Concluding the series with this beautiful Day-Date #18238 with a rare and milky Cacholong dial– the perfect yellow gold counterpart to the rose mother of pearl Daytona featured earlier in the series.

Cacholong is a type of opal also referred to as Malmuck agate, and is found in Spain, Czech Republic, Tanzania, Mongolia, and Uzbekistan. This dial has been seen on very few examples, and is known to be one of the rarest stone dials out there. As if that’s not enough to raise considerable collector interest, this example is in NOS condition and has never been worn since its sale in 1993. Is that impressive or disappointing? Hard to say, maybe both!

Continuing the series with this visually intriguing and fascinating yellow gold, lapis lazuli, and nephrite Chopard from the 70s.

Though it’s technically not a ‘logo dial’, this piece so elegantly incorporates two separate metals and natural stones in such a stylishly unique, seamless, and agreeable manner that it deserves to be celebrated. It may be an unusual feature for the page, but it certainly doesn’t feel out of place.

This piece is currently for sale through @the_keystone for $19,500 USD. Picture credits to @the_keystone. by @stonedial

Beginning the series with this stunning white gold Daytona #116519 paired with a very light rose mother of pearl dial, circa 2002.

This configuration makes for a particularly attractive example, with the black leather strap doing wonders in accentuating the white gold and MOP dial. Arabic markers on the Daytona are underrated…

Continuing the series with this yellow gold Audemars Piguet Caliber 2080 #14600BA, featuring a stunning opal dial.

While it may not officially be ‘piece unique’, owner @jdwrist says another one like it has yet to come into the public eye. Either way, it’s a hypnotic and wonderfully proportioned piece– notice how each picture highlights a different color scheme depending on how the light hits it. Marvelous.

Beginning the series with this incredible and potentially one-of-a-kind 18k yellow gold Daytona #16528 featuring a diamond-set lapis lazuli dial, circa 1996.

The history behind this piece is surrounded in a bit of mystery– according to the Sotheby’s lot (later withdrawn from sale for unknown reasons), this piece was fresh-to-market and consigned by an important private collector in October of 2020 for Sotheby’s Important Watches auctions.

What makes this piece particularly intriguing is that prior to this example, no Daytona in regular production had a yellow gold case and hard stone dial configuration, nor did any hardstone-dialed Daytona ever come with anything other than a leather strap. Its yellow gold case and bracelet, paired with its lapis dial, made this a never-before-seen Daytona.

Curiously, this example was “not published in literature”, and it was the auction house’s best guess that since it was produced in 1996, this piece was used as a test configuration ahead of the release of the sodalite and grossular-dialed Daytonas later that same year. Interesting theory, not impossible. It was, however, offered with its original Rolex Garantie.

Curious background for a curious piece- legitimate one-off/prototype or another auction house frankenstein?

Concluding the series the very first Datejust feature on the page– this astonishing and potentially piece-unique white gold Datejust #1601 with a Red Jasper dial, circa 1967.

A true museum piece with a stunning contrast between metal and dial color. It’s unusual as it is to find a Datejust in precious metal with a presidential bracelet, but this combo is as rare as it gets.

This piece sold through @monacolegendgroup’s Exclusive Timepieces auction on 17 April 2021 for €174,850 ($187,754 USD).

Continuing the series with this rare white gold Audemars Piguet Edward Piguet Tourbillon 2636BC with a beautifully colored pink mother of pearl dial.

A unique approach to class and atypical for what we usually see from AP, but very well executed nonetheless.

This piece is available for sale via @europeanwatchco for $81,400 USD. Picture credits to @europeanwatchco. by @stonedial

Beginning the series with this beautiful white gold Daytona #116519 with a vivid and striking yellow mother of pearl dial and its complimenting yellow lizard strap, circa early 2000’s.

This piece was part of Rolex’s ‘Beach’ series, featuring a series of four colorful, naturally-dialed Daytonas with matching colored straps. The three other models had green chrysoprase, blue turquoise, and pink mother of pearl dials, all with color-matching straps. The pink and green examples can be found among the first Daytona features on this page.

Concluding the series with this incredibly well preserved Day-Date #18239 featuring an utmost attractive Mahogany wood dial, circa 1990.

While it’s rare to see any wood-dialed Day-Date, it’s a special sight to see one in white gold with a deep brown Mahogany dial and no-lume hands; the vast majority of wood-dialed Day-Dates are lume-handed yellow gold examples with Birch or Mahogany with lighter finish dials. This particular piece’s no-lume hands, exquisite natural patterning, and contrast with dark dial and light metal makes for a very sleek, rare, and attractive sight.

This watch sold for HK$327,600 ($41,736 USD) during @phillipswatches’ Hong Kong Watch Auction: XI on 29 November 2020.

The ultimate MOP dial... a gorgeous and piece unique platinum Daytona Zenith #16516 “The Platinum” featuring a breathtaking black Tahitian Mother of Pearl dial, circa 1999.

This piece was part of a set of 5 piece-unique platinum Zenith Daytonas commissioned by then-Rolex CEO Patrick Heiniger, 4 of which he gifted to business partners. Only 3 of these pieces have been publicly offered for sale, the other 2 examples can be seen in the most recent Daytona features.

According to @sjxwatches, “Mr Heiniger presented the watch to Francesca Gobbi and Romain Gourdain when the pair got married in October 1999, explaining the engraving on the case back. The Rolex connection comes from Ms. Gobbi, whose family owns Gobbi 1842, a watch retailer in Milan that is one of the oldest in Italy.” - @sjxwatches.

This one-of-a-kind piece sold during Sotheby’s Important Watches auctions in 2018 for a handsome $871,348 USD, setting a record for any Zenith Daytona at the time.
