UPDATE on Julia’s cats. We are still looking for a foster or adopter for Baby Sir and Sushumna (4 year old brother and sister). While we have a lovely offer for each cat individually, we would really like to find someone(s) who can welcome them both. Julia had a 5 cat household for over 4 years and the thought of Baby Sir and Sushumna not having each other is giving us pause.

My, our, dear dear magical friend Julia Röhl passed away a few weeks ago. It has been a struggle to process this tremendous loss. While I knew she was ill, I didn’t know how much—we lost her after a very short stay in hospice. It is heartbreaking to lose someone so special—as @rachelselekman said, “almost indescribably so.”   She was the glue to so many communities, who are now bonding together over the grief we all share. It’s truly amazing to find in this aftermath the deep ocean of loved ones she had cultivated across the globe. @gianroop described her as an “enlightened bodhisattva” and I wholeheartedly agree. I have been going through my days with her voice in my head and asking myself at every juncture “What would Julia do, or say?” She had a tendency to call her friends “Sweet”, and I’ll never stop playing her “Sweet Lauren” in my mind when I think of her.

Julia was a true activist, with endless energy for rallies and protests to fight for the rights of the disempowered. Having recently attained her citizenship, she cared deeply about fighting for a just and equitable America. This first photo was taken by @verenakurz right after they painted a large BLM on their roof.  I’ve never known anyone so sure of herself. She spoke slowly and never rushed, always with kindness, compassion, and warmth. She could talk to anyone, and bridge gaps between communities that struggle to hear each other. But she had no fear—she meant what she said and she did not stutter.   Julia’s fierce independence would make me laugh – she complained when I would drive her all the way to her door (“wasting your time!) instead of simply dropping her at the corner. But taking her was my way of showing her I loved her… (Continued below in comments) by @lomagna

This Tuesday we’re going downtown to tell the government to make us a family in their eyes.
