@lamamaetc presents Loco7's "Lunch with Sonia" as part of the La MaMa Moves! Dance Festival, April 12-16.

"Lunch with Sonia" is a dance puppet theatre piece inspired by Restrepo’s true-life experience with his Aunt Sonia, a woman who decided to end her life with dignity after a long illness. The show uses puppets, live actors, music, video, and physical theatre to deal with the themes of life, love, and loss.

Here is a glimpse into a breathtaking artistry being born right now. This is the vision of Federico Restrepo and Denise Greber, Artistic Directors of @loco7_theatre

A 2+ meter wingspan. A brilliant white heron. And a Colombian-born master of puppetry who sees the dancer inside the puppet.

This isn’t a prop, it’s a character—the first of three “garza” sisters who will take flight in the Loco7’s world premiere of Cause and Effect this November at the La MaMa Puppet Festival.

The heron arrived at our office today, its head peeking around corners and gently gliding through our halls. It came to request an audience with our Artistic Director, Mia Yoo. Because at La MaMa, even the puppets know where to find the heart of the theater.

Cause and Effect isn’t just a show. It’s an innovative dance-puppet experience that blends rod puppets, marionettes, dance, acrobatics, and video to explore our deep, fragile connection to the natural world. It asks us to witness the beauty and fragility of our shared ecosystem.

Stay tuned for the announcement this fall. For now, just watch the magic unfold.

P.S. Yes, the heron confirmed a November visit. 💫

Everything That Follows
Part of the La MaMa Puppet Festival Loco7 celebrates its 40-year anniversary as a resident company of La MaMa.

Through movement, puppetry, and visual art, the work dives into the messy, fragile, and often surreal experience of being alive—our need for connection, our instinct to survive, and our constant struggle to adapt and transform.
Bodies and puppets collide, evolve, and come to life in a dreamlike landscape where vulnerability becomes strength, connection becomes survival, and transformation is inevitable.

A visually striking and emotionally charged exploration of who we are, how we relate to one another, and what it takes to remain connected in a constantly changing world.

Our second panel of the PGM festival will be ‘Talking About Endings’ featuring Federico Restrepo, Denise Greber, Nehprii Amenii and Abigail Mnookin. Panelists consider the challenges of speaking about death, loss, and climate change—especially with younger generations—and reflect on how we hold, process, and release grief both individually and collectively. The discussion opens space for reimagining cultural relationships to endings, inviting more honest, compassionate, and generative ways of acknowledging transition, impermanence, and letting go.

Nehprii Amenii is an award-winning Brooklyn-based director, playwright, production designer, and puppeteer whose work blends visual storytelling, performance, and audience interaction. Federico Restrepo is a Colombian-born director, choreographer, puppet designer, and performer whose work merges dance, puppetry, and visual design. He’s also the founder of Loco7 Dance Puppet Theatre Company and will be accompanied by his long-time Managing Director, Denise Greber who is a director, designer, educator, and arts administrator. Abigail Mnookin has been working as a birth assistant for a home birth midwife as well as a professional birth and postpartum doula. With a background in Environmental Science, she also weaves webs of connection mentoring youth in a weekly outdoor program with the Vermont Wilderness School.

The panel will be held on Saturday, September 19th at 12:30 pm at 118 Elliot. Entry is by donation and all conversations will be live streamed through Howlround.

Loco7 Dance Puppet Theatre Company was founded in 1985 by Colombian born artist, Federico Restrepo. Together with Denise Greber, he is bringing his moving piece, ‘Lunch With Sonia’ to the 2026 Puppets in the Green Mountains festival. Federico creatively fuses elements of dance to puppetry which can be attributed to his original training as a dancer and theatre maker:

1) What is puppetry for you?
"Puppetry, for me, is a way of telling stories that simply work better through puppets than through people. There's something about a puppet that invites audiences to lower their guard—they're often more willing to listen, to empathize, and to absorb ideas in ways they might not with a human actor. That's where the real magic of puppetry lies."

2) How did you come to choose puppetry as your medium of artistic expression?
"It happened completely by accident. I started my career as a dancer and theatre maker and was working on a project with a visual artist who created these humanoid cotton sculptures. One day, I tied one of the sculptures to my body, and suddenly it became a body puppet. That unexpected moment sparked what has now been a 40-year journey of exploring new forms of puppetry and creating dance-puppet theatre."

3) In addition to performing at the festival, what are you most looking forward to about being in Vermont?
"What we're most looking forward to about being in Vermont is connecting with the community—meeting new audiences, fellow puppeteers, and other theatre companies. We're excited to spend time in nature, breathe the clean air, be surrounded by trees, and share in a sense of communion with everyone who takes part in the festival. Those moments of connection, both with people and with the landscape, are what make gatherings like this so special."

‘Lunch with Sonia’ will be performed at Next Stage Arts on September 18th & 19th at 7:30pm. The show is suitable for ages 12 and up. Get tickets on puppetsinthegreenmountains.net by @loco7_theatre

LOCO7 Dance Puppet Theatre Company took the Round Barn by storm this morning! With live music from Prodigal Teardrops, they gave a sampler of the work they've created during their July residency at the Roxbury Arts Group. Be sure to catch their full performance of 'Cause and Effect', at the Roxbury Arts Center at 2pm today. The performance will begin promptly at 2:15pm followed by an open house from 3:15pm to 4pm.

'Cause and Effect' is a dance–puppet performance that brings together rod puppetry, marionettes, dance, acrobatics, live original music, and video to explore the deep connections between humans, animals, and the environment.

Big thanks to @pakatakanfarmersmarket for hosting! taken in Pakatakan Farmers' Market by @loco7_theatre
