, I return as part of an incredible collab hosted by Cineunoia to explore films from countries around the world. This was an incredible experience to discover new films from an area I was not as familiar with, and the result was incredible. Each of these films through the years of Germany stand on their own and represent the culture in an impactful way. In terms of filmmaking and storytelling abilities, what film stood out to me that I did not see until now had to be Pandora’s Box, though all these selections are essential pieces of film history. Be sure to check out not only each one, but also the selections by the other incredible accounts who participated. ⁣⁣⁣

Finally, a special thanks to Cineunoia for inviting me, and I am looking forward to more collabs in the future. Be sure to have a happy holiday season and be sure to comment below your favorite German film!⁣⁣⁣

Horror October 2021 Day 23: The Host (2006)

Spoiler-Free Review: I'm glad I got the chance to see another of Bong Joon-Ho's films. This film doesn't quite reach the level of Parasite, but it's still really well done. The Host follows an area that begins getting terrorized by a creature created from hazardous chemicals.

Now the thing about this is that it's easy to compare this film to others like Jaws and even War of the Worlds. However I do believe it effectively sets itself apart from films like that. It's not wholly original, but you can see Bong Joon-Ho's direction shining through this basic premise. It doesn't feel the need to constantly remind you of the terror in this film, but instead takes time in developing and building up all the characters. You have this group of 4 people, each with their own unique perspectives and aspects that we see throughout. It spends quality time showing you both their strengths and flaws, and how they play into the film. But then at the same time it's not afraid to instantly turn up the horror when needed.

There's also just lots of admirable filmmaking moments here. One that stood out to me was when there's a group of people seeing this monster for the first time, and then it quickly jump cuts to a grandfather and granddaughter screaming, but it's just at a game on TV. How people fight and defend against this monster is also exhilarating and fun. The effects that a traumatic event like this has are also done really well.

This film does falter in certain areas though. The way the premise is built with the creation of this monster felt rather lazy and could have been done better. Not to come off the wrong way, but now I've noticed that movies really have a problem with not killing off kids. I say this because the entire story in the film revolves around this. Just think, if this was real life, the monster would just kill them like anyone else probably. I think it especially hurt it here because the movie relied on it so heavily. Along with that, the ending that involves this is abnormal, but also felt weird and off-putting.

Horror October 2021 Day 8: From Dusk Till Dawn

Spoiler-Free Review: I was hoping this might turn out to be one of my favorite films for this year's Horror October, but it unfortunately turned to be a varied mix of good and bad. From Dusk Till Dawn involves two brothers who find themselves in a bad situation while trying to get to Mexico to get some money.

The big knock on this film is that the characters, specifically the main characters of Clooney and Tarantino, aren't super likeable. This wasn't a duo like Jules and Vincent that were bad people but also likeable. These guys are so cruel and irredeemable that it makes it hard to enjoy the story, often told from their perspective. Clooney's character had a little bit more depth and proved to be decent, but Tarantino's is so appalling. He's basically playing an extreme version of himself, and this basically reaffirmed the notion of him being a strange person. He wrote the screenplay to this, so he definitely added in all these bizarre things about his character, like being a pervert and having a foot fetish.

Despite that the story itself was engaging enough for you to wonder what situation these guys would wind up in and how it would play out. There was a fun dynamic to be had between this family that was involved and these 2 criminals together. The ensuing chaos halfway through felt random, but well placed at the same time.

In a film like Planet Terror, going over the top sometimes works really well. But in this there's so many over the top moments that felt out of place here. But also at the same time there's plenty of insane stuff that Rodriguez brings that made this a thrill to watch.

Performances here were fairly mixed. Tarantino and Keitel felt very one note and not too memorable. Juliette Lewis was fun and helped keep things exciting. Clooney definitely gave the best performance here, given his character development and personality that he portrayed well.

From Dusk Till Dawn has a solid story with some fun Rodriguez action, but also missed the mark with some of its characters and going a little too far at times.
