Concluding the non-Rolex series with this ultra fine and purpose-built Fifty Fathoms No Radiations, featuring a rare Technisub-signed dial.

“Technisub, founded in 1962 by Luigi Ferraro, one of the pioneers of diving, has developed the most sophisticated technological expertise in rubber and plastic material applied to underwater equipment. This know-how has been combined with innovative design and a distinctive creativity that has produced a range of equipment unanimously considered among the most advanced in the field. Technisub is part of Aqua-Lung International, the largest diving equipment group in the world in terms of turnover.” - divingheritage.com.

Interestingly, Blancpain made both Technisub and Aqua-Lung-stamped Fifty Fathoms No Radiations. Aqua-Lung was founded in 1948 by world famous diver Jacques Cousteau, who also helped develop the first open-circuit, self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (hence the name scuba).

The model name Fifty Fathoms derives from the standard diving unit of length equalling to 6 feet (1.8288 meters), with fifty fathoms equalling 300ft (91.44m).

Continuing the non-Rolex series with this distinct and unique Heuer Chronosplit created for Ferrari and ordered directly by the man himself, Enzo Ferrari.

This piece is part of a limited run of 200 examples produced from 1977 to 1978 that were sold exclusively through Ferrari dealers worldwide. They were created during the height of the digital-quartz movement (no pun intended) that was intended to usher out the mechanical age. The dual-screen LCD/LED display not only shocked with its futuristic design, but allowed for multi-functionality and precise timekeeping.

This piece sold through @monacolegendgroup Exclusive Timepieces auctions on 31 October 2020 for €3,380 ($3,667 USD). Picture credits to @monacolegendgroup. by @logodial

Kicking off the non-Rolex series with this fascinating piece that truly captures the spirit of the topic… an Omega Constellation featuring a Saputo-stamped dial, circa 2004. Yes, that Saputo.

Saputo is a Montréal-based dairy company producing cheese, milk, and cream-based products. It was founded in 1954 after master cheesemaker Giuseppe Saputo and his family immigrated from Sicily to Canada. Soon after the move, his son Lino convinced him to create his own cheesemaking company with a $500 ($5,600 CAD/$4,120 USD today) start-up fund. Today, through a number of mergers and acquisitions, the company has expanded its products and operations into 60 countries worldwide, and amassed billions of dollars in assets and revenues.

These pieces are specially ordered and given to long-standing employees as gifts for a notable employment anniversary or as a retirement parting gift, often including the employee’s name and celebratory occasion on a caseback engraving.

This piece is currently available through @thillier_heritage for $1,450 USD. Picture credits to @thillier_heritage. by @logodial

Concluding the series with this rare and beautifully aged Sea-Dweller #1665 “Great White”, featuring a Kuwaiti Coat of Arms-stamped dial, circa 1978.

Not much is known about the history or provenance behind this example, as this dial/model configuration has yet to see another just like it. However, much like other government-issued, coat-of-arms-stamped pieces, it’s reasonably assumed that this piece was factory ordered in this configuration by a high-ranking government official– possibly for themselves, or likely as a gift to another government official or foreign dignitary.

This piece was sold through Christie’s Rare Watches auction on 12 November 2018 for CHF 56,250 ($63,867 USD).

Continuing the series with what can only be referred to as a true museum piece– the one and only platinum Yacht-Master 16620PT ‘Dix Millionieme Chronometre’, circa 1992.

This platinum prototype was specially ordered by none other than Rolex CEO Patrick Heiniger as a celebration of Rolex producing its 10 millionth chronometer.

Patrick and his father André are central figures in creating the competitive powerhouse Rolex stands as today. It is due to their ingenious business strategies that Rolex has achieved its invaluable industry placement as a vertically-integrated brand, responsible first-hand for its own materials and production processes. From 1960 to 2008, it was the colossal undertaking of this father-son duo to uphold and accelerate the legacy of Rolex and vision of Wilsdorf during pivotal stages of the company’s development.

There’s truly no better way to commemorate a tremendous achievement than a prototype trophy piece.

This magnificent one-off example sold through @monacolegendgroup’s Exclusive Timepieces auction from 22-23 April 2023 for an astounding €2,316,800 ($2,496,630 USD).

The last several months since posting last have been quite busy to say the least, but it’s with great pleasure that I can resume regular posting and get right back into it from where we left off.

Frankly, there’s no better way to ‘dive’ back in than with this incredibly rare and fascinating Submariner #16610 “Motorista Navale”, circa 2002– likely produced and issued as a 50th anniversary celebration of the Italian State Police Nautical Division.

If you’re a regular in the double-signed/logo dial space, you’re likely familiar with the poster child of the Italian State Police-issued examples: the Sea-Dweller #16600 “Sommozzatori Polipetto”– known for its distinctive octopus-stamped dial and astronomical market prices in recent years. While quite a few of the 78 Sommozzatori examples are known to have traded hands, only 1 or 2 Motorista Navale examples have been publicly documented, making further information on these pieces scarce.

This example, with all original accessories, sold through @sothebyswatches Important Watches auction on 10 June 2023. If these models follow the same sale pattern as its Sommozzatori sibling, it sold for much higher than its $30-50k USD estimate.

