Moemoea: A Model for Dreaming by Lonnie Hutchinson @lon_donna

Featuring köwhaiwhai patterns, this work invites viewers to reflect on the ancestral stories embedded within its shifting shadows. Hutchinson’s series of 10 panels echo the corrugated-iron roofs of settler-style homes across Aotearoa, while the pattern introduces a counter rhythm.

On display as part of the @aotearoaartfair Sculpture Trail, presented by @viaductharbour

Located at 117A Customs Street West (next to Bivacco)
April 16 - May 14

Lonnie Hutchinson’s ‘Awhi’ is on display adjunct to our current exhibition, Veronica Herber’s ‘Awareness, the key to it all.’ Dr Pounamu Jade Aikman writes in the review ‘Lonnie Hutchinson, From Me To You’ that ‘Awhi (2022) extends Hutchinson’s critique of colonialism from gender to the dispossession of Māori land. Composed of powder-coated aluminium with a buttercup-yellow finish, Awhi takes the shape of a concertinaed quilted blanket with a fringed edge.’

Lonnie recently received the Senior Pacific Artist Award at Creative New Zealand’s 2023 Arts Pasifika Awards. This highly regarded award recognises an artist’s commitment to their community and practice.
