An old vine doesn’t survive by accident.

For generations, Lodi’s winegrowers have cared for vines planted long before most of us were born. Through changing seasons, hard years and a wine industry that keeps reinventing itself, they have made the choice to keep these vineyards growing.

Today Lodi is home to more old vine plantings than any other wine region in America. “Old vine” isn’t a regulated term, but 50 years in the ground is the common benchmark. Many of ours are well past a century, and still producing.

Each one is a living connection to our agricultural heritage, and keeping them here is getting harder. Their survival depends on the families who farm them, and on the people who choose to drink the wines they make.

Our latest blog post explores:

There's more to Lodi than Zinfandel 🍇

With more than 130 grape varieties planted across the region, Lodi growers have spent decades working with Mediterranean and Iberian grapes that thrive in our warm days and cool nights.

A few you can taste right here, right now at the Visitor Center:
🍋 Albariño: bright acidity, citrus, stone fruit
🌼 Vermentino: lemon-lime, spring flowers, crisp finish
🍒 Cinsaut: juicy red fruit with clove and black pepper
🌹 Carignane: black cherry, violet, from vines over 100 years old
🍓 Tempranillo: cherry, raspberry, gentle earthiness
🫐 Mourvèdre: dark berry, cassis, earthy depth

Read more about these six varieties at the link in bio, then stop in to taste them side by side. Open daily 10:00AM - 5:00PM.

Some stories take a lifetime to come full circle.

Larry Mettler’s journey has taken him from serving as a tank commander in Vietnam to returning home and building a life in Lodi rooted in family and winegrowing.

Today, Larry continues that work in the vineyards he knows so well, carrying forward a deep connection to place and purpose.

His story reflects something broader about Lodi itself, where generations of growers have shaped a community defined by resilience, service, and a deep connection to the land.

As we reflect this Independence Day, Larry leaves us with a simple but powerful thought: use what you’re given to make your life, your family’s lives, and your country better.

Poppy and Yarrow are back with four baby owlets. 🦉

Our resident barn owl pair returned to nest in the box at the Lodi Wine Visitor Center’s demo vineyard this spring, and this year, they’re raising four chicks.

Barn owls are one of the most effective tools a Lodi grower has against vineyard pests. Gophers, voles, and mice cause serious damage to vines and root systems. Barn owls are natural predators of all three, and a single family can consume between 3,000 and 4,000 rodents per year.

Researchers from Cal Poly Humboldt and UC Davis are now actively monitoring more than 200 nest boxes across Lodi and surrounding areas, tracking how barn owl populations grow as more growers bring them into the farming system.

Last Thursday, they came out to measure, band, and name all four of Poppy and Yarrow’s chicks: Maple, Sequoia, Hemlock, and Sage.

Forty years ago this year, Lodi was officially recognized as an American Viticultural Area, building on generations of farming families who understood the region’s potential long before its designation.

Since 1986, Lodi has grown into one of California’s largest winegrape-growing regions by planted acreage, with more than 82,000 acres of vineyards and over 130 grape varieties under cultivation.

What makes Lodi, Lodi:

💨 A Mediterranean climate influenced by Delta Breezes, which carry marine air from the Pacific through the San Francisco Bay and Delta waterways into the region

🌱 Deep, well-drained soils made up of sand, silt, and gravel carried down from the Sierra Nevada by the Mokelumne and Cosumnes rivers over thousands of years

🍇 Multi-generational farming families who put down roots and stayed

🪾 One of the world's deepest concentrations of old vines, including historic plantings of Zinfandel, Carignane, Alicante Bouschet, and Cinsaut

2026 also marks the 20th anniversary of Lodi's seven sub-appellations, established in 2006. Each one has its own soils, elevations, and distinct character. Over the coming weeks, we'll explore all seven.

Poppy & Yarrow are back! 🦉

Our resident barn owl pair has returned to nest in the demonstration vineyard at the Lodi Wine Visitor Center.

Barn owls play an important role in vineyard ecosystems by helping to manage rodent populations naturally. Just one example of how thoughtful farming and nature thrive together in Lodi wine country.

And this season won’t last long. Nesting activity typically wraps up by late spring/early summer as the young chicks prepare to fledge and leave the nest.

🦉 Want a closer look?

You can now peek inside the nest live via webcam (link in bio), provided by Lauren M. Jackson, M.Sc. candidate at Cal Poly Humboldt.

🍷 Visiting Lodi soon?

Be sure to stop by the Lodi Wine Visitor Center in the coming weeks to explore the vineyard while Poppy, Yarrow, and their chicks are still at home.

Ever noticed a small green seal on the back of a Lodi wine bottle that reads “Certified Green?”

That seal means the wine was made from grapes grown under LODI RULES, America’s original third-party certified sustainable winegrowing program.

Ahead of its time, LODI RULES grew out of a grassroots grower-led effort that began in 1992 and became a formal certification in 2005, built on over 150 farming standards covering ecosystem, water, soil, pest, and business management, plus human resources.

More than 25 Lodi tasting rooms pour wines made from LODI RULES certified grapes, spanning over 50 grape varieties. The Lodi Wine Visitor Center @lodiwinebar carries a curated selection too.

This Earth Day, learn more about how to sip sustainably and where to find wines bearing the LODI RULES seal locally. Link in bio.
