Announcing recent grantees and program expansion with additional philanthropic support!

The Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York (A.R.T./New York) is thrilled to announce the recipients of our 5th Cycle of New York City Small Theatres Fund. This grant program, established in 2021 with the generous support of the Howard Gilman Foundation, is expanding with an additional multi-year gift from an anonymous donor. We are proud to announce the 29 recipients for FY27-FY28.

Selected from an initial application pool of nearly 200 applications, the funded theatres will receive two years of flexible, general operating support to support the operations of their theatre companies. This year’s 29 recipients represents a 70% increase in grantees, up from 17 last cycle. We are excited to continue to be able to provide multi-year support to this vibrant and crucial segment of New York City’s cultural ecosystem. Since the program’s inauguration, 107 companies have been awarded support through the Small Theatres Fund.

Let’s hear it for this incredible cohort of the Small Theatre Fund!

I’ll be performing my first puppetry production today at @roxburyartsgroup with @loco7_theatre @lamamaetc July 25 we will have our big final performance here at Roxbury and another performance this fall at La MaMa!

I’m so happy to bring this piece to life, speak out the names of my family members, to honor our immigrant stories and bring wonder to all who see our production.

This year I started my puppetry journey with @wondersparkpuppets and I’m so grateful for all I’ve learned so happy that I have made this a part of my life. Thank you Chad, Federico and Denisse @loco7_theatre for guiding me and supporting me as I explore this new craft.

Here is a glimpse into a breathtaking artistry being born right now. This is the vision of Federico Restrepo and Denise Greber, Artistic Directors of @loco7_theatre

A 2+ meter wingspan. A brilliant white heron. And a Colombian-born master of puppetry who sees the dancer inside the puppet.

This isn’t a prop, it’s a character—the first of three “garza” sisters who will take flight in the Loco7’s world premiere of Cause and Effect this November at the La MaMa Puppet Festival.

The heron arrived at our office today, its head peeking around corners and gently gliding through our halls. It came to request an audience with our Artistic Director, Mia Yoo. Because at La MaMa, even the puppets know where to find the heart of the theater.

Cause and Effect isn’t just a show. It’s an innovative dance-puppet experience that blends rod puppets, marionettes, dance, acrobatics, and video to explore our deep, fragile connection to the natural world. It asks us to witness the beauty and fragility of our shared ecosystem.

Stay tuned for the announcement this fall. For now, just watch the magic unfold.

P.S. Yes, the heron confirmed a November visit. 💫