Concluding the series with another one of @johnson167’s remarkable finds– a “Levi’s Youthwear” Datejust #16030.

Just like the previous Honda-signed Day-Date, we’ve seen this iconic logo before on another 16030 Datejust featured on this page a few more series ago.

It is likely that this example was used as a promotional tool of some kind during the 80’s, although its exact story and origins remain ambiguous. Either way, definitely a very cool marketing product, and the perfect type of anorak-y piece for this page.

Another one-of-a-kind piece that has another one like it yet to surface to the public eye, quite possibly making this entire series full of captivating museum pieces.

Next up in the series is this incredible Explorer #5500 Super Precision, circa 1962, with a dial stamped by Joyeria Riviera– a Cuban-founded Puerto Rican boutique long considered one of the most notable in the Caribbean.

Reference 5500 is particularly unique in the line of Explorers as it is a hybrid of two models, featuring the petite 34mm case from the Air King 5500 mated to the distinct 3-6-9 dial commonly seen on Explorers.

The reference came in two forms– ‘Precision’ with a Caliber 1520 and ‘Super Precision’ with a Caliber 1530, a chronometer-certified movement as featured on this example. Furthermore, close examination reveals an ‘exclamation mark’ at 6 o’clock– likely a sign of Rolex’s use of lower radium content after discovering the dangers of the radioactive material, prior to transitioning to tritium.

Yet another ultra fine, highly collectible example with another one like it yet to be seen.

This piece sold through @phillipswatches’ Geneva Watch Auction: FIVE in May of 2017 for CHF32,500 ($35,695 USD). Picture credits to @phillipswatches. by @logodial

Beginning the series with this incredibly fascinating and one-of-a-kind 18k yellow gold Day-Date #18038 featuring a Honda-signed dial.

So far, there have been three other examples of Honda-signed Rolexes, one of which was a Date 15000 commissioned for the winner of the 1985 Honda Bowl featured a few series back. This particular example, however, is the only known Day-Date with the iconic double signed Honda dial, which was likely a special order by a company executive.

Of all the Rolex models to feature any sort of double signature or logo-stamped dial, the Day-Date is definitely one of the rarest to find. This example is truly as good as it gets, being a flagship model with an instantly recognizable double signature, and in new old stock to boot. A true treasure item that is likely to be come across only once; for that, it is unequivocally filed in the ‘museum piece’ bracket.

Concluding the Tiffany Daytona series with this magnificent #16520 Zenith with an iconic and hardly-seen panda Tiffany & Co. dial, circa 1991.

Since the partnership between Rolex and Tiffany & Co. lasted from the mid-50’s until around the mid-90’s, only a handful of 16520s were able to be ordered with the beloved Tiffany stamp, and even fewer have reached public sale. This particular example is in exceptional condition with a highly desirable configuration and is sure to be a highlight of any collection.

This piece sold through @loupethis on 18 November 2022 for $71,255 USD (+10% buyer’s fee). Picture credits to @loupethis. by @logodial

Continuing the Tiffany Daytona series with this possibly piece-unique 14k yellow gold #6241 ‘John Player Special’ Tiffany & Co., circa 1969.

The Daytona ‘John Player Special’ got its name in the same way almost all nicknamed Rolexes get theirs– collectors and scholars one day saw a distinct resemblance between the colors used for John Player Special cigarette packaging, and later on with JPS-sponsored Lotus racing liveries, and collectively adopted the name ‘John Player Special’ to denote this specific black and gold reference– a perfect fit for a racing watch.

As if a JPS isn’t ‘special’ enough, the Tiffany stamp brings this piece to a whole new echelon of collectibility, as is proven by its hammer price of CHF740,000 ($844,130 USD). This piece sold through @phillipswatches’ Geneva Watch Auction: FIVE on the 14th of May 2017, and was featured in Pucci Papaleo’s famous Ultimate Rolex Daytona book.

Introducing the Daytona series with this wonderfully preserved #6265 ‘Big Red’ featuring the mighty Tiffany & Co. dial, circa 1979.

This particular Daytona series will be centrally focused on the collector-coveted Tiffany & Co.-stamped examples which put double signed pieces into the mainstream eye. These rare examples command considerable premiums both at auction and private sale, however scholarship has come to reveal that there is a significant number of Tiffany-stamped pieces in circulation that have been doctored to deceive unsuspecting buyers into paying considerably more for what they thought was an authentically signed collector’s item. It is crucial that prospective buyers do their due diligence to ensure the authenticity of these pieces as auction houses and even dealers and private sellers can oftentimes be hasty to authenticate the watch itself, but not look into the provenance of its double signature.

With that being said, when they are able to be authenticated, they hit big and are sure to receive no shortage of attention. Time and time again Tiffany-stamped Rolexes and Pateks reach soaring sale prices, smashing auction house estimates and sometimes record model prices.

This particular 6265 sold through @sothebyswatches on the 9th of December (my birthday) with an estimate of 50-100k USD– it would be no surprise to hear that it sold for the upper end of its estimate, likely even more depending on how eager bidders were feeling that day. Thankfully collectors could bid on this piece with confidence as this example was verified through Tiffany to have sold through their New York boutique on the 6th of November, 1982.
