Although the Calgary Queer Arts Society installations have come to an end, “Rhinestone Cowfolx” by Mike Hooves and Bryce Maruk will remain on view until November 2nd. We invite you to leave a note, memory, or drawing on the back of their artwork, “Trans is a Flower”.

Since 2019, Mike Hooves / Mx Jendr has transformed the galleries, stages and classrooms at Arts Commons/Werklund Centre with their incredible artistry. We’re grateful for their legacy and lasting impact as a leader in the arts. <3

She’ll personally be behind the turntables and this month is keeping the vibe ethereal yet beat-driven with a blend of downtempo, trip-hop, and complementary sounds within hip-hop, jazz, and pop music.

I have not spoke much publicly about that passing of my friend @mikehooves Even now I struggle to put into words the feelings of loss that well up from the pit of my being and pour out of my throat and eyes at odd times.

Though it’s been just over two months, I can still hear perfectly their voice in my ears. They’d sing “Hey buddy” to me on the phone or when they arrived on my doorstep for rehearsals. It’s the exact notes of the Black-capped Chickadee. Appropriately a minor third. I won’t be able to hear that lil call without thinking of them.

The July morning they left, I was listening to the hymn “My Homeland is in the Heavens” by the Doukhobor Kootenay Choir on repeat. Certainly a coincidence to some, but when I received the text I fell to my knees and then sat at the piano for days. I was in the midst of writing my next album of which I had rambled on at length to Mike on my deck for months. They shall be present within every note of this creation.

I share this because though I knew Mike and called them “dear friend” only for a short time, they had such a profound effect on me and my creative process. Almost fifteen years my junior, age means nothing when wisdom is at play and Mike taught me to dedicate myself to my music, to defend it, live through it and share it boldly without shame.

Our co-creation, the drag and cabaret series, Drag Sings Live is just one piece of Mike’s incredible legacy and we will continue on in some way shape or form. Bryce @lockedgroove7 and I are sure of that. Thank you to the beautiful soul @wesnaimphotography for capturing Mike’s and my time on stage together.

So honoured to be able to show these pictures we took together. The beautiful @lockedgroove7 took these photos and edited them thank you so much!! The last picture was from the @shyfriendlol show October 10 2025 and our photo shoot was January 31 2026.

Today is mikes life of celebration and I’m so excited to be performing. I wanted to show these pictures of us to commemorate today. My entire wardrobe was borrowed from mikes gore closet. In fact I will be wearing this corset for the performance today. They gave me the corset after the photoshoot ❤️

When I think about Mike I think about how much fun they were to be around. Mike had a good time and was a goober and hilarious. This photoshoot is so special I’m so glad our chaos was able to be so beautifully and professionally captured. Bryce these turned out fantastic seriously so good.

We are honoured to share ‘A Life Across Disciplines: Celebrating Mike Hooves,’ a special gathering taking place during this year’s BUMP Urban Art Conference.

Working closely with Mike’s partner, Bryce, as well as their friends, we aim to create a space where our community can come together to honour and celebrate their life. As a friend of BUMP, Mike was a featured artist, collaborator, and member of our jury. Their generosity, playfulness, curiosity, and belief in the power of art left a lasting mark on our festival and on countless people across Calgary’s creative community.

This gathering brings together some of the artists and friends that knew Mike best, to engage in an open conversation that celebrates their life, art, and passion for shaping communities. The conversation is preceded by a retrospective featuring their art, animation, films, murals, and public projects.

We invite you to gather, share stories, remember, and celebrate an artist whose imagination and generosity will continue to ripple through Calgary for years to come.

For Mike Hooves. You were my mentor, my uncle, my elder, my dear friend. We really only knew eachother for less than two years but I felt very close nonetheless

We met at Val’s glizzy girls show. We got along right away. I think you saw the weirdo gremlin I was and connected to that. You too were a weird gender gremlin. You made me feel seen in this world.

It’s hard to think of words to say. There are words I wish I had said to you. We texted Tuesday. The day before you went away. I had made plans to see you that weekend. And I never got to. There isn’t a day I wish I didn’t come down to see you sooner but I can’t change the past. I can only look forward.

And going forward I know your guidance love and patience will follow me wherever I go. Thank you for asking me to assist with the hello vintage mural. Thank you for inviting me into your home for thanksgiving. Thank you for planning a silly horror drag musical show that never ended up happening but it meant I got to make you grilled cheese and you got to show me your black sabbath record in Bryce’s amazing sound system.

You are a spirit like no other. You were hilarious, crass, clever. You were calm and self assured. You were kind and loving. You were perfect. You are perfect. I love you uncle so much I miss you so so much.

You will always have a place in my home. Whether your art or your spirit. I’ll always have a candle lit for you. And a tingle ha ha.

Every piece of art I make I hope you see. I loved showing them to you.

Thank you for bubble tea hangouts. Thank you for getting into drag together. Thank you for singing together. Thank you for bathroom photoshoots at tgt. Thank you for glimmer cuddles. Thank you for dinner and hang outs with your beautiful wife Bryce. Thank you for believing in me and listening to me. Thank you for bacon and eggs with barb. Thank you for all your gifts of clothes, art, jewelry, makeup, even my first packer.

Sometimes I reach my hand out and hope you’re holding it. Just know so many people are doing the same. You were a beacon of joy and light and dirty nasty perversion. We’re all reaching out for you and loving you Mike.

As a young child @mikehooves and their sister (Brae)loved being around birds and wildlife. Big sister was always on point trying to show Brae how to wrangle a bird. Birds were also a big part and of Mikes art pieces in and around Calgary . I remember all those hours at Weaselhead park, Eau Clair, Kananaskis, Inglewood and the focus as they studied the birds. Mike on many occasions would have birds come to them and they would reach out and many times capture the bird as it flew around them. Their spirit and Brae’s was tied to birds. This memories of them together just observing them as they watched the birds and the calmness that they had together floods me with so many emotions then and now. It was an annual tradition to go down to Eau Claire and watch as the new babies wandered about in and around them. @metamorpheclipse @yycbump @albertauarts @ssca_calgary
If you have more pictures of Mike”s mural or art pieces involving birds please share. Whenever I see a bird , I talk to them and I know Mikes spirit lives on in beautiful things like birds.

With deep sadness, we say goodbye to beloved Calgary artist, drag performer and friend, Mike Hooves.

Mike was a longtime friend of EMMEDIA and we will forever be grateful to have shared their artistic voice, work beside them, and see the impact they had on the arts and 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.

Most recently, Mike brought their expertise to the PARTICLE+WAVE Media Arts Festival. Throughout the years, Mike's creativity and infectious spirit lit our production rooms and public events. In 2017, Mike created the short film G.E.M., chronicling The Good Life Community Bicycle Shop's Gender Empowerment Mechanyx program, as part of ours and Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival's Youth Queer Media Program. In 2018, they created animations for the Outliers: Calgary's Queer History film, covering 2SLGBTQIA+ activism in Alberta. In 2019, their animations lit the city's Memorial Park Library, as part of Spectral Illuminations IV Projection Mapping Exhibition. Mike's films and animations have gone to screen at festivals across Canada and internationally, capturing the hearts of many.

We will always remember you Mike and this tremendous loss is deeply felt in our community. Our hearts are with Bryce Maruk @lockedgroove7, your family, friends and the many people who had the honour of crossing your path.

In Mike’s spirit of generosity, please consider donating to the organizations that Mike held dearest, including @yacancercanada , @queeringcancer, @wellspringalberta, and @skippingstoneca.
