We are honoured to share ‘A Life Across Disciplines: Celebrating Mike Hooves,’ a special gathering taking place during this year’s BUMP Urban Art Conference.

Working closely with Mike’s partner, Bryce, as well as their friends, we aim to create a space where our community can come together to honour and celebrate their life. As a friend of BUMP, Mike was a featured artist, collaborator, and member of our jury. Their generosity, playfulness, curiosity, and belief in the power of art left a lasting mark on our festival and on countless people across Calgary’s creative community.

This gathering brings together some of the artists and friends that knew Mike best, to engage in an open conversation that celebrates their life, art, and passion for shaping communities. The conversation is preceded by a retrospective featuring their art, animation, films, murals, and public projects.

We invite you to gather, share stories, remember, and celebrate an artist whose imagination and generosity will continue to ripple through Calgary for years to come.

I was lucky to start my day close to a couple of Mike’s @yycbump Roadworks murals. Years ago I helped Mike prime these barriers before they rendered these incredible local birds.

Mike’s artistic impact is EVERYWHERE. Their legacy is FOREVER.

I knew Mike held the love and friendship of many, but I never would have anticipated this level of impact. As you may expect, the number of messages and condolences I have received is in the hundreds; it is going to take a long while to answer everyone. I appreciate your patience there. Please know that I am deeply touched by and immensely grateful for everyone’s response. Thank you for everything.

It is with profound and sadness and disbelief that we say goodbye to beloved Calgary visual artist and drag performer, Mike Hooves, whose cancer journey peacefully concluded on Wednesday, July 22, 2026 while surrounded by the care and compassion of their loved ones.

Fiercely and unapologetically non-binary, Mike will be remembered as a vibrant personality and an undeniable talent. Even through hardship and illness, they were a triumphant beacon of queer joy and creativity.

A graduate of @albertauarts , Mike developed a unique artistic voice and successful arts practice. As an illustrator and muralist, Mike left indelible marks throughout Calgary. Following the completion of their first mural in 2020 as part of the @palimpshed project, Mike grew to be a prolific name in public art. Some notable pieces include the @hellovintage_yyc facade in Inglewood, “Lone United” for @calgarypride , “Vivid” for AUArts, as well as numerous Roadworks murals for @yycbump that are displayed throughout the city.

Mike’s art wasn’t limited by medium, and they found personal and artistic fulfilment through their webcomic Enby Breast Cancer (2023), numerous entries in the @quickdrawyyc annual Animation Lockdown series, installations such as Trans Is A Flower (2022) and Rhinestone Cowfolx (2026—on display until October at @werklundcentre ), as well as their short films G.E.M. (2017) and Polymorph (2017), the latter of which screened at BFI Flare in London, and featured cinematography from Mike’s partner of 10 years, and eventual wife, Bryce.

An exceptionally talented drag performer, Mike’s persona Mx Jendr brought joy and charisma to stages throughout the city, and resulted in the creation of @drag.sings alongside @kennaburima , a revue show that showcases the talented voices of Calgary’s incredible drag performers.

In Mike’s spirit of generosity, please consider donating to the organizations that Mike held dearest, including @yacancercanada , @queeringcancer , @wellspringalberta , and @skippingstoneca . A special thank you to the Arthur J.E. Child Cancer Centre and Foothills Hospital for taking care of Mike along their cancer journey.

Was blessed to enjoy a rare outing last night with @mikehooves as we saw @hiromimusic from the front row of the Bella Concert Hall perform a blistering set of jazz fusion with her band, Sonicwonder.

When I talk about the best live performances I’ve seen, I rarely skip my first experience seeing Hiromi perform in Calgary—nearly 17 years ago to the day. Even though I’ve seen some truly noteworthy shows, including some by revered jazz legends, Hiromi plays with a level of speed, precision, and life-affirming exuberance that is beyond comparison.

This latest concert outing with Hiromi’s Sonicwonder as part of the @jazz_yyc summer festival was even more electrifying than I recalled feeling all those years ago. I could gush endlessly about all the players in Sonicwonder but wanna shout out bassist @hadrienferaud who blew me away with his articulation, chord phrasing, and clever expression pedal use.

If it wasn’t enough to see Hiromi perform once again, she graciously signed one of my records she features on—the soundtrack to Blue Giant, a Japanese animated film about playing and performing jazz. It’s a film with a great deal of reverence for the genre, brought to life thanks in part to Hiromi’s amazing and highly varied soundtrack.

Shoutout @kodihutchinson and Jazz YYC for curating an amazing evening I won’t soon forget.
