There is a quote going round from a WGA captain that basically says, we’ve done our part. Time for the employers to do theirs.

Same. Fucking same.

It is beyond time for the agencies who have locked out thousands of actors for over a year be made to look at the destruction they have caused. And face consequences.

We haven’t said much about the town hall. What we learned was absolutely devastating. The ICA is tabling cuts ranging from 70-90% for some categories. How could anyone even consider this a reasonable proposal. Agencies and their clients, media companies - should all be ashamed. Is this what you think is okay for non union actors? Now you want to destroy our contract? What about the next generation? Absolutely devastating.

Do you have an answer?

Expect. Triple. Scale. Across. The. Board.

Shame on everyone who knows how wrong and damaging this lockout has been but have done nothing. Capitalism is a sickness. Union solidarity is what will get us through. by @lockedoutactors

Unbelievable. Actors can’t pay their bills and Cossette running ads without paying us for the work. #firecossette by @lockedoutactors

Who can relate? 👋👋👋
The instinct to work doesn’t disappear on account of a labour dispute. None of us are sitting at home basking in this mess. We want to work. It can take years to develop strong partnerships with casting, creatives and clients. All of that has been ripped away from us.

It has been mighty quiet and we’d like that to change. This has been a brutally hard year with no way to make a living in our field for thousands of actors. And yet hopefulness remains, at least for some, and it is rooted in years of developing our talent, nurturing relationships with our partners in advertising and coming to work hitting the mark, bringing vibrant life to the stories we are trying to tell. Commercial work is a state of mind. Agencies - we want to work and we are right here. Let’s do this.

Yes, we think you’re right OP. They have money to fly people across the country - what Labour dispute! what climate crisis! - but they don’t have money to pay union wages? OK 🙄

It’s true that advertising agencies seem extremely proud of the awards they get. Many of the ads that have cleaned up over the last year feature ACTRA performers, albeit uncredited, and we too are wondering where does the lockout leave agencies?

We know this is touchy - it somehow implies that we think non union actors are less talented. That’s not the case. There are many very talented non union actors - many of whom WANT to be in the union.

But it’s important to acknowledge the credibility and talent of union actors who have performed in thousands of ad campaigns under the National Commercial Agreement. Thousands of whom have been without commercial income for 7 months now.

Upon request of many followers we have turned two stories into a shareable post. We typically don’t do this but the reaction to these rates which would ABSOLUTELY be the result of any OPT OUT scenario, warrant the engagement you’re looking for.

We do need non union actors to stand with us and reject work from locking out engagers. We also recommend rejecting work that is this insulting. In turn we are working on a panel with actra that will provide more information on how you can join the union. And we have other ideas we are bringing to the union to advocate on your behalf.

This lockout affects all working actors.

Pursuing income related to work that has been delivered is not something that should require small claims court. It’s also not something that should generate fear of reprisal. So much of how actors are paid - union or not - runs on an honour system. How is that the best we can do? And how does the dissolution of the NCA benefit performers?

Out industry needs more systems of protection in place, not less.

“Make it your own”. Improvisation is not only a special skill, it’s a craft - an expertise. The ability to lift copy on the fly, make it funny and make it sing is a superpower. Seeing our creative contributions in the final edit or hearing them in a VO happens constantly. We are not compensated for this skill - it’s become an assumption, a leg up. We are writing on the floor and when you use it - you confirm our improvement. Hands up if this has happened to you.
